Hi folks..The more objects of course the less FPS. But this post is not for that...I'm asking if anyone else has info on the newer age of video/ graphics cards to come.I'm understanding from the state boys here that their video graphics systems are going back to PCI and away from AGP. If the greatness of the new PCI design I'm hearing of is that great..then HMMM..I spent alot of green fer nothin'..What kind of light can anyone shed on this? Hummmmm, I'm Curious...

AGP was mainly invented to provide more vidio memory. I don't know for fact, but there has to be a trade off there and a performance hit, compaired to a vidio card with lots of memory and no need to access AGP.

What do you mean people are moving back to PCI? AGP is going anywhere, not in the foreseeable future, not at least in workstations/desktops. PCI-X is currently the only production technology that is capable of competing with AGP in terms of bandwidth is relegated to server boards and will be for a good time to come. AGP provides video cards with a faster (~1GB/s vs. 133MB/s for the standard 32bit 33MHz PCI 2.2 bus) more direct (the AGP port is tied into the north-bridge and consequently is more directly linked to the main memory, the PCI expansion slots in most consumer boards is tied to the south-bridge and limited by the bottle neck between the south-bridge and north-bridge) path to main memory.AFAIK AGP was not invented to provide more video memory, the maximum amount of video memory is limited by the size of the video card, and what the GPU can address. Rather AGP was developed to give video cards a way to directly access main memory with out tying up either the PCI bus or the CPU.Currently, AMD's new platform (due 1H02) is going to provide AGP 4X at least, if not 8X. I've seen nothing in Intel's road-maps that indicate that they are either bringing PCI-X to the desktop or they are getting rid of AGP. Not to mention that I've never seen any indication that PCI-X is to replace AGP.

Well..the only reason I ask, is a friend of mine who works as a CISIII at the State of Missouri (pronounced Misery) told me they were working towards getting away from AGP and looking at some new technology with PCI..that's all he has said about it..so I was just curious if anyone here had heard about such and could comment..I know very little about it. Thanks for your info.

I'm a government employee myself and I'm here to tell you that governments (city, state, federal, whatever) don't make their decisions about computer hardware based on the latest technology, they make their decisions based on money. They will 99% of the time go with the lowest bidder, no matter what. Also 99% of the time their so-called "upgrades" are usually several years behind the current technology. Then to top it all off they will tell the users of the equipment that what they are getting is the latest technology and that nobody else has anywhere near what they are getting. Face it, you walk into Best Buy and what you are buying is already old when you load it into your car. It's quite possible that your freind's department is going to be using PCI-X for a custom built server system for a specific purpose, and my guess would be that the reason they went to that is because they got some sort of bargain on it. I would bet that it serves their purpose, was the right price, and that they didn't have FPS in MSTS in mind when they purchased it.

Thanks for your input.
