I was just wondering where people are getting their route profile data from nowdays. I remember last year you could just pull it right off most companies web sites and go from there, but since 9/11 that info now seems to have dissapeared. Now it seems you're luck if BNSF or anyone else acurately show where the track is, let alone where the signals, swithces, mileposts, and speed limits are.
Cheers,
James.

RE: Profile Data

I expect most people just write a litter to the Chief Engineer of the company they are interested in, and ask for it. However, since 9-11, most railroads are more than a little paranoic about such things. Truth is though, damaging a switch or signal would not be hard to repair as compared to a tunnel or major bridge, and most of those are so obvious in Terraserver and other places, that a potential threat can just go there and get the coordinates.J. RE: Profile Data

By chance, I was in a hiking store to purchase a couple of the USGS topo maps to research the route I was building. I couldn't find the map I wanted when the clerk mentioned that she had some maps on CD for $100.
Although I didn't really want to pay that much I looked at the CD and it was all the maps for Missouri, in all scales. I plunked down the cash and took it home. It was while I was using route planning that I stumbled on the best part. Once I marked off the track on the map using their GPS route markers, I found that it could be exported to a cvs file. A quick edit in Excel and I was able to generate a matching mkr file for TS.
This allows me to keep the map open and directly matches my route markers with the points on the map. The map data file also includes all elevations and will draw a profile of the route (it was ment for hikers and bikers).
