Thought I'd pass this on.
I've seen some posts here a while back that said they work the route editor until the screen starts to flicker and goes black when saving. Then they stated they would exit the RE, and restart it. I have been using the sustem monitor, monitoring allocated memory and when it showed all memory used up, would then do the save, exit and restart. This caused me to do a lot of restarts as the RE would run for much longer after all allocated memory was used until the flicker was seen. I decided to give it a try and yesterday worked the RE until the flicker showed up. I was placing scenery only, no trackwork at all.
After 7 or 8 hours of work I did my usuall checking of the route using existing activities I wrote for this. The activities just run the entire length of the route, one track path for each activity.

Well HORRORS !!! The route ended up broken in several places, two location along the CSX division, more than 10 miles south of where I was placing scenery and one location on the NEC division where NO WORK WAS BEING DONE AT ALL !!In all 3 cases it was a remove_end_vector thingy, with blue poles between track sections that were previously OK. I had to spend an hour or so repairing this corruption.Nuff said folks. DON'T wait for the flicker. Use a monitor to watch allocated memory and when it maxes out, save and restart. I had been doing this for the entire route build and NEVER had a problem, six months now, until I tried shortcutting by waiting for the flicker.I don't need no stinkin' flickers folks and I aint gonna get no more.Workin' north on the CSX with scenry currently at Perryville, Maryland.

RE: Northeast Corridor Route Editor trials.

Come to the dark side Luke....get Windows XP. No more memory leaks, which means no more screen flicker in RE. I ran RE for about 14 hours straight without having to exit once. And that's with only 256mb DDR RAM.Jeff Leslie

Jeff writes: >>Come to the dark side Luke....get Windows XP.I'm already in the dark side; I use the route editor. :p

Seriously Jeff, that's an invitation to disaster, ie; upgrade when the route is almost finished. . .I don't think so. After almost eight months I am paranoid about doing any upgrades or even installs on the system. Too much chance of problems. The years I spent working for IBM as a mainframe tech taught me NEVER upgrage if you have a critical application running so I will pass until this route is done.I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, about 50 miles to go to Philadelphia. I do plan on building a new system when the route is completed but for now I will live with having to restart the RE every twenty minutes or so. A small price to pay for a stable system, no?

RE: Northeast Corridor Route Editor trials.

Ahhhh, where's your sense of adventure....I upgraded halfway through my route. Just copy the whole thing to a CD-RW and put it back on once you get the new OS installed. No blue screens of death, no memory leak, no random reboots, and you don't need a gig of RAM.Some people say they don't like the fact that Microshaft is constantly querying your system with XP to automatically check for updates, they think it's giving Bill Gates access to their checking account or something. Why would he want what's in my checking account? He probably has more money in the ashtray of his limo.Jeff Leslie

RE: Northeast Corridor Route Editor trials.

For what it's worth, there's a freeware (also a pro version) of a memory manager called RAMIdle. It puts an icon in the sys tray showing your current available menory. Easy way to keep up with it while in RE. Look for it on ZDNet.com. I've tried similar memory utils, but the freeware version of RAM Idle seems to be the best.
