Here in the Pacific Northwest stands one of the most beautiful mountains in the world, Mt Hood, in the State of Oregon, viewable from many parts of this state's largest city, Portland. Now, for the first time, the majestic volcanoe,(ex), is seen from the Portland Traction route, that is just beginning to take its' first steps. From the vacinity of Council Crest, at 4 o'clock in summer, it is clearly visible to the East. Still needs snow, but its' there!!!Thanks to David Beach for this wonderful view. His DEM knowledge and generosity made this possible. Cheers!!Tim
You mean you got another piece of rolling stock stuck up on Council Crest butte?? I thought you learned your lesson when you got that steeplecab stuck up there!!Looks great. Mount Hood is clearly visible from The Dalles Dam. When I get back from vacation, I will try to implement distant mountains in my route. I currently don't have the DEM data for Mt. Hood but that is easily solved. When you figure out how to put the snow on top, let me know. Cal Rasmussen Beaverton, ORColumbia Gorge Route (The Dalles Dam 99% done)
Naw, that was David who got stuck up there in the steeplecab. I'm just following him! You can see the top of the mountain down in Sellwood too! It's awesome!I'll let ya know when and if we ever get snowfall, and the how-to's and what-nots. Have a great vacation!!Tim
Cal,Snow may well have to wait. Nobody has posted a solution for getting the individual sub tiles within a distant mountian tile textured. It's possible to hack the .T file and put in a different texture than the terrain.ace file, but what ever that texture file is, it will be used four times. So we could have white on the top of Mt. Hood, but somewhere there would be a sharp line between the white and the green.I would be willing to do your distant mountains for you, as I have half or more of the files needed already, if you would like. Send me an email to davidbeach @ spiretech.com .David Beach.Palouse & Lewiston
Thanks, David I may take you up on that. A couple other mountains that may be visible from the Gorge are Mt. Adams and Mt. St. Helens. Wonder if you have data on those in addition to Mt. Hood.Another question--what does distant mountains do to performance. I am doing my work on a machine which, by today's MSTS standard and requirements, barely runs! 12 FPS on a good day! If I max out the sliders, SV2 brings it to a halt! I don't know what the total poly count is at The Dalles Dam but when I drive a train up onto the upper deck of the powerhouse, my frames drop about half. Don't know what the DM's do to frame rates, but unless you can come up with a good gorge rain, you know the ones where the clouds are down to the river, you just have to have the distant mountains. Tim's route has Rainier, Adams, St. Helens, Hood, and Jefferson, all of which should (plus I've heard even Sisters) be visible from Council Crest. The Sim seems to petter out at about 50 miles, Hood is 48 or 49 miles (exact distance and bearing in a previous post) from Council Crest, the others are all further, so none of them show up.David Beach.Palouse & Lewiston
