The Bridge gang installed all of the bridges between Dante and St.Paul this afternoon except the multiple bridge at North Boody, and a highway/creek bridge at the wye. In addition the concrete underpass for Burtons Ford Rd. was finished. But the biggest challenge was the Guest R. bridge, seen here from a passing buzzard. The gang was somewhat disturbed to find additional survey flags to the northwest of the bridge, so some explanation is in order. In about 18 years, (1922 or so), the InterState railroad will build it's Guest R. extension from Norton, east to Coeburn, and then south to Miller Yard. This will involve extensive rock work along the Guest R. gorge, as well as two tunnels through solid rock. It will cross the Guest R. (for the umpteenth time) just to the northwest of the CC&O bridge, thence it will parallel the CC&O into Miller Yard, where rather extensive facilities will be built. These will last for about 40 years, and in the 1960s, there will be a lot of coal delivered this way. For several years, between 1932 and 1950 or so, the L&N will have trackage rights as well. Then the Southern will take over about 1963 or so, and within a few years, this line will be abandoned in favor of the N&W line which passes along the ridges just south of St.Paul, and crosses the CC&O at St.Paul.But, we will ignore history, and include a few miles of the Interstate just for operational purposes.J.
