How many tiles should I leave on each side of the route if I plan to use Demex distant mountain terrain? In the “Step-by-Step Guide”, the next to last step when adding or deleting tiles in RGE is to select a start point. Is it always necessary to do this, or only when the tile changes remove the old or add a new start point location? If my route has some 30m DEMs, is there any advantage to download a DEM that has both 10m and 30m as a 10m?Thanks, Bill
IIRC, distant mountain tiles don't have to be contiguous. I'm not using any in my route, because it's all low rolling terrrain so I'm only selecting tiles that the track is actually on, and an occasional neighbor where the track is close to the tile edge.Always selecting a start tile is easier than forgetting to select one when you need to, getting the white void, having to bail out of RE and go back to RGE to select one. So, no you don't need to if you haven't deleted the existing start tile, but what the heck, it can't hurt.If you terraform your route in stages, having the 10 meter dem will give you more accurate terrain so long as it isn't merged with any thirty meter dems. On my route I'm terraforming and building tile-by-tile to avoid taking up space with large numbers of unnecessary tiles. When it's time to add a tile I deselect all tiles in demex, then select just the tile I'm terraforming with just the dem needed for that tile. The most dems I'll ever need to merge is four, where a tile is right at the corner where the dems meet.HTH Lloyd
The normal terrain should extend about 2km (1 full tile) beyond the track, 2 is certainly great plenty. The DM terrain is a whole 'nother set of tiles and a second quad tree.Every route always needs a valid start point within the area of the terrain. If you don't touch the tile with the start point, you don't need to create another one. As you build though you may want to regularily move your start point.10m DEM files, while approximately 9 times the size of 30m DEM files always produce better terrain.David Beach.Palouse & LewistonRoute Building 1% Completed Route Mapping 10% Completed
