As I type this, the last of the Northern Pacific Standard Plans that I have are being uploaded, should be available for download Monday or Tuesday. If anybody else has access to old documents and would like to get them posted, I would be willing to work with you. I have access to a large capacity scanner (36" wide by ???) that can produce 1 bit TIFF images at 400 dpi. One bit works well with monochromatic plans, (black on white, white on black, blue on white, white on blue). It can also work in higher color depth, but on large plots the files get huge (they get huge at 1 bit when the original is many feet long).David Beach.Palouse & LewistonNorthern Pacific Standard Plans – image 2

LAST EDITED ON Sep-22-02 AT 03:56 PM (EDT)

Thanks Dave! Fascinating stuff that will keep model/route builders busy for a while to come. Nice to know where to place those mileposts and station signs, etc. for prototypical operation, and I'm still learning by reading the plans. Appreciate you sharing all this stuff...

I have an old Southern Pacific rule book from around the 60's or earlier. Not sure of the date. If anyone is interested, I will scan part or all of it and upload. It would probably be best put into a .pdf file but I don't have a way to do that.

RE: Northern Pacific Standard Plans

I have already downloaded some of them, and will be downloading the rest as I am able to log in (gosh that site is busy now).Since, I plan to include the NP Wallace Branch in my Milwaukee Road doings later, I was particularly interested in their trestles. Anyone wishing to do the Camas Prairie would be interested also since it was a NP/UP thing but was built largely to NP standards.I kind of envy you, but I also have access to a 36" scanner at CSx Engr. where I retired. My main job responsiblity was scanning the Engr. documents and getting them into a database. We got all (500,000+) of them scanned, but they are still arguing about what kind of DMS system to use. Though retired, I will probably get involved as a consultant sooner or later. Ours was a WideCom 960 which also did color quite well, and I had a Anatech Eagle for B&W work. As long as it lasted, we were an Intergraph house.J. H. Sullivan, P.E. (retired)

RE: Northern Pacific Standard Plans

I have been playing around with the NP Ice House plans using 3D Canvas. The modeling is going alright, but I don't have any reference material for the skins of the Ice House. Does anyone know of a location where photographs of Ice Houses might be found? (I have been searching on the WWW but so far no luck.)Attached picture is of a 600 ton Ice House. Thanks,

RE: Northern Pacific Standard Plans

I was hoping that someone might have a real answer for you. My guess would be that the buildings would have be whitewashed. Other possibilities would be raw wood or red iron oxide (box car red/barn red).David Beach.Palouse & LewistonNorthern Pacific Standard Plans – image 5

RE: Northern Pacific Standard Plans

Camas Prairie did you say? How much of it are you doing? I will eventually be doing a portion of it my self as that is the only way to get from NP track at Arrow to NP track at Lewiston. The DEMed area I am using, which allows for many possibilities, includes almost all of the Camas Prairie. I am building the P&L at this point, moving extraordinarily slowly, but my terrain will support almost any prototype rail line between 46 and 48 north, 116 and 118 west.I've gotten side lined trying to develop a detailed map of the route to use with my base mapping, and one disadvantage of having a lot of material is that not all of it agrees. RE: Northern Pacific Standard Plans

Hi David,I'm planning on doing all four sub-divisions plus the Nez Pierce and Idaho and the Craig Mountain Lumber Railroad. So far track is layed from mile posts 3.5 (Forebay)to 11.5 (a mile east of the Clearwater bridge at Spalding) on the first sub and from mp 0 (Spalding) to mp 7 (Bundy) on the 2nd sub. Progess is slow as I have to time this computer with my boys.
Thank you for uploading the NP plans, as the coaling tower looks like the one at Lewiston. Do you know when the NP started using the buff and brown paint scheme?CarToad Dave Pasco WA

RE: Northern Pacific Standard Plans

No, I don't know when the buff and brown paint scheme may have come into use. That might be a good question for the NP Tailtell list on yahoo groups, there are some very knowledgeable folks that hang out there. If you are willing to share your endeavors, I would like to get your track when you get done laying track, but before much else goes in. If yours is done before I get to the bottom of Potlatch Creek, I think I now know enough about the track database to merge in another set of tracks.I've got a set of NP profiles from the '30s that includes what the NP called MP123.5 to MP138.5, where MP123.5 (give or take just a bit) is what remained of the wye at Arrow, and MP138.5 is the end of track along the Snake at Lewiston. I have access to, but do not yet have, at least parts of the plans of the yard at Lewiston. There does not seem to be a location on the Profiles labeled Forebay so I am not quite sure where it is.What time frame are you building?David Beach.Palouse & LewistonNorthern Pacific Standard Plans – image 8

RE: Northern Pacific Standard Plans

Hi David,
Starting at the bottom, was hopeing for a 30s time frame.Per CsP Time Table 88, Nov 1946, Forbay is a 200 car siding 3 miles east of Lewiston. I'm assuming that it is a lumber mill siding. What format are the track profiles in? (real or virtual). Am willing to share, could you send me the track profiles? Will check NP Tailtell list later, Thanks.Dave Wise

RE: Northern Pacific Standard Plans

Dave,Actually it is the TellTale list, it was too late and I was thinking of the tails on the TellTale (ahead of tunnel entrances) and switched words.Track profiles are .TIFF scanned images, although I could print 11 x 17 pages into .PDF files. The original images are soooo long that most programs claim the .TIFF is flawed because it exceeds some preset dimension. AutoCAD doesn't have any problem with them as images though. If you provide an email address I will send you MP123 through the end of the line. (Arrow is about MP123.5)So Forebay would be between about MP133.25 and MP134.25 on the P&L.The type of time frame I was asking about when it is set - 1920's, 1950's, etc.David Beach.Palouse & LewistonNorthern Pacific Standard Plans – image 9
