RE: New Bridges Under Construction

Ron,What is the name of that rusted shut swing bridge just south of Bascule? It is right at the end of Emerson Dr., so I thought maybe it was "The Emerson" brige?? Would you happen to have that one done??Just took some pics today, as well as the Bascule area and the CSX entrance to the yard. Went looking for the south corner then. Not a healthy neighborhood around there, according to the cop that wondered why I was going slow and taking pics. Also went up to the roof of Art Sample to take some pics of what is left behind them. Not a pretty sight.Martyn T. Griffin

RE: New Bridges Under Construction

That rusty bridge is the old Grand Trunk swing span. I will model that soon as I have several detailed photos of it. I also have photos of Potter St. station before the fire damaged it.I should have warned you that most of Saginaw is now a dying poverty stricken area that has got a bad reputation for gangs, drugs, dog fighting, and drive by shootings. (Actually, the safest area of town is around Potter St. and the CSX yard where you were taking pictures. There is nothing of value left there to steal.) Where are the Saginaw police when they are really needed? Busy harassing out of towners instead of getting the criminals off the streets. The liberal judges keep slapping their hands instead of throwing the book at them. Example, teen brings handgun to school. It goes off injuring another student. His punishment, probation. As most any railfan knows, most major yards are located in some of the most povery ridden areas of town. Best not to go there alone or after dark.Who did you sweet talk at my former employer to get up on the roof to photograph what is left of the old yard? The kit SRVBrdg6.zip is ready for upload. It contains the Tittabawassee River crossing bridge you will need for the track to Brekenridge. Note, the track to St.Charles is no longer there.SRV Ron

RE: Emerson

Been some changes made to the approaches since I photographed them several years ago. Looks like unfinished walkways started. The ties are there, just no deck or hand railings. Probably a good thing, some kids were killed on that bridge by a train a few years back.SRV Ron

RE: Emerson

Found some pics that are nearly impossible to take today. This shows the unlocking machinery and capstans on the bridge. They were designed to be turned by hand if necessary. Not uncommon to grab a bunch of teens from the nearby Arthur Hill Tech in the 30s to turn the bridge for a freighter.SRV Ron

Art Sample

This is what it looks like now behind Art Sample. The cop waved me down just as I passed the church going down 1st street. Glad that he did! After all the money I have spend at A.S., its the least they could do. Picked just after 12 on Sunday while it was slow, and asked the first guy I found in there. He took me up the elevator to 4th floor then up the steps to the top. Couldn't have been more helpfull or pleasant about it.Martyn T. Griffin

RE: Art Sample

New roof on the back.A little story about the pond to the East. Several years ago late fall, some vandels smashed a valve on a tank car full of molassas. The RR pushed the mess into the pond. No one thought about it until it started to fermet in the hot sun that Summer. Nothing was done about it until the wind pushed the smell over to the big shots in the bank building. The resulting cleanup was quick and complete. The pictures will be helpful. Check your e-mail for a bascule patch and srvbrdg6.zip which has the Tittabawassee River bridge.SRV Ron

RE: New Bridges Under Construction

wait a min, twin bascule bridge, CNJ Trainmaster & commuter coaches, and a highway next to it. can i venture to guess that that is the CNJ Chemical Coast crossing the Rahway River next to the NJ Turnpike? it looks a lot like that though i might be wrong, but id sure like to find out...

CURRENT CNJ ROUTES:
Newark & New Jersey
CNJ Southern Sub-Division
Lehigh Valley
Any others? Tell me about them!

RE: New Bridges Under Construction

That's what it is. It's the Elizabeth River crossing on the Chemical Coast (nee Elizabethport and Perth Amboy branch.) The truss swing bridge in the distance is just stored there while I installed the rolling bascule.I'd like to thank Ron again for such a wonderful set of bridges. Here's that commuter coming off the Sound Shore Branch at the WY home signal bound for Broad St, Newark.Hank
