Having been to that area and ridden the train on numerous occasions, I will say that you have captured the feel of the area magnificently. Your route will be superb. What rock textures have you used?Andre "Coonskin" Ming

RE: Silverton Branch update (with Fozzy's K36)

Andre,You guys have me at a small disadvantage; I've never been there. All that I know is from books and web sites. I've looked at hundreds of photos, and that's where I got the raw material to assemble the custom terrain textures. Some of you may recognise a large part of the one below. Maybe two thirds of it came from an obviously favorite location on the east side of the river, looking back across at the High Line. (How do you get there, anyway? ) I just grab bit and pieces, edit out the trains and track and weld them together in PSP7. If you look carefully, you can notice some repeats in the texture below. The transitions were cloned from corresponding US2 scrub and forest textures. The lighter, greyish rock texture is simply a color balance adjustment to the brown one.Probably best not to use the one below, since it was crunched way down to upload it.regards,
charlie

Way to go Charlie!!The "could you please post a screenshot" people should never have to bother you again. Looks like you did a great job on the trackwork and the scenery looks great too. All you track help has made progress on Marshall Pass so much faster. Thanks!
Can't wait to see this...

RE: Silverton Branch update (with Fozzy's K36)

Very nice Charlie. I also used to live close to the route. When I was in 1st and 2nd grades, I lived in Durango and could run down the street and watch as the trains would cross Main Street. I've also been up and down the highway to Silverton numerous times, and you've really captured the Shalona Lake area. Again, very nice work. One of these days we'll have to dig out the line between Chama and Durango, and then on to Dolores, Rico, and up the hill!Robert - where did you live? I grew up in Aztec, NM, and have relatives in both Durango and Cortez. I definitely miss it, now that I'm in the Southeast.Andy

You know Andy, I have been tempted to add the three Silverton railroads. A little research, a couple of DEM's, a few more miles....Nah, better stay focused. Maybe in version 2.regards,

RE: Silverton Branch update (with Fozzy's K36)

And believe me, Charlie - once you get the D&S out on the street, there will be no end to the little things that need to be repaired, redone, and upgraded on the one route that's out there. Not to mention that you'll probably get a bit tired of laying out forests and all the other "little" things that make the route fun to drive. So you'll probably need a break after the D&S effort. But I've started working on the web from Antonito - I've just laid the first few miles of track toward Santa Fe, and I hope to get back to Alamosa as well. Once that's done, I'm pushing on toward Durango! You'll be connected with the rest of the D&RG then! I expect the route building will go about as fast as it did in the 1880s, but I'm hoping that it's not nearly as hard on the back OR the bank! We'll have to nominate a rotating "Gen'l Palmer" for the road if it ever gets that far .Andy

Look real close to the right when the train is on the rock shelf past Hermosa. You'll see Butch and the Sun Dance Kid jumping into the Animas River. Some of the scene was shot from the right of way. That would make a interesting easter egg.

RE: Silverton Branch update (with Fozzy's K36)

the route in coming along great, looks awesome, but i have one question, will it be the modern day Durango and Silverton line or historical to match an earlier era? either way though it looks great!Silverton Branch update (with Fozzy's K36) – image 38

RE: Silverton Branch update (with Fozzy's K36)

Bill,For most of the railroad, the "when" simply doesn't matter much, but I've always called it the Silverton Branch, D&RGW.Go here:
http://www.ghostdepot.com/rg/mainline/san%20juan%20branch/durango.htm
and compare the 1903 D&RGW to the modern D&SNGRR track plan. My version is much closer to the 1903 plan, but with some attention paid to some 1930's and 1940's photos. Finally found some 1940 photos of the RGS and Hwy 160 river crossing at Durango. Gotta get rid of that 1890 trestle.regards,
charlie
