Jul-16-01, 01:07 PM (EST) "Combined Object Reference - Update" I'm working like mad to complete documenting the combined objects list for everyone, but I keep finding new objects that had missing shape description files (SD) so the list keeps growing.I posted a combined signals and signal scripts file that works, but last night I found additional signals to include. Here's a quick look at the items list I have created:Crossings
---------
I found several crossing objects that were incomplete and made them functional. They display "orange boxes" when dropped on a road / track intersection. These 13 shapes are functional:US2CrossingSign
US2Crossing
US2CrossingSing (Single track)
US2CrossingX1 (Single track)
US2CrossingX2 (Double track)
US2CrossingX3 (Triple track)
US2CrossingX4) (Quad track)
US2Crossx1Nbar
US2Crossx2Nbar
Crossing_Sign01
Crossing_Sign02
UKCrossGate
JP1CarCrossing
Vegetation
----------
FORESTS.DAT contains 30 tree-group types for forestsSignals
-------
SIGCFG.DAT and linked SIGSCR.DAT combined for MS shipping routes, but stil must merge many more items into the scripts.
Completed merging and testing these 16 signal shapes:Amtrak Gantry Signal Head
BNSF Interlocking gantry mount
BNSF Interval gantry mount
BNSF Interval
BNSF Interlocking
BNSF Interlocking (2 light second head)
OBB Semaphore Signal (Home + Distance)
OBB Semaphore Signal (Distance)
OBB Semeahore Signal (Home)
Japan 3 Light Signal (Separate Head)
Japan 3 Light Signal (Right)
Japan 3 Light Signal (Left)
Japan 4 Light Signal (Right)
Japan 4 Light Signal (Left)
UK Semaphore Signal (Home)
UK Semaphore Signal (Dist)It looks like there are at least 14 more signal types to add, so we'll have 30 signal types shortly.
Transfers / Textures
--------------------
There are 170 textures / transfers in the TerrTex folderSounds
------
TTYPE.DAT - Now contains 30 track sound regions.
SSOURCE.DAT - Now contains 126 sound samplesVehicles
--------
CARSPAWN.DAT - Now contains 20 vehicles of the 30 that exist in the game.US2CAR2.S and US2CAR2.ACE exist. Create a US2CAR2.SD file and you get a red American automobile.General "REF" document
---------------------
The file size is about 200 Kb and it lists over 1,500 Objects that are not duplicated in the external files (FORESTS, SIGNALS, CARS, etc)
I'll keep you posted.Jim Steven, MCSE

There may be a way to use what I have now, although it's incomplete. The issue is assembling the list of shape, shape description and textures so they can be duplicated on other people's systems.I've created many SD files and no longer recall which ones they were, so I plan to use WinDiff on a clean install to find the sources.I can at least supply the FORESTS.DAT, an updated SIGCFG.DAT and SIGSCR.DAT with 15 signal types and 28 signal shapes, SPEEDPOST.DAT with the five available sign sets, CARSPAWN.DAT with 20 cars, TTYPE.DAT with 30 sounds, SSOURCE.DAT with 125 sounds and the work-in-progress "REF" document.I'll try doing this Tuesday by 2:00 PM Pacific Time USA

