Bill… Fish – image 1Could it possibly be....Bill… Fish – image 2It is ....Mahi....My modeling skills are slow growing. This is basically a flat fish, though you can see both sides of him, just not from top or bottom. I haven't tested the animation yet. Laying and deleting track underwater is not something I relish doing. I'm protective about SV ~laugh~My skills are improving ~chuckle~ I did manage to get a gate done. It's here in Marias Pass. With any luck this time next year, I'll have all the objects modeled

RE: Bill........ Fish........

Grabbing my fishing pole and worms. Wow! DR, having a fish in there gives the impression of being under water better than anything I have seen. Now I am more optimistic and excited about an undersea area. Also striking in your second screen shot is that the water surface looks great from underneath. My first thought, how did DarkestRose do that? Then I realized you are under the surface, but above the bottom layer of water (waterbot.ace). Great looking gate also. Thanks for working on the fish DR. A bunch of them under water would really look great.Bill Burnett

RE: Bill........ Fish........

I'll be doing a number of them, some of them more tropical in appearance such as Angel Fish and Fighting Fish. And a few schools of fish. These are easy to do and gives me a break from working on complex models. I'll probably have more for you in a few days to try out.

Wow! Schools of fish! Sounds like I can have a wish list. How about: Sharks, a submarine, seaweed, whale, porpoise, catfish, etc. Bill Burnett

RE: Bill........ Fish........

LMAO, now you got me in stitches! Thanks, Bill, I needed that!
Sharra, I think your idea of the translucent objects might work great for this, only blue/green instead of purple, and move the patterns away from the edges a little. Using a bunch of those like building blocks, placing them 10 to 20 meters away from the tracks and building an oversize "tunnel" out of them would create just the right illusion of actually being underwater. The other thing we might try is making waterbot.ace translucent instead of opaque, see what that does to the appearance up top.Bill… Fish – image 6
Hmmm, nope. Needs to be a lot more transparent than that.Bill… Fish – image 7
Topside looks about the same. I'll have to work on it, darken the alpha channel or something.

Nope. Couldn't get it transparent from underneath, I even tried copying watertop.ace to overwrite watermid.ace and waterbot.ace, with all 3 files the same I get this:Bill… Fish – image 8But from underneath the bottom is still opaque:Bill… Fish – image 9
Odd thing, but since this isn't really supposed to paint on the bottom side, I suppose it isn't picking up the alpha channel from underneath. Oh, well, Her Royal Thorniness still has the best solutions, IMAO.

RE: Bill........ Fish........

Water is good at hiding sharp edges of terrain textures. I use things like bridges to separate terrain textures like custom sand from rock because custom terrain textures don't have transition textures. Seems to me that with transparent water, the sharp line between rock and sand would show and look terrible. Screenshots below show terrain transitions hidden by water.Bill BurnettBill… Fish – image 12Bill… Fish – image 13

Yeah, funny thing is it depends on the depth. I was just looking at it again, it appears that waterbot is opaque anyway, even with the alpha channel, but that AWE water has the layers seperated more than the default. What I'm seeing now, with watertop.ace copied to all 3 files (you want to try this, copy \Enviles\Textures\Watertop.ace to another folder, rename it watermid.ace, then copy it back in overwriting the one that's in there. Go back to the other folder, rename the same file again to waterbot.ace, copy it back in so that all 3 files are the same texture & transparency), is the watermid dissappearing almost entirely, amd waterbot.ace is opaque in spite of the alpha channel. So it's really only transparent, or semi-transparent, down to a certain depth. Probably could fiddle around with this type of thing more for cool effects.

RE: Bill........ Fish........

Ron Spalding did a lot of testing and adjusting of my watermid and waterbot levels. I think he was trying to create more realism. He made some animated dolphins that he wanted to show up swimming just under the surface.DR sent me a new waterbot.ace that I am experimenting with. It looks great from underneath, but may be causing some problems from the top view.Bill Burnett
