How far are speed restrictions valid? – image 2

Hello,I am trying to put up some provisional speed posts in my route, to make the activties a little more realistic. There should be only a few, so I need to know how far they go, especially over wyes, changes of direction, etc.?Thanks for your help!Greetings,
Roni

RE: How far are speed restrictions valid?

It depends on many factors. For example on the BR sub, which is in the file library, some of the speed limits extend for 50 miles (Erwin to Altapass) for example. In other cases, it may apply only to a single curve. Then there are local ordinances where some little town decides the trains are going to fast and puts in their own speed limit which normally extends from town limit to town limit.Where curves go up to 10 degrees (as on the BR sub.), the limit will be in the area of 25mph, but there are a few areas that drop to 10mph because of 14 degree curves. The Blue Ridge loops area has a speed limit of 35 mph as I recall, because the curves do not exceed 8 degrees, but it would be suicidal for a freight to go that fast downhill, and impossible to do going up hill.Once the Piedmont area is reached, around Marion, NC, the speed goes up to 50mph, but there are still restricted areas. One thing to remember, is that if you start an activity, after the start of a speed restriction, it may not show up in the little box on the screen. Don't know why, another glitch in MSTS I guess.J. H. Sullivan, P.E. (retired from CSX Engr. Dept.)

RE: How far are speed restrictions valid?

If you are asking about MSTS speed limits, then I think they extend until the next speed limit, or resume speed post, or signal that restricts speed. If the track branches, the speed limit seems to apply to both branches. But it may be more complex than this: any opinions?Michael Vone

RE: How far are speed restrictions valid?

Mike, I think you are right. One of the confusing things with speed limits is that they were only half implemented in MSTS.First, there is the default speed limit. Unfortunately, there is only one, not one for freight and one for passenger. If nothing else is there, this is the speed limit that takes effect. When a speed limit sign is encountered, the limit posted takes effect for passenger, freight, or both, depending on the option checked in the properties. It stays in effect until the "resume speed" post is found (goes back to the default) or until a different speed limit sign is encountered. One speed post will apply to as many as 4 tracks within a certain distance of the marker. That means it is next to impossible to impose different speed limits on adjacent tracks, even though this is quite possible in real life. I believe the same is true for restricted speed zones set up in activities, but haven't checked.Limits seem to follow both sides of switches. But if you start in a yard, or somewhere in the middle of a restriction zone, the results seem to be different, depending on paths, the way switches are thrown, etc. For example, on Marias Pass, start an activity on one of the tracks in the yard at Whitefish. Some will show a speed limit of 20, which is the limit on the main tracks through that area. Some will show 79, which is the default route limit on MP3, 70 on MP1. Also, if you start such that your train extends over a speed limit sign, you will start off with that limit set. Start in front of the speed limit sign (within the limits) and you probably won't start with the speed limit you would expect. I have never quite figured out the set of circumstances that determine what speed limit is picked initially.Bob Siederer

RE: How far are speed restrictions valid?

I've been dabbling the speed prospect for a little while now. Not very impressed with MSTS's versions. I have been using Hank Sundermeyer's signals (slsig30.zip in the download section) for better realism and control concerning coming upon switchs or red signals up ahead. The switches are programmable. By using absolute signals and premissive signals accordingly, it automatically sets the proper speed limits according to most railroad rules. Of course you still need to install the speed limit signals yourself in open areas. With these signals, I rarely have to use "resume speed". The signals I install along the track automatically revert to the default speed the route maker intended. Very nice in my opinion. I will say this about Hank's signals....they can be confusing learning what each one will do and the proper one to place. My two cents.KipHow far are speed restrictions valid? – image 4

RE: How far are speed restrictions valid?

Signals don't enter into what I was describing earlier. A speed limit set by a signal supercedes the track speed limit and is, by definition, temporary and until the next signal modifies it.The speed limits for the route, and "temporary" speed zones are what you would use if all signals were green and you took no diversions. A switch also has a speed limit, so if you take a divergence, you have to honor the speed limit of the switch, even if the signals are green and the speed limit for that section of track is faster, until your train has passed all the way through the divergence.Bob Siederer

RE: How far are speed restrictions valid?

Speed restrictions only cover the distance of the affected track. This may be a few metres or kilometres, depending in the nature of the rail condition. Some speed restrictions may also be placed due to visibility problems with approaching signals. The choice is yours completely. How far are speed restrictions valid? – image 7
