Johnson City, TN 1908It was announce today that because of a shortage of good steel, the Clinchfield Railroad would use a new method of reinforced concrete beams for their various crossings of Lick Creek, near St.Paul, VA. If successful, it will be used elsewhere to replace temporary construction spans.Well, it didn't really happen that way, but ahhh fantasy. Unlike many construction efforts of the period, D&SL on the Front Range, Milwaukee Road in the Rockies, most of the Clinchfields bridges have stood the test of time, and will soon be 100 years old. Copper Creek, N. & S. Holston, Boone Creek, these are all originals. However, lessor streams were bridged with either timber trestles, or small steel beam spans. Over the past 20 years many of these have been replaced with CSX standard concrete spans. These come in two flavors. 12' and 24' spans. Usually, the 24' version is used, but on curves, the 12' version may be required (on sharp curves). Therefore, attached is 5th & 6th Lick Creek bridges, the first being 4x24 or 96' in length, the 2nd being 10x12 or 120' in length. Both use modified SRV end piers. Shortly, I will upload parts ready for insertion into your MSTS routes, as well as an erector set for the TSM users.J. H. Sullivan, P.E. (retired - and yes these were constructed from standard CSX plans)
