I have an interesting problem. In the picture with a diesel, you will see a tall turf pillar that should not be there. The second picture, from an another angle, is of the same area where the turf pillar appears, but was taken in the RE. No pillar!
Originally, there was a tunnel where the pillar was which I removed and replaced with regular track. I used a piece of track to remove the pillar each time it popped up. Now it only appears in the sim. Even with terrain error set to the max, the pillar appears within the sim, but not in the editor. Should I completely replace the tile with a tile that is newly produced and demmed or do I redem the old tile? All I can say is , go figure. Comments on how to deal with issue would be appreciated.

RE: Dealing with an unwanted pillar of terrain.

Even if it doesn't appear in RE, use the sim to move about and get the exact lat/long extents (or at least a part of it).In RE, move over to that spot, with the camera pointing down and about 50-100 feet up, press W to see wire frame and check if any of the polys are distorted in that area. If they are (or even if they ain't), select a small area in front and right click to check the current avaerage height. Then repeat this in the 'affected' area and see if the ave height is measureably different, and adjust it accordingly. When all done, remove wire frame mode, go back to the ground, select the existing track sections and press Y for each in that area. Then save the changes and try the sim.Oh, and before you start, take a full backup!!!Martyn T. Griffin

RE: Dealing with an unwanted pillar of terrain.

You need to work to narrow this down.-Does it appear all the time, or just a fleeting glimpse and dissapears, or only appears when viewed from a certain angle?- can you see the pillar from both sides?- Are you using Distant Mountains? If so does it appear with that option off?Regardless of the answers, the first thing I'd do is delete all the terrain buffers and let the sim rebuild them (all the _e.raw and _n.raw files).

RE: Dealing with an unwanted pillar of terrain.

John, thanks for your suggestions. The Pillar of turf is right at the intersection of four tiles. When I approach it and go by it without getting out of its sight, it remains. If I go farther down the line and get out of its sight, and go up and down the line in front of it or out of its sight, the pillar disappears. I am thinking of redemming the tiles in the order that does the least damage to my scenery. I was able to get the pillar to reappear in my RE by deleting the terrain buffers at your suggestion. Any additional suggestions?

RE: Dealing with an unwanted pillar of terrain.

If you used an older version of DEMEX, you will sometimes get this kind of thing on a DEM boundary, which corresponds (usually) to a tile boundary as well. What has been suggested, about manually fixing the problem is the only way that I know of, but it can be tedious. If you are using DEMEX or something like that, I would suggest you contact JohnCS (look for threads of him) and get a registered version of his latest toy. It works very very well, and handled boundaries very well in my rendition of the Clinchfield. Right at a critical point on the loops (near Avery, NC), there was a quad boundary coinciding with a tile boundary. With earlier version, I had the Grand Canyon surrounded by the Himalayas at this point, but with the newest release I have (Jan. or Feb.) it was fixed great.Another problem that occurs in areas like you show, where you have steep slopes along a valley or river, is that when you use the "y" key to lower terrain under the track, the effect is to create a gulley or cut that is correct on the uphill side, but should be just a shelf or precipice on the downhill side. There are two ways to correct this. You can set another piece of track, preferably a 3 or 4 track piece at the same level as your desired track and move this around, touching the "y" key, until the downhill side is smoothed, or you can hand-sculpt it, using wireframe and looking for distorted frames. Lots of luck - this toy is fun - and addictive. Anybody want to start a 12-step program for train-simmers.J. H. Sullivan, P.E. (retired)
