I tried to create a crossover using two A1tPnt2_5LftMnl.s track sections arranged so that the curved turnout tracks join together (this is described in Michael Vone's "Step by Step Guide" on page 87, latest edition).Unfortunately, no matter what I do, the simulation crashes whenever I approach the crossover and press "G" to enter it.Now, I am sure that I have done this before without difficulty but I have been unable to figure out what I am doing wrong this time. Any ideas?

RE: Back-to-Back Switches

The only think that comes to mind is that you can't join switches with the points facing each other without a 10m section in between. Also, you can't end a section of track at a switch point or else it'll bomb as soon as you press G.

Xtracks has a 1 meter straight section that would probably work and would be an almost unnoticible interuption to the curved lines of the switches.Cal Rasmussen

RE: Back-to-Back Switches

Seems to me there is a 0.3 meter piece (about 1 foot). Not at home this weekend so I can't confirm. Maybe this is part of Xtracks (another good reason to install it!)Martyn T. Griffin

RE: Face-to-face switches

Most people say "back-to-back" they're talking about switches joined at the base, which trainsim won't allow. I use a 2 meter section of dynamic track since my route is a non-Xtracks route for seperating base-to-base switches.
What trueman is talking about is this:Back-to-Back Switches – image 4
Two switches joined at the ends of the curve section to make a crossover from one track to another. Normally that's not a problem, but throwing any switch can lock up the sim if your route has facing return loops or some kind of complete circuit where a continuous path is traced when that switch is thrown. That's not the most common cause tho, what usually happens is people place a bunch of switches along the main, then go to test the uncompleted trackwork before connecting up all the switches.Back-to-Back Switches – image 5
Leaving the base of a switch uncovered, the path logic is looking for a blue pole end-of-track indicator as it traces out the new path after you throw the switch. Any switch has built in blue poles at the straight end and the curved end, but not at the base. So even if you're not intending to do a test run on the mainline until you finish ALL the trackwork, it's still a good habit to temporarily place a 10 meter straight at the base of any switch that isn't already connected to other track. Trace a path to that red pole and there's no blue pole beyond it, it will lock up every time.Back-to-Back Switches – image 6
This cures the lockup.

RE: Face-to-face switches

Thankyou, sniper297. Your explanation was bang-on (as usual). I had ended my track with a switch. When I attached a 10 metre section to the switch, the problem evaporated.
