I know that Wordpad can save files in Unicode format, which is essential for all the MSTS parameter files. But it's not very convenient, cause it doesn't indicate if a file loaded in is already in Unicode format, or even which of the "Save As" format choices refer to the Unicode format. (This is the best of my knowledge; I might need to stand corrected on some of this).I remember a long time back some folks made suggestions for their favorite Unicode Editors, but I can't find those in a search. I figure a better editor would address my problems with Wordpad. Can anyone suggest a more convenient Unicode Editor? Thanks much.Jeff

RE: Unicode Editor?

Well, I can't speak for your WordPad, but mine, when I choose SaveAs, then choose Save as type, I see the choice Unicode Text Document. That looks like clear referencing of the fact that it is Unicode.. Regarding the file loaded, it doesn't really matter if there is any indication that it is Unicode or not. Just edit it. If it was Unicode when you opened it in WordPad, then when you save it, it will still be Unicode. However, if you do want to know if it was Unicode, all you have to do is File, SaveAs. It will show as Unicode in the Save as type box, if it is Unicode.Lawrenceps. In answer to your question, I would be surprised if there was a Unicode Editor--by that, I assume you mean Unicode only. lrk.

RE: Unicode Editor?

Interesting!Maybe cause this Wordpad is in Win95. Maybe later versions have the Unicode option, like yours does. I'll have to check some of the other machines here. But even though it's not an explicit option, it works! Stuff I've edited and saved in Wordpad works in MSTS, stuff saved in Notepad does not. The file choices in my Wordpad are "Text Document" and "Text Document (MS-DOS format)".I wonder if a copy of Wordpad from WinME or W2K works in a Win95 environment? Anyone know?Jeff

RE: Unicode Editor?

Thanks! I'll check it out.I did discover that Wordpad from W2K, and Wordpad from WinME (which is different), that neither of them work in Win95. Both of them indicate a missing DLL, which is not used in either of their original operating environments.Jeff

RE: Unicode Editor?

Wordpad from Win2K also changes the extension to txt, and leaves the filename as 16 bit type, with the "~" in the name. Try one from W98 it might work with W95..

RE: Unicode Editor?

Checked it out, and find it very useful (on initial inspection only, of course!)One initial discovery, for those saving in Unicode. There seem to be several flavors. The Unicode used by MSTS seems to be NOT something called UTF-8. It does seemed to be something variously referred to as "Wide Characters" and/or UCS-2 LE.For what it's worth. Thanks for referring me to that!Jeff

RE: Unicode Editor?

I downloaded EditPad, when I was more of a newbie. Then I figured out WordPad was much better suited, so I just recently deleted EditPad.On my WordPad (I have Win 98 SE), I have the Unicode Text Document Option...------------------------------------------------------------I'll never let go of the railroad that inspired me to involved with trains, the Union Pacific!Unicode Editor? – image 2

RE: Unicode Editor?

I realize that this may not be the answer you want, but Windows 95 is at least 7 years old now. Upgrading would not only solve that problem, but probably provide better performance all around. :/Lawrence

RE: Unicode Editor?

I totally agree. I run MSTS on a WinME machine. But I'm working on developing some ideas in code, and I can't always work on the WinME machine, or one of the W2K machines I have at work. The ANCIENT Thinkpad I have will only run Win95, and it's a stretch to do that!So you kind of work with what you've got, you know? But I appreciate the thoughts.Jeff
