A friend of mine worked on a route for some time. Due to a problem with his PC he had te reinstall MSTS. He was able to make a backup of his route and others he had installed. After he reinstalled MSTS he copied back his own route and the other routes, but found that MSTS has an error with these routes. He does not get them to work. Even after a rebuild of his own route MSTS does not recognize it.Does someone know what causes this problem and how he should solve this problem?André www.mstrainstop.com andre@mstrainstop.com

Make sure that these routes have activities. Without activities, these routes will not show up in the sim's route menu. Also, if a route was made with default items the first time, and MSTS was re-loaded with any or some of the original routes NOT loaded, that can cause an error also. Check for activities first. You said "error", what error? Knowing the exact error would help greatly in pinpointing the problems and solution. I sent the question about the exact error to my friend. What i know what happened is this: - MSTS Reinstalled - Routes copied from backup directory to routes directory. These included the activities. - MSTS started - MSTS Shows all the routs. - Route & Train selected - Route starts up but just before the initialization ends MSTS crashes, with a Send Bill comment. So it is not the Activities problem.André www.mstrainstop.com andre@mstrainstop.com
Unfortunately, it can still be an activity problem. MSTS does a lot of unnecessary loading upon startup. This is the procedure he may want to follow:Uninstall MSTS. Delete MSTS directory Reboot computer Reinstall MSTS Start MSTS to check everything working. ********If the above is NOT done, you have no way of knowing what is the problem*********Reinstall -- not copy!!! -- all routes/activities/locomotives **one at a time** that he had before. You can think you have copied everything needed, miss something, and MSTS will not like it.LawrenceEdit: Wrong word in a sentence.
Yeah, troubleshooting these things is often a process of elimination, so you have to do one thing at a time."Routes copied from backup directory to routes directory." You say "backup directory" it sounds like what I do, move the \RouteName folder to a folder somewhere else on the HD, then copy or move it back. Many people back things up by burning a CD, but since I don't have a CD-R/W, I've never done that. I have heard of problems backing up to CDs tho, if the process sets the file attributes to read-only it can cause problems, cured by selecting all the files after copying them to the HD and checking the read-only box off."Train World Initialization Failed" = missing/corrupted envfiles, try copying the \Template\Envfiles folder into the \RouteName folder."Failed to load tape header" = missing/corrupted track textures, try copying all the ace files for track from another route into the problem route or routes;Call Xcopy ..\Europe2\Textures\*track*.* .\TexturesCopy & paste that text into wordpad, save as \RouteName\fixtrack.bat or something, then run it by double clicking on it. If you want a different track texture in the route substitute the name \Europe2 with \USA1 or whatever. There's a whole bunch of stuff it could be, but if it's crashing at the world initialization those are the two most likely culprits. On computers with more RAM you usually get a specific error message rather than just freezing and sending love letters to Uncle Bill. Lawrence (whom I rarely agree with on anything! ) is dead-on with his point, you have to be methodical when troubleshooting, first thing is to find out if it's a trainset, consist, or route causing the problem, then find out which one. Even something like copying an Xtracks based route back in when you haven't re-installed Xtracks yet can cause it to crash/lock up, when the idiot program loads up it checks the sigscr.dat and sigcfg.dat files even in the root folder of routes that have absolutely no signals on them!
Hmmmm....something could be missing from the GLOBAL directory or world files that was there on the original setup. Too many variables to consider to mention here. Make a test activity with a consist that you built. See what happens. Sometimes missing consists can cause an error or MSTS crash. Was the Consist and Train folders backed up too?Kip 3DTS Route Developer The Priest River Railroad"...it's so fictional, it's almost real" PRRR WesiteComing this fall: PRRR's Hoodoo Pass Route
