Hi Route Groupies...Thought I’d share a few thoughts with you about where I hope I can go with MSTS. Of course, something could come along and change all this, but for NOW, this is what I’d like to do...MEET THE KC&G...Concept: A “Johnny-come-lately” competitor trying to earn a living providing transportation from the Kansas City gateway to the Gulf port area at New Orleans. Because of getting off to a slow start in the race from Kansas City to the Gulf, it lost that race to its major competitor (The Kansas City Southern), thus had to settle for the available alternative routing north-south through the mountains of Arkansas.Era: 1969.Economic Status: Filed for bankruptcy early in ‘69. Currently attempting to reorganize. “Fix up and make do” has been status quo for some years.Locomotive Roster: Aging and overworked remnants of their 1st generation diesel fleet comprise the bulk of their roster. Newest power: A few GP18's. Some second hand power has been purchased, as well as some leased power to help them through their tough times. Rostered engines: Alco S2's, RS1's, RS2/3's, RS11's, FA1/FB1's, EMD F3-F9A's and B's, GP7's, GP9, GP18, Baldwin: VO1000Modeled Portion: Ozark Sub. 100 miles of track and trouble from A point on the Arkansas River, somewhere near or between Clarksville or Russelville, Arkansas to up near Harrison, Arkansas. Hoping to model:1. A small division point yard with rudimentary engine service facilities at the "south" end of the Sub.2. Once in the heart of the mountains, I hope to have serpentine trackage on a hogback profile. Ruling grade to be in the 2.5 - 2.8% range.3. Main online industries: Lots of timber products (ties, lumber, poles, pallets mfg'ers, furniture mfg'ers, etc), along with some limestone industries (gravel crushers, lime plants), as well as coal near the Arkansas River.4. Small Ozark mountain towns to predominate. No urban scenes at all.For those familiar with the Ozarks, no need to post pics. For those not familiar but have seen the Applachians/Alleghanies either in person or via the BR Sub, the Ozarks are a lot like them, only smaller. Elevations for the Ozarks range from 400-500' at the Arkansas River level to 2600' or so for the peaks.I still see several tough things ahead for me to learn: Route building, with its DEM'ing, crashes, etc. Learning more about X-Tracks and making a decision. Weathering like I want to simulate. Along this "weathering" line, to give you an idea of the type of motive power I hope to create within MSTS for the KC&G, below are some pics of the remaining KC&G power I had used on my dismantled HO scale KC&G “Ozark Sub” model railroad. In effect, the MSTS version of the KC&G will be the "expanded" version of my HO model layout I had... but this time with "no boundaries"! (i.e. the Ozark Sub will be an actual 100 miles long!)Well, the above is my "goal"... how long it will take to get there, I have no idea. First order of business is to find out why my eMachines El-Cheapo Special's CD-RW won't write. May have to replace the unit. But I see that as a "must"... 'cause it's my understanding that I will HAVE to have a working CD-RW unit to make backups, backups, and more backups! All for now.Andre "Coonskin" Ming

RE: Meet The KC&G... (Long w/Pics)

Thanks for the kind words Paul. From the silence that followed, looks like we 1st generation freaks are a small minority.Either that or I said something wrong??? Say, if I do this KC&G thing... reckon' the GM&O would be willing to lease them some old power to get 'em through their power-shortage crunch? After all, the two roads DO have a direct connection at KC, you know.Andre

Andre; You have to understand Paul. He is creating a great branch line for the ICG in his work with the GM&O route. He is under some dilusion that the route is for him at this point, but he will wake up some day.

Oooohhhhh! That was COLD! Speaking of the IC/ICG Dave, do you have target era in mind for your route? I always thought the Paducah Geeps were cool engines.
I don't recall getting the opportunity to see some screen pics... or maybe I've just looked at so many screen pics I'm experiencing a "senior moment"??Had a friend that used to work for the IC (clerk) back in the 50's. He tells of experiencing some neat runbys of their crack passenger trains.Andre

The area I'm modeling in central Illinois is from 1978 track charts. The are that Trouble is working on is modern day.As for being cold, have you read some of the post Paul puts out on the ICG! I've learned from him.

...ICG..get it? IC "THE" GULF...get it right IC MAN...your elevator is still stuck in the basement mud...get with the program..kick this pig...move it along, corn field boy!
.
(even David knows ICG was a joke..it ruined two good railroads..IC and GM&O.) Thanks to Harry Bruce...
.
(BTW...a couple of IC Paduka rebuilt GP8's and GP10's would be very nice at this point..though you'll never catch me painting them ICG!)I really like the GP8's with that Horst air filter and the "frog eyes" nose headlight.
.
Yes of course you can use the GM&O power Andre...but hang on a few more days...your going to see a major transformation in the GM&O F unit fleet..you may well want those instead of the present F's on my site..thanks to Marc.

RE: David..you mean IC "THE" GULF...

All right! A good ol' country boy fight! Kickin' and a'wallerin' in the mud!Re: GM&O Power on the future KC&G..."you may well want those instead of the present F's on my site..thanks to Marc."(Holding the envelope to my forehead)...I see... F-Units... F-Units by.... uhh... 3 something... 3D! Yes, it's clear now: 3DTrains!COOL! They will look tremendous. 512 or 1024 textures?I will also be able to use the models for KC&G versions. My HO roster allowed for almost all versions of F's to be included in some way or another. (Including wrecked/rebuilt units so I could have an F9!) When I started with MSTS about 6 weeks ago, such wasn't possible... but through Marc's efforts... it is NOW!Gotta' get this CD writer fixed so I can get started.Andre

RE: Meet The KC&G... (Long w/Pics)

"You know Andre..your locos strangely re-semble the Wabash.."Actually, they are a mixture of the Foundational Four railroads of this region where I have lived, more or less from 1/69-present. * The colors blue and light gray comes from the Missouri Pacific's original paint scheme.* The F-unit schemes are remniscient of the Frisco.* The mixed variations of F-unit phases was from the KCS. (Including replacing the high fan with a low fan on the #300.)* The condition of the units is inspired from the Rock Island mainly, but also and the KCS and Frisco F's and Geeps of the era. That it turned out being hauntingly familiar with the Wabash is serendipity in motion: As a lad in KC, I lived close to the Wabash yard at North Kansas City. I have a soft spot in my heart for the Wabash. Such a emulation wasn't intentional, but has been enjoyed as an added value for me.Andre