Jul-17-01, 10:32 AM (EST) 6. "RE: Combined Object Reference - Update" Great work. I am so glad you are updating these files to include everything. I love the previous work you have done and have been putting it to use in my routes. Take your time in getting everything into these files. One suggestion I have though is to put all of your files into one zip so we can get them all in one download. That might make things easier for us to get the files, plus I am sure we will be using all of them in our routes Again, great work and thanks for taking the time to give us complete files for designing our routes. Jul-17-01, 11:11 AM (EST) 7. "RE: Combined Object Reference - Update" It really will be very beneficial too when you are all done. What I am thinking is when we are ready to upload routes, we won't have to include the files in textues, shapes and whatever since we could use your fix as a standard for what should be in the files. But I don't know how we're going to incorporate the new buildings I see folks working on with this idea. I guess they could include the buildings in with the upload but would make for larger uploads. Gosh this is puzzling! Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jul-17-01, 09:06 PM (EST) 9. "RE: Combined Object Reference - Update" EVERYONE ALREADY HAS A COMBO REF FILE !!!
Just F.Y.I. just in case you did not know, there is already a combined ref file when you install MSTS, located in the GLOBAL directory, called objects.ref...you can copy it into your template folder and rename it template.ref, and all your new routes will have the new ref file.....The same goes with signals.cfg/dat and tsection.dat..and also, you can copy all your shapes/textures/terrtex into the corresponding template folder and it saves you a lot of needless copying.... Apparently, you're a little behind in your reading here on the forum. Everyone is well aware there is a file called combo.ref and the others you mention. What the frequent lurkers here know though, is that the combo file you mention DOES NOT include ALL of the objects to be found in the sim. You need to also read up on the signal situation....not all the signals from all sections of the world are in that signal file (someone has merged all the USA sigs together in a download here though which should help.) Likewise, the thread regarding the use of the template folder was/is about 2 weeks old here too. That came from Jim who's a senior programmer at MS.

Jul-18-01, 11:24 AM (EST) 13. "RE: Combined Object Reference - Update" The combo.ref file is a user uploaded file....the objects.ref file is a MS provided file that contains more data than the uploaded combo.ref....it even incudes all the stations, of which the combo ref didn't...just take a look yourself and you'll see.... Jul-18-01, 11:33 AM (EST) 14. "RE: Combined Object Reference - Update" I think you are both right. The combine.ref at 214k is better than the default at 4k in the template directory. The object.ref at 423k in the gobal directory has more than the combine.ref. But they both don't have everything and that is what Jim is working on.David Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jul-18-01, 00:07 AM (EST) 11. "RE: Combined Object Reference - Update" That file has been confirmed as "out of date". There are missing Shape Description files, renamed "ACE" items and even some missing textures. You also will not find any singnal scripting in that file or the 125 sound files that you can use in each route. That file isn't used by the software either. The user groups are working hard to get something together, and I've been trying to see if we can get Product Management to approve including it in the 1.1 patch scheduled in two months.

Jul-18-01, 01:09 PM (EST) 17. "RE: Combined Object Reference - Update" As I wrote in other message boards, I think that for an update, we will have to wait that it is released at least in all countries. In France, it will be released only on 22nd August. I think they will wait for the reaction of everyone before doing any patch, which has to work in every country. So I did not expect any patch before November/December. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jul-18-01, 02:40 PM (EST) 18. "RE: Combined Object Reference - Update" Jim,
This may be way of topic, but I notice by your job description in you signiature block that while you work at Microsoft you have nothing to do with the development of Train Sim but rather Windows. If so, how come you are posting so much information on this forum, and we haven't heard "boo" out of the boys who developed the game? Allthough we appreciate your work.James.P.S. Since you work for MS in the Windows department, nice job on XP so far. I have been running the beta for about three weeks no and so far it's looking pretty good. Jul-19-01, 01:35 PM (EST) 20. "RE: Combined Object Reference - Update" MS has offices here in the San Franscisco area and I work in driver and application development.I started working with Windows in 1984 (Yes, we WERE a year ahead of Apple, but didn't ship until 1985)My most recent projects involve what we call "MP for XP" - the DVD player interface in the Windows Media Player and those high-compression streams with better than HDTV quality images (65k to 800 kB)The TrainSim interest is due to my interests in both Model Railroading and involvement during the early 1980's with a project for the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District that created the computer-controlled public train system train locator, speed monitor.I've always enjoyed trains. My two favorite steamers are the Shay (love the tight turns it has) and the opposite extreme - a Berkshire.I think the Shay interest started in 1965 when I saw the train on an American TV program called "Petticoat Junction".Southern Pacfic Daylight trains are nice diesels and for electric, I have no specific favorite.Jim Steven, MCSE

There's a book dedicated to the Berkshire, Berkshires Of The Nickel Plate Road by Kevin Holland TLC Publishing Inc. Be great to see one running around in MSTS btw.
