DEMEX has switched servers and now has a new address:http://www.dem-ex.comTo celebrate our move Lawrence Kellie has written a new tutorial on creating route terrain with DEMEX. The tutorial takes the first time DEMEX user step by step through the terrain creation process - from selecting the tiles in the RGE to downloading the DEMs to final terrain.Even the experienced DEMEX user might find a new trick or two. The tutorial is available for free now on the new DEMEX site.

>thank you once more for DEM-EX TUTORIALS! The type of DEM that works with Demex is, for all intents and purposes, only available in the US. There are other options, which can be "forced" to work in Demex, but for the most part, you will probably be quite unhappy with the results.Lawrence

>Thanks ED You ask if the DEM has to match the coordinates from train sim. I am guessing that you are referring to the latitude/longitude values in shown in the Route Geometry Extractor (RGE). Correct?Any geographical locations, and this includes latitude/longitude values, in the Demex Tutorial MUST be viewed as an example. In other words, when you create your route, which, for sake of discussion, is located in Texas, you will not use values for New Hampshire--which is where the Laconia route is located--which would also explain how you got the same result three times! The RGE portrays the geographic location and whereever you select your tiles, is where you will have the route. As I stated at the beginning of the tutorial, "If you do not know how to generate a route using the RGE, please follow the help file that comes with it." I do not explain that RGE's usage in the tutorial. You also ask how close the latitude/longitude values need to be. Well, it sounds like you have experienced, three times, what happens when they are NOT close! You get the area for that you have values for. Therefore, if you have values for New Hampshire, you will get New Hampshire. If you have values for Utah, you will get Utah. How close do they have to be? Use the example in the tutorial for your guide. If you notice, we have enough tiles to have terrain on both sides of the track. If you are in very hilly terrain, you do not need to select as many tiles to each side of the track. If you are in very flat terrain, you may need to select more. The longest distance that MSTS will render, without the use of Distant Mountains, 2000 meters--which is one tile.Lawrence
