After having no luck (or bad luck) with previous versions of Route Riter, I thought perhaps I'd give it yet another try with the version 2.7 released in the past couple days.Got the program set up and started to use it. I followed the instructions explicitly (I printed themout before doing anything so I would have a printed reference in front of me.) 1. Did the route selection and confirmation. OK 2. Did the "Make Reasd/Write". OK 3. Did the "Get .S Files". OK 4. Did the "Find .ACE/.SMS" OK 5. Pressed "Kill Unused Files". NOT OK. The "wait" cursor comes up and stays there, and the program seemingly did nothing. I went out for lunch, came back two horus later and the "wait" cursor was still there. Program seemingly doing nothing still.I said "the hell with it" and killed the program, and reinstalled the route from thebackup CD I made.My question is.... How long does this Route Riter "Kill Unused Files" thing supposed to take? All day? All week? Thanks for any help you can pass along!
LAST EDITED ON Jun-22-02 AT 12:25 PM (EDT)I get an hourglass that doesn't ever go away. I just wait 5 minutes or so, until I am sure the process is complete, and then use the hourglass as a pointer to click the next step. Route-Riter has then produced GREAT results.Bill Burnett
Takes less than 90 seconds here and finishes the process everytime. I have also been using the new version to compress the .w , .ace and .shape files ,with no problems.regards, O.G.
How much memory do you have, a user with 128 meg RAM had this problem on the longer routes. On my own machines the Kill Unused Files finishes in about 90 secs on an XP machine and 2 mins on a Win 98SE machine. Both finish correctly on both machines. If the Kill option hangs, then it looks like an error has occurred, can you please advise which route you were processing?2. Note that there is normally no need to use the 'Make Read/Write' option, this is only necessary if the route includes Read-Only files - the LR-Za route on this server is one of these. Thanks, Mike.
Thanks for the reply, Mike -- and others.I have an XP machine, 256MB RAM. tried the program on both the Seaview 2 and the Bodiddly Routes. Same results. I always save a route onto a CD-ROm when load it up and test it, so it's no big deal if something gets screwed by using the Route Riter; Ijust reload from teh CD if such happens.
Sorry you are having this problem, I have had no difficulties compressing Bodiddly or Seaview2 (actually there is not much to be gained by compressing Seaview2 as Bill used Route-Riter to prepare the route in the first place!!).I would like to get to the bottom of the problem with the Kill Unused option, but it is difficult when it works on most machines and one or two report that it does not work on their machine. The wonders of computers Mike.
Thanks again, Mike!I'll try it on another route that I have backed up on CD and advise if any situatiions develop.I agree with your comment about computers...funny thing is, I bought this rig in November. My wife's boss bought her the same exact computer for her desk (the serial numbers are within 20 of each other...)-- and we both put Word Perfect 9.0 on the computers. Yet about 1 out of 4 times I click on WP9 to start it, it locks up and have to exit and restart WP. Wife hasn't had the problem on her computer at work.
Mike and Shoskins,I do not agree with your assumption that Route-Riter is not working on Shoskin's machine. Shoskins said "5. Pressed "Kill Unused Files". NOT OK. The "wait" cursor comes up and stays there, and the program seemingly did nothing." Route-Riter works on my machine, but after clicking "Kill Unused Files", I also get the wait cursor that never goes away. R-R is seemingly doing nothing. However, R-R is working even though the wait cursor remains, the unused files were killed as they should be.Bill Burnett
