I'm Leaving the Forums!

Temporarily!! Going on vacation for a couple of weeks. My wife and I are going down to California and tour the coast from San Francisco, South to around Santa Barbara and then come back up through the central San Joaquin Valley. I am going to keep my eyes open for railroad photo ops but will be concentrating my photographic skills on the scenery.Some last minute news and plans. I managed to get a factory technician to come out to the boat and between us, we got that radar antenna to rotate. I took some photographs yesterday of boat wakes and hope to come up with a realistic wake that can be put behind the towboat.I know someone is/was working on a McDonalds Restaurant. It is a modern version of the restaurant. One of the original McDonalds with the red/white stripes on the side and the huge arches going up through the roof has been preserved in East Portland. I shot pictures of it and plan to model it when I get back from vacation. That will be "Old McDonalds!" Now, if I can just locate a sign that goes with it. I don't remember exactly what they looked like or I would freelance one.I am still planning two more barges and another towboat in early October.The Dalles Dam structure is complete. I am now in the process of landscaping and adding scenery around it. I have resumed laying track in The Dalles yard. As I proceed West, there is a region or UTM boundary waiting for me. I don't know, yet, what is going to happen when I get there but you all will be the first to know. When I originally created the route in RGE, I opened two windows, one in each region, and selected the desired tiles. I am hoping it saved as one quad-tree.I am leaving Thursday morning and returning on September 15th.

Hey Cal,Have a great holiday! Get some fresh ideas! ( maybe should re-phrase that to MORE ideas!)Concerning that Mcdonalds, maybe the Macdogfood's website might have some history links. (I thought they preserved the original sign with the restaurant! -darn!)Cheers!!Tim

Hi Tim,
The sign on the front of the building is there but the sign on the street is a modern sign. This McDonalds is on East Powell Blvd about a block West of I-205. The old building is closest to the street with a modern version behind it. The old building apparently is used only for parties now.

Yeah. That be the one. Actually, I found that picture a couple of hours ago and was going to post it myself. Check out that Ford. I think that is the Thunderbird Hardtop convertable. And a 56 Chevy next to it.It is interesting to note that there was no inside dining and no drive-through in those early restaurants. You had to walk up to the front window to place your order. The hamburgers really were 15 cents--the same ones that are about 69 cents now. According to a friend who worked in one of those places in Sacramento in the early 60's, McDonalds philosophy at that time was to get the customer in and out quickly. They didn't want you to hang around. The parking was somewhat limited and they wanted to move people through as quickly as possible. Some of them had a couple of picnic tables in front of the building but they really didn't want you to use them.

I think, by the way that that is a 56 Ford Crown Victoria if memory serves me correct. Either that or a Mercury, but I think it is a Ford.Have a good one, and would love to see that Macdonalds in the sim and the cars with it, hint hint!!!!Tim

Have a great trip, and if you end up coming back through Sacramento, take the J st exit off I-5 in Downtown Sacramento and follow the signs to go check out the california rail museum, Its well worth any detour you may have to make

I am planning on visiting the Railroad Museum and Old Town on my way back. I was there for the grand opening many years ago. I've never seen so many historic steam locomotives in one place, fired up, before. 4449 was there in her SP Daylight colors.

When you are heading south down the 101, and you pass through Salinas, Soledad, Greenfield and King City, wave at Greenfield, I live there. Just don't blink or you'll miss it. Enjoy the view of the UP coast route that runs right next to the 101, runs there off and on from Salinas all the way to Santa Barbara, and you will get a great look at Cuesta Grade. If you can, when you pass through San Luis Obispo, get off at Hiway 1 (Santa Rosa Street, north to Morro Bay (turn right), and look for Stenner Canyon road about 8 miles up the hiway on the right. Turn right on Stenner and look for this bridge, it is the lead in to the horseshoe turn on the south-west side of the Cuesta Grade. (sorry for the poor picture quality, I have a nicer camera now... )
