I am scratching my head in vain trying to build a lengthy tunnel under existing mountain terrain.I have the tunnel entrance in place, the hole in the terrain and needed transfers in place.I connect up the first piece of tunnel track ok. Hit the '/' to allow me to pass through the terrain and reach the other end of the tunnel track. BUT I CAN'T ADD ANY MORE PIECES. What's the trick!!!Martyn T. Griffin

RE: Building Tunnels

::chuckle::I have found two ways to create tunnels--one for when I do not use Dem-ex and the other for when I do.For non-Dem-ex, I have found that you have to place the new piece on the ground and then drag it down. For Dem-ex, I use the "y" key carving a canyon. I then re-Dem-ex the tile(s) and continue on with life. Lawrence

I find it hard to believe that there is not a more 'sane' way to do this. Re-doing Demex on the 3 tiles affected will also render the several days work of 'carving' a path through the rocky valleys all wasted!! Much of this was altered by hand, not just a simple 'Y'.Not to mention it will remove all of the individually selected and rotated tertex patches!!Martyn T. Griffin

RE: Building Tunnels

I had the same problem!I overcame mine by lowering the terrain where the track piece was to be used using the "Y" key and laying all the track. Then I re-imported the DEM data and hey-presto my tracks now underground!Whilst this was suitable for the New York Subway, I'm not sure how it'll work with re-creating a mountain!Paul

Building Tunnels – image 2

Martyn, there is a relatively easy way to do it! First of all, go into wireframe mode "w". Turn camera collision off "/". Position the camera so you are directly over the end of the first track, looking down. Now hit F5 and and position the crosshair and click. If the added section doesn't join, delete it and try again. Sometimes it helps to position the junction point near the bottom edge of the screen. Then move your mouse pointer so it is just below the junction point and move up to the right spot. With a few tries you can get pretty good at estimating. This is especially useful if you can't see the crosshair pointer.Cal Rasmussen

RE: Building Tunnels

I have found when making a tunnel, I hit the Y key, when I get to the end of the tunnel sections I save it without saving any terrain changes... just the world placement, I have tried this several times and it seems to work for me. Just a thought seeing as we must save, save, save.

RE: Building Tunnels

OK, I tried a variation on the above themes, and it actually works, but without saving until you pop out the other side!1-Create the opening and tunnel entrance etc.
2-Connect the very first tunnel track into the tunnel (and do a '/')
3-select the track piece
4-while selected, set its elevation as needed.
5-use camera to follow the selected track to its end.
6-press 'Y'
7-add on the next piece of tunnel track.
8-press ` (appostrophe) to reset the terrain back
9-goback to step 4Just laid 2.5 miles without any issue (except have to do it again cause elevation settings where wrong )Thanks,

RE: Building Tunnels

I dunno why you guys always gotta make things so complicated.Building Tunnels – image 3
Step 1, lay out tunnel sections, hitting Y as you go to make it easy to connect each piece. Totally destroy mountain.Building Tunnels – image 4
Step 2, hold down the CTRL key, hit the ~ key, global undo all terrain changes since last save. Works good for bridges too.

RE: Building Tunnels

Hee-hee, yeah, if you ain't got enough RAM the big bang could turn into a wet firecracker on ya. I was doing that back when I had 384 megs tho, so depending on how many times you hit the Y key it should work just fine as long as you're over 256.

RE: Building Tunnels

I agree with CalR, and have been able to make my (under mile long) tunnels by keeping the camera looking straight down in wireframe mode. Another alternative would be to place each new piece near the entrance so it's at the same elevation, and then hold the Control key while repositioning it to maintain the elevation. It should snap onto the end once it gets close.Much more prototypical a construction method than daylighting and backfilling (What's that? You say you're not modeling the construction process as well?

RE: Building Tunnels

Well here is my two bits worth. I just created a 5800' tunnel on the Kingsport Sub., and also a 2900' one.I find the problem of getting the heading angle of the track in the tunnel, assuming it is a tangent tunnel to be the biggest problem. Someone suggested this to me, and it works.Part 1: (someone else) Place a long piece of ordinary track at the correct elevation and heading angle of the tunnel. Naturally it sticks back under the ground. I use a 500M piece of tangent. Now at the entering end, place a shorter piece of tangent track, say 100M, and delete the 500M piece. Now build your tunnel piece by piece (but it would have been nice to have 250M & 500M pieces of tunnel). To get them to join, they must be close together, and at the same elevation so.Part 2: Note the elevation of the first piece, copy it down to something if senility is a problem. Lay the next piece, after your hit the "/" key. This piece may be at any elevation, so while it is selected, select the MOVE button. Select the DOWN ARROW, and hold it down, while depressing the SHIFT key. This will rapidly move the piece downward. When you are within a few meters of the correct level, releate the DOWN Arrow, and depress the CONTROL key, while moving the piece with the cursor. This restrains it from moving up or down. Works for me, and I don't have to mess up fresh real estate.J. H. Sullivan, P.E. (retired)

RE: Building Tunnels

Jonatan, you can't make the tunnel itself transparent. The Y key levels the ground to the bottom of the track section, that's all it does. To make the terrain temporarily transparent in the route editor use the W key. If you're talking about how to make the tunnel entrances transparent, select the F9 terrain height tool, put the circle on the ground where you want the "hole" in the terrain, and hit the V key. That usually leaves a hole that's too big, some people use terrain transfers to fill in around the tunnel entrances, I just stack multiple tunnel entrances around the hole.
