Enclosed are 2 pics, one taken from route editor
showing the donner summit area after demming out
the route ,before applying textures the other
is the plans for the roseville yard

I have made some great progress on the route,
all demmed out from sac to salt lake city utah,
roseville yard trackwork is 65% complete.
@ 50% of the sparks yard trackage is in place.
Im going to do the route in two parts, sac to sparks,
then sparks to salt lake, then after those are completed,
tested, and all the bugs out, ill combine into one
large mega route, with future plans to make the
loop north from sparks through the feather river canyon,
and south down the ca central valley back to sac!
(getting ambitious a little huh?) the route is actually going
to be 2 routes, in 2 different time periods, to accomodate
steam fans as well as diesel. only dif between the two
is in the scenery and structures, trackage is almost
identical so will be able to share the same basic quadtree.
I may even add an extra route in the form of
Sacramento light rail, for the traction buffs!
I bought a copy of ts modeler the other day so
when i get the pics of the I st bridge in Sacramento
(someone is sending me these this week) ill have the
tools to build the bridge.
It wont be too long, ill have a working yard,
when i do, ill post some more screenshots

Yep, lotsa track, and lotsa work, but being disabled and not able to hold a job i got all the time in the world

and if you think that is a big yard, wait and see, this route will have the full sacramento yard, and the entire sparks nv yard to boot, lottsa switching opportunities

Hey pdave1s, Is this schematic a representation of before or after the major rebuild of the yard? It's probably going to be a couple of months before my route gets to this destimationsince I'm coming from WAY South of here.Matt

RE: Donner Pass Route Update

Dave, Are you only using the schematic or do you have other sources? The reason I ask is that the two sources I'm using now are useless. The Terraserver has pics of the Roseville yard as of 1997/1998, after all the track has been taken out. Topozone.com looks like somebody hand drew all the lines for the roads and used a pattern fill for the yard. Unless I can find some other sources of pictures, diagrams, maps, etc. this schematic, if it's all right with you to use, may very well be the only useable source for the Roseville yard upon which I can use to build from. I'm starting from Union Station in Los Angeles, so Roseville won't be for a while. Terraserver's map are too new, a lot of the yard track around union station and the main yard a little north of there are either gone or rearranged compared to Topozone. Topozone's maps are okay, but you can only enlarge them so far so details are not clear enough. Very frustrating when you want to try and be reasonably accurate with your route.
Size is not issue with me. The yard I'm working on is about 2.5 miles. I know, nothing compared to Roseville, but when I get there, I intend to do the full length. For now I'm going back to do some reworking now that Xtracks has curved switches. Will make like a lot nicer. Thanks,
Matt

Kazba my friend, you haveto look in the right places to find the good data, i have a folder with a stackof maps, the first one is entitled
enbiromentally sensitive area map index, followed by 15 double lenght pages at a scale of 2" to the mile covering the area from Roseville, to norden(Donner Summit) my source is getting the sets sac to roseville, and roseville to reno! Use a creative mind and think, who would need maps this detailed. thet als show ever access road, and which are gate, and which are not(clue) my source has asked me not to reveal him to others, but that he would respond to any who contacted him on their own. also got a full set of up maps, but they are in 1/4"to the mile and just about useles, but the big maps show rosevill ryard in it entirety, right down to building numbers and building addresses!!! hmmmm what agency(would need that sort of data??
So far the data i have compiled on this route fits into one 2" binder, and 9- 1 1/2" binders, and weighs over 50 pounds!!

RE: Donner Pass Route Update

Confounded all, Dave. You sure know how to make a guy feel stupid at least with regard to the schematic. One of those typical, 'the answer is so close it's right under your nose'.Now some of those other maps you mentioned have me a bit stumped. I can think of a couple of government agencies that might have that kind of data. However, given the kind of security climate that exists today because of 9/11, what's the likelyhood of getting such data unless one had an 'in'? Granted, I don't think that I'll need maps as detailed as the one you have. Most of what I've been doing is getting a general layout from the topozone map and extrapolating some addition data from terraserver. Thus far it's worked, but I suspect that I'll have to get more creative as I get farther north.

I dloaded more stuff in 2 hours than ive been able to dload in 2 months at 56.6
for those who are following this project, my e:mail address has changed, i can now be reached at
pdave1s@sbcglobal.net while I have been able to recover some data after the virus, most of my e:mails, and Email list is gone

RE: Donner Pass Route Update

Which would you guys prefer in regards to Donner Pass,
The route will actually be two, based on most of the same trackage. The difference being the time period, and the yards
circa 1940 with the Huge Sacramento yard, large roundhouse, and steam repair shops or
circa late 1970's With the sac yard in its prime with all the Diessel repair shopsDave

RE: Donner Pass Route Update

Seeing as how the libray is now slower than ever due to limiting dloads, and use of dload accelerators, those interested in dloading Donner Pass when it is ready, will have to dload it at avsim, seems funny, but their forum is growing by leaps and bounds, and its all familiar facesDave

RE: Donner Pass Route Update

Dave, Looking good!!!!! Too bad you can't have a functioning hump yard. I have the Cajon route from 3D trains, it has a hump yard but it's there for looks. Due to a lot of MSTS limitations it would be very difficult to have a working hump yard. The biggest limitation is that you can only control the switches that are immediately in front and behind your train. Options would be to either groan and bear it and simply switch the hump with very short trains or level out the yard with the rest of the terrain. Visually, the second option might not be the best, but you could at least switch the yard.Matt

RE: Donner Pass Route Update

Dave,Isn't this fun? If you look through the old archives you can see that I had completely DEMed the route from Sparks to Roseville and laid track from Roseville to Verne NV. Had about 70% of the Davis yard including the hump. Then it all went to hell. The annoying part was that the Davis Yard is not flat or level (it's only 6 miles long you think they could have filled and cut to make it level but nooooo). The really annoying part is that the switch uncoupling problem makes it such that, for me at least, it is impossible to run a train from Roseville to Verne or the other way around. As you traverse the route with switches 10-20 miles apart the bug just amplifies over every one. I had the break strength set as high as 10e7 and the jerking is so severe by the time you reach Emmigrant Pass from either end it actually derails the cars when it can't break the couplers, at any speed, even after stopping and restarting the train; 100% of the time. So my trackwork is on hold for the time being. If you want any part of the terrain or trackwork I did let me know. It's ~53MB culled and compressed but without the Davis yard probably about half of that.
Cape Horn to Blue canyon, Emmigrant Pass, the east side of Summit Tunnel to Truckee and along the Truckee River to Verne are quite spectacular to me even if it is plain old green terrain. For now I've got to get the distant mountains in there. So much of the effect along the American River, east of Emmigrant Pass and Donner Lake is lost cause the other side is more than 2K away. Then on to mileposts and signals and maybe that time MSTSv2 (hopefully compatable and with some of the bugs fixed) will be out and on from there.
Richard

kazba you got a good eye, the team track is now re aligned, i was working on past that area, and just dropped in some track to indicate where itwas, now im working on the north side of the yard where the hump should be, not sure how im gonna handle that yet, as to have a working hump wont happen,im debating on just leaving the ground flat and let it be used as a switching yardDave
