My searches have found nothing on this. Is there any way to find out what curved wood trestles are available, and is there a way to modify one with regard to radius and/or length? The present issue is to get one with a radius of about 400 meters and a curvature of 60 degrees. The attached picture shows the basic layout, both with a dynamic track as above, and another with a 500r20d track section plus 2 250r20d track sections. Please ignore the S curve alternate route and my non-traditional route markers.

RE: Curved wood trestles

I'm not aware of any curved wood trestles in the library. You might want to contact one of the modeler and see if they can help you with one. There is a kit in the library of a simple wood trestle that can be stacked in the RE into a curve.SRV Ron

RE: Curved wood trestles

The simple wood trestle will work well with the 400 m curve, if you don't need a high trestle. That one is only about 15-20 ft tall. It comes in about 15 ft segments, and you can follow most any curve (within reason).Andy

RE: Curved wood trestles

Don't know which trestle you are referring to, but it looks like my greatest height is about 15 meters, if I don't adjust the terrain below. Cutting that height to one third of actual might be a bad idea. Also, it occurred to me that I can not avoid a 2% grade on this trestle. I wonder if that would make the trestle look weird. Maybe I need to use the alternate S curve alignment, or use fill instead of the trestle. Realism can be a pain. The game technology is excellant, except when it comes to realism.

RE: Curved wood trestles

Don, you should be able to work with the trestles on a grade. It takes some work with the rotate tool, but I've got a couple of low trestles on the Cumbres line in an area where the grade is 3% or more. The way I approached it was the following:- Use the mouse with the move and rotate tools to get the trestle section roughly in place under the track. Rotate left and right (clockwise and counterclockwise) only, not to match grade.
- "Reset" the rotation on the rotation dialog window. This rotates the trestle section back to a 0 deg alignment. The use the up/down keypad arrows to get the correct grade (rotate tool), or at least where it looks close. Then use the left/right arrows to rotate the section back in line with the track.
- Iterate as needed to get everything aligned properly.
- Put down the next section and repeat. It can be pretty time consuming, but once you get the first section set, you have a pretty good idea how many keystrokes it's going to take to get things lined up.I can't recall the file name right now, but I'll look again when I get home.Andy

RE: Curved wood trestles

In the real world, there are no "curved" wood trestles. The distance between bents is usually 10' or so, and on a curve, the bents are arranged to be radials to the curve. This makes the stringers slightly longer on the outside than on the inside, likewise the diagonal bracing etc. If someone has TSM, they might follow the process that Ron Picardi, and I have used on steel trestles. I.E. construct bents of varying heights, generally in increments of 10'. Arrange the laterals, stringers, and diagonals for both sides of the bent, as if there were another to the side (doesn't matter which side), but do not place another bent. Save this as an object, and then arrange these side by side, each one turned slightly, and the visual effect should be fine, even though it probably will not stand close scrutiny. As for Grades & Curves. One I know of, now abandoned, was the "S" curve trestle on the Wallace Branch of NP. This thing had curves that must have been 20 degrees, and was on a 4% grade. If you examine the Lookout Pass Quad. in Idaho, you can find where it was. In 1960 or so, it was replaced with a switch-back, but the line has since been abandoned. Similar trestles exist on the Camas Prairie line up Lapwai Canyon, also in Idaho.J. H. Sullivan, P.E. (retired)

RE: Curved wood trestles

Thanks for the further comments, and also for the C&T route by the way. I checked your route read-me and conclude that the trestle file to which you referred must be the Wooden Trestle Set v. 0.9 by Ray Reyes, which I did have filed away. It does appear that height may well be an issue. Will eyeball at the coordinates to which you referred in the read-me.

RE: Curved wood trestles

Yep, that's the one. The height is a "problem" - actually more of a limitation, but I think to have anything much higher you'd want to have a somewhat different design to reflect the differences in real trestles. Good luck with it!Andy
