Convert3 Question – image 2

Just how big is the margin of error is there when using Convert 3, I found a couple of things very interesting.... Alot of the markers are just alittle bit off *yes, I am that picky* But I need them to be near exactly on, otherwise, the tunnels make it hard to align... as you can see from the pictures I took. The only real thing I saw correct is probably is the Moon Yard and the Grain Yard in Seattle (go figure) The tunnels are off slightly, and with all the other lines going whatever which way makes it difficult to find the main hehe. Sorry for the 5 pics, but I thought it might help outHope there is an easy way to fix this... Auburn is blacked out from the Topo pics.. so, I really REALLY need this fixed...Thanks

Convert3 Question – image 9

let me explain this a bit more clearer.......Pic one, the markers labeled RAIL are the markers created with Convert3, Bridge 4 is located in the correct location, however, the markers are not, there is a very slight margin of error here, this was checked twice with my friends GPS a while ago. *unless the bridge moved*Pic Two, I am assuming this is in the right spot.. it looks like it... if it is, this is the Middle of the Cargill Yard.Pic Three, The old GN/Seattle Tunnel...Pic Four, Tacoma Grain should be on the other side of the markers, not at it's current location....Pic Five... This, I have a tuff call on.. I say the Marker is right, but I don't have a GPS to check....Last Pic.... The markers I inserted are dead on the mainline...
Basicly to make a long story short... i need the makers "corrected" .......HELP ME

RE: Convert3 Question

*Any*, and yes I do mean any, automated system of creating markers for rail lines I have found to be erroneous. There is only one way that I know of doing it, and that is getting satellite pictures that have long/lat capabilities and creating markers from them. I have found them to be so remarkably accurate, that I have found places where I can actual see that the marker is correctly positioned--by land formation.Lawrence

RE: Convert3 Question

I'd say generally within 100 meters. Usually within 25 meters. In my experience the locations that are the farthest off are near S curves, especially ones that go from one side of a river to the other.Another thing I found is that mixing 10 meter and 30 meter DEMs will make the marker data seem to be very inaccurate because the terrain is shifted between the DEMs. Richard

RE: Convert3 Question

Brian:I'd suggest getting USAPhotomaps from http://jdmcox.com/Create GPS waypoint files for your markers. You can then manually convert them to marker files, or wait a few days till I can release an updated DEMEX which will let registered users convert them. You should find alignment with terrain at +-5 meters max.

RE: Convert3 Question

John, Are you suggesting here that DEMEX will convert the marker file that the USAPhotomaps creates??
After reading this thread, I went to get the USAPhotomap software and WOW. I sat up most the night creating the photo maps of the route that I am working on.
I started putzing with creating the marker file, but ran into a limitation within the software that you hit a pretty low amount of markers that you can actually have at least in terms of marking a railline at least, while I do see a way around this in that you can just create as many diffferent marker files then copy and past them all together to create one MSTS marker
My first thought was to contactMr. Cox to see if it were possible for him to add this into his software since, now here I show how Neive I can be with software and code, The marker file that MSTS uses is a simple Text file.
Maybe Im way off base here, But with this software and DEMEX for the contours. Dang, Did it get real easy to make route geography or What?Robert Mapplebeck
