It's me again and I have the same report to make about the MBTA.
All the tracks were laid. All 43 miles of them. I had about 20% of the scenery in.This was I think the 15th or 16th time I tried creating this route and guess what? I got a corrupted file somewhere in this route section and once again, the route failed.I just don't know any more. At 65 years old I can't afford to try too many times to recreate this route. My problem started this time when I put in a bunch of new downloaded stuff like objects and things. After I did that, I backed up the route like I always do and when I tried going into the editor to work some more on the route, I got the infamous << SEND, DON'T SEND >> screen.
My biggest mistake was backing up my route cause the backup had the same corruption in it.AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!Joe Fortier alias simerjoe@cox.netI give up.Phooey!

Joe, tie a knot on the end of the rope and hold on tight Probably everyone of us here has had this happen over and over again. It's too late to help on this one (maybe and maybe not), but my strategy is .. after I make some changes and hit a stopping point (however much I'm willing to lose) I go through and test it completely before backing it up. Then I rotate backups by date so if something fails, I can keep going back until I find one that doesn't have the problem. I didn't learn this until about 6 months into my present route which is why I now can't rebuild the database. Also, you're work may not be lost, but there are people here who are more equipped and knowledgeable to help on this than myself. I will let them help and if no one does, I'll do what I can

RE: I'm really cursed

Don't give up yet!
I'm 120 miles into a 130+ mile route that I have been working on since last fall. I have had hundreds of crashes and corruptions but was always able to salvage the route. I gave up for awhile, but came back around. I'm sure with enough clues the brains around here can get you going again.I do advise you keep a rolling backup scheme though. For example I keep a rotateing set of zip files of the route and replace one of them with a new backup every day before I start working on the route. This way if I muck the route, and the last backup is trash too, I can go back to the 2nd or 3d day old backup and only loose a day or two's work. If the route editor will make you beleive in anything, it's backups, backups, backups. There are guys around here that are better at this than me, but I'll give it a try.
Now, at what point does the editor crash? If the crash started after adding scenery stuff, that's the easiest crash to fix. Your track DB should be good, only your scenery placement (.w) tiles are probably messed up. RE automatically makes backups of these files as you work. Do you know how to replace those .w files with the backup .bk files? If not we'll help. Worse case, you might have to delete the tiles worked on that day, replace them with blanks and re-edit that part of your route. Still easier than starting all over.lfriddle

RE: I'm really cursed

Oops, forgot one really important thing. First go back to your .ref file and take out all the scenery items you put in that day.

RE: I'm really cursed

I've had this happen before a few times thinking all was lost. It will take a little work to recover, but it can be done. What I usually do is is I erase all of the *.bk files in the routes' folder. I erase these, then rebuild the track database. This way the program cannot go into the backup files and retreive other data that is not needed or was changed. The reference files can be fixed since it can be edited. There could be a mis-spelled word or parameter incorrect that can cause this problem. Whatever zip file you loaded into the routes' ref file, go into it and get the file names and go into the ref file and erase them. Usually, after erasing the backup files in your route folder and then rebuild the database, you can get into the route editor. You might get a message that says that there are objects "loaded" in the route but not in the ref file. It will ask you to erase them....say yes. If that is the case, save the route, dump out of RE completly and re-start. If your route loads with no errors, then back it up. Then repair the necessary items that were removed. I have done this about 4 times already. RE is very touchy and a very "buggy" program. DO NOT erase the route folder yet. It can be salvaged. Try to get rid of the items in the ref file you recently put in. See if that cures the problem. Sometimes, folks that make route objects make a part of the ref file to paste on your routes' ref file. There have been times when they have made typo errors. I always read them carefully before pasting them in the ref file. Good Luck!! KipI'm really cursed – image 3

LAST EDITED ON Sep-05-02 AT 12:31 PM (EDT)

This is getting to be a bit too much.
I started rebuilding MBTA from scratch. Started by putting in South Station. Then I put in all straight tracks reaching beyond the walking platforms. Saved what I did then proceeded to create a new activity to test it out. As soon as I typed in an activity name, guess what. I got everyone's favorite screen >> SEND, DON'T SEND <<.AAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RE: I'm really cursed

You may have corrupted installation. I don't know what other reason would cause that, if you really started a new route.BTW, I have stored last 60 backups, and only 4 or 5 of them have textures included. Removing textures frees up over 250 MB/backup. But still I have my HD almost full, I have 3 gigs of source material (photos etc.) for creating repaints/models/routes. Then there are other folders with the same amount of stuff...

RE: I'm really cursed

I'm not sure when you got the error message, but when you are in the activity editor you must put something in the desciptions. One in activity description and the other is the activity brief. You must put something....anything. If you don't, the program "burps" and will give you the "send/don't send" message. Also in the route itself, make sure the track ends are properly "ended". Use the track buffers for "official" ends. I have found that by not doing so, and you make a path in the activity editor, you might still see the start and end dots...but...it still isn't a completed track. The program will try to calculate the activity and fail because of that. Sometimes you'll get a "broken" path message. Just make sure you write something in the activity description and briefs parts.KipI'm really cursed – image 6

RE: I'm really cursed

This new 'BURP' happened even before I got the chance to put something in the description box. It happened just after I typed in the activity name.

RE: I'm really cursed

Now I'm really pissed.I did a new install of MSTS. I started over again creating MBTA.
Put in train staion. Put in some tracks. Now when creating a brand new activity to test out the route, as soon as I hit return after typing in the activity name, yep you guessed it. >>>>> SEND, DON'T SEND <<<<<I really feel like using some dirty language.Anyone know how I can get in touch with Bill Gates?
I feel like suing him for all the aggravation.
How about we all start a class action suit against Microshit?OOPS! Excuse the language. lmao

RE: I'm really cursed

This is really weird. I have no idea about this(I hope when I reinstall everything this won't occur for me!). Fresh install should fix this, except if you have corrupted Wintendo(=Windows). Or did you install any addons? If Micros0ft would hear my "comments" after several dozens of crashes, they would be out of business immediately...

Joe:You're downfall is you have no patience. Many times we've seen this post from you, many times we've offered advice and suggestions for how to save things, and then every time instead you delete, flame, and then start over.Email me at dem_ex@hotmail.com if you're interested and I'll set up an ftp account you can upload your route to. I promise I can recover your route. I will then explain step by step how you can do it yourself.
