Anybody figured out the format of the .T files? And particularly, anybody figured out how to expand a lo_tiles .T file from referencing one .ACE file to referencing an .ACE file for each of its 16 sub-tiles?There are now (at least) two routes that need snow on the top of Mt. Hood. Somehow, the .T files for the USA2 lo_tiles include multiple .ACE files, so there has to be a way of getting there.David Beach.Palouse & LewistonAny .T file experts? – image 2Route Building 1% Completed

RE: Any .T file experts?

John,I'm just the terrain guy for those routes. Mt. Hood is 300 miles plus or minus from my Palouse and Lewiston. Might be (in real life) able to see Mt. Rainier or Mt. Adams from some of the high points, but probably not from the track, so I don't even have any of the volcanos in my Distant Mountains. The two routes in question are Cal's Columbia Gorge, and Tim "tryagin" Muir's Portland Traction.Obviously we'll wait as long as it takes for that editor. I did post a document here about a year ago with the format of the t file (or as much of it as I then knew) - you might be able to find it in a search of the archive - in the meantime I'll see if I can find the original document.CheersDave C

RE: Any .T file experts?

The .T files are just uncompressed binary token files. So the 'Format' is already understood, but since there is no definitions available in the form of a BNF file, its hard to get started. FFEDIT would expand them if we had that as well.Guess the only folks who could help are MS. Can't understand why not, since they provided the tool (ffedit) and the world/shape bnf info it needs. Must have thought SOMEONE would use it, why not on .t files as well?Martyn T. Griffin

OK, I should have been clearer. When I said format, I meant the file and record structure and the contents of the records.I'll post the document again tomorrow if I can find it - if anyone is interested that is - let me know.Dave C

RE: Any .T file experts?

Definitely interested, as I have this working for .w and .s file so far. WONDER if the sim and re can candle the text form of the file like they do for the others.I say that because decompiling the tokens is a whole lot easier than going the other way!!Martyn T. Griffin

Thanks for that doc,It fills in a number of gaps that I had about most of the token parameters, and I will pursue it further.Sadly, what we are both missing are the formal names for the tokens. With those, we could decompile the files and leave them in text form. I feel positive the sim and re would handle them correctly. They are not (it would seem) in the coreids file based upon the token values. If we had them, it would be 'simple' to construct the bnf file (knowing its filename) and then ffedit would also work.BTW: the token header is actually variable in length. The last byte, which you observed to be always 0, is actually a length field for the following number of unicode characters. That string is the literal name applied to the token, and can actually be used with any token (I experimented with a few in the .w files). We see it most often in the tokens like Matrix: matrix BOX01 ( 1 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 )BOX01 would be stored as a 5 character unicode (10 bytes) and that length byte would be 05
All of that is part of the token extension. Also, the token id seems to be only the first two bytes, with a flag field in the next two bytes. Some .w entries have various values in those bytes. No idea what they mean though. Thats one of the reasons I can't reverse the process and compile the text.Martyn T. Griffin

thanks for the input Martyn. Up until now I have only really been concerned with reading from and writing to the binary file in order to amend tile properties, so have not concerned myself with ffedit considerations (I far prefer dealing with binary files than text files - faster and more logical to read and write ) - nor have I worried to investigate the meaning of fields which I wasn't interested in. However, you've certainly given me a few things to think about here and I'll probably delve a bit more deeply into ffedit and the w and s file structures at some point. CheersDave C

RE: Any .T file experts?

In a day or so, I should have a decoder for the t-files running. Keep getting interruptions though! If it seems to work on a whole bunch of .t files and the sim runs with it, will be able to build the bnf file, if I can figure out what ITS filename should be.Martyn T. Griffin

David,Here is a gaggle of .t files I decompiled with what I know so far.
Key points are:-no accurate definitions for numeric parameters, so made 'assumptions' about float vs uint vs dword etc-there are several other tokens defined, but until I run into them, won't know the format of parameters.-the asbuffer and usbuffer tokens have a note with them saying they should be removed from MSTS by end of 1999!!! They are just large 8k work areas as far as I can see. Most of this would be trivial with the right bnf file. Then ffedit could likely compile them.Martyn T. Griffin

well, this stuff's all going over my head now, but if it helps, this seems to be a complete list of all the token names (I'm not sure if that's the right term, so it probably isn't) that MSTS recognizes.
