RE: Cajon Pass help!! Please read and help me !!!!!!!!!

My goodness!!! Sounds to me you want to drive the Indy 500 before your feet can touch the pedals.Making a detailed route is extremely complex if you decide to go all out.Knowing RE is a good beginning. Getting the necessary DEM files and incorporating into the RGE. Probably going to need topographical maps and knowing how to read them and distinguish terrain and other type objects. And there's more...much more. But I'll cut to the chase. Do a small route...really small. Maybe 30-70 miles long in an area you are close to where you have the means to get the data readily available. Granted, Cajon Pass is available as an add-on and there is nothing wrong in making one for yourself and it is possible for others to make it. But start "small" and work your way up.Using search engines like Google.com is a great tool in information. Having a railroad buddy (who works for the railroad) wouldn't hurt either. If you haven't, Michael Vone's has a route editor manual (a new one comes out soon) that you should get. www.trainsimulatorworld.com Your questions cover a broad spectrum. Of course there are many here who could help, but go one step at a time. It makes it easier for us to help, if you follow a "direct route" instead of trying to absorb everything at once. Because if you try to do that (absorb everything at once) you'll just end up with hemrroids, ulcers and gray hair...not necessarily in that order. Once you have one area licked, go on to the next one and then the next one and so on. There are many here who have made some very nice freeware routes and each one was built with a "plan" involved...even the fictional ones. Most of the route builders I know alot of planning and data gathering before track 1 is laid. Another suggestion is go to 3DTS and ask there, maybe they can help you get started (I am not the "Cajon" guy). Wouldn't hurt. Good Luck and start small.....to get some practice in.Kip

RE: Cajon Pass help!! Please read and help me !!!!!!!!!

Whew bigrig!Them's some mighty big questions there!I'm just BARELY started on learning RE (Route Editor) and that stuff is waaaay down the line for me.Unless you just GOTTA' build it yourself... it really would be money and time well spent to purchase Cajon Pass.In my limited experience with RE, I can see right now that it will be a loooong time before I could ever hope to produce a route with the visual quality of Cajon as well as the operational complexity. However, if you feel compelled to build and not buy, then start with a question about ONE ITEM, learn that, then go to the next. That is, with the list of questions you've asked, there's not much way one poster will answer all of them. Take the first aspect of RE you want to learn, and ask a question about that. After the Wise One's answer, learn the technique, then go to the next question. Me thinks you'll overwhelm your aides by asking that much info in one wad.Good luck!Andre "Coonskin" Ming

RE: Cajon Pass help!! Please read and help me !!!!!!!!!

Boy do I agree with the other guys who answered! I'm working on about 30 miles of mostly single track called the Old Colony & Newport. It's a big job and you need to get your resources together before you start. You're asking the right questions, but you're the one who needs to answer them for yourself, so you really know the route you're modeling. Get the USGS quad maps (the hard copy ones) and study them. Find a web site that has historical maps of the region, if you're not doing the current situation (here in New England I've got U. Maine; there must be something like that for California). If you're anywhere near the route, go look for yourself and take pictures (careful, people are really sensitive about pictures after 9/11). Take it one step at a time...it sounds like you're jumping in head first with this posting. Charlie

Do yourself the fovourSave the 38 bucks and buy itBy doing so you will avoid the following1. Waiting 2 years to complete your route2. Purchasing a new keyboard / monitor from hitting it when the RE crashes.......and crashes......and crashes3. You will get many good nights rest4. You get LOTS of add-on equipment that is definitly worth having5. You will probably save about 700 bucks in headache medication !!6. You will actually get to run trains rather than have the RE run you7. The rest of your family wont wonder why your screaming at a computer............trust me I've done it !!!!!8. Last but not least, they may be the best payware route creators out there ( Im canadian so I have to say Maple Leaf Tracks )BUTIt's a tough callAnyways , save yourself the headaches........save purchase the routeLaterTim Kent
