The poor old hard drive in my msts machine started making not so
nice noises. Progressively got worse, so before the meltdown occured, I decided to replace the drive. Backed up everything from the old drive to tape, reloaded 98, and restored the data. Piece of cake, everything seemed to work fine. Until I tried opening a route in progress in RE. My old friend, the send/don't send message popped up while loading it. I tried rebuilding the tdb, but within 1 second of clicking OK the error would pop up. With the trauma of a new drive and a restore I figured there was a lot of possible reasons, so I re-checked that all files did in fact come back. Looked like they all had. Still RE wouldn't load the route. I dropped the original drive back in as the D: drive and used a compare utility. Both C: and D: appeared identical. The only differences were the dates on the files that were restored... they all showed 10/02/02, the date of the restore. Having no life, I decided to try a few things. I deleted the msts folder, and did another restore of just the msts folder, this time across the network using a unix-based backup/restore utility that allowed me to keep the time/date stamps the same as the original. Bingo! RE loaded up the route in question first time, no errors. Rebuild of tdb worked without a hitch. Sooo... i did it again, deleted the msts folder, used the unix proggy to re-restore msts, this time letting the file dates be set to the current date.
Guess what? RE wouldn't load the route. Same symptoms. Back to plan "b" (or was it "c"?)... re-re-restored with original dates, and all is well again. This only occured with the route I have in the works, I was able to load the default routes no matter what. My route is pretty generic so far, no x-tracks, or 3rd party items, only a couple small grass/weed textures, and a couple signs made with tsm, the rest is all stock msts. I've gone in and added
some scenery items, and some more track sections at different locations to see what would happen, and all seems normal. The files that the additions affected show the time/date the changes were made.
I truely don't see how/why the date would make a difference one way or the other, but it sure seems that that was the cause of the problems. Praise the lord and pass the rogaine!
