At last the trackwork is complete. The CSX line from Philadelphia to Washington totals 128 mainline miles. Now the question;
Does anyone know how the miles are marked on this CSX division?I have plotted, starting at Philadelphia the locations where the mileposts will be placed but I don't know what numbers to put on the posts. If the mile marking gets too complicated or no one knows for sure I will simply make one end of the line start at mile zero and the other end mile 128.As far as the NEC Amtrak part of the route I do have extensive mile post information so no help is needed there.I'm not sure who it was in this forum that suggested placing a station platform object at one end of the route and then run an activity from the other end while watching the 'Next Station' display (F10) miles to station and hit the escape key every mile and record the latitude/longditude coordinates. This worked like a charm. Thanks to whoever this was that suggested this. Much easier than 'flying' the route in the editor with a stopwatch.Vince Cockeram

RE: NECv4 Mile Post Question for CSX division.

Hey Vince, congratulations on completing the trackwork. That is really great news, it sounds like the route is really progressing quickly now. I don't know much about the CSX freight line though, so I can't really help you with numbering the mileposts. Anyway, I want to say good luck with the route and keep up the great work you are doing. We are all patiently awaiting the release of this route for MSTS.

RE: NECv4 Mile Post Question for CSX division.

The mileposts on the former B&O start at "CP-Park", where the B&O essentially dead-ended into Conrail. If you follow the tracks on the east side of the river, opposite 30th st. station, northward, and through the tunnel, mile "0" will be approximately at the north end of the tunnel. However, I don't think the mileposts on the CSX Philadelphia Sub. go higher than about 90. It ends at Baltimore.J. H. Sullivan, P.E. (retired from CSX)

<<snip>>>J. H. Sullivan, P.E. (retired from CSX) Thanks much Mr. Sullivan, that will fit perfectly in with what I am doing. I modeled the CSX Philadelphia Sub from a point about opposite the 30th St. station on the east bank of the Schuylkill River heading south along the bank of the river and then up and over the NEC mainline. I see in my SPV Railroad Atlas that CP Park is just two miles north of this point which means the first milepost will be "2". Just dandy!! ....and the route comes out to about 90 miles to Baltimore also...another stroke of good luck. The gentelman who is doing the NEC north extension will be able to easily hook up here and take the CSX up to CP Park where it joins the Amtrak mainline. Do you know how the miles are marked off on the Capitol Sub? I have joined the Philadelphia Sub with the Capitol Sub through the Howard Street tunnel and Baileys just a bit south of Baltimore at the HB tower. The reason I need all this milepost info is because according to my track atlas both of these subs go through a bunch of neat little towns along their route and I want to place the towns with their probable small sidings as close as possible.
I suppose I am going to have to take artistic licence here and guess where sidings join the main as the track atlas does not show them...oh well...dont beat me up if I attach a siding where none is on the real divisions....Ummm, you wouldn't happen to have that info would you? This project is getting close to release thanks to the good folks on this forum. I could not have accomplished what has been done without you.
Due to the limitations in the hard route code the CSX divisions will have to be electrified via overhead catenary because the parallel NEC is electrified. Just say the US Congress appropriated big bucks to do this:) I still have signaling and scenery to install but it's getting done. I have requested a member of this forum to cook up signal config files so prototypical signals will be used on both the NEC and the CSX divisions. Keeping it as simple as possible only one custom object is presently in use on the route. I may have to add a ship or two for the Baltimore Harbor area but like I said, as few as possible. I want to keep the download size as small as possible so users with 56k modems will be able to use it. It will be a self installer, no zip files. Last time (April) I tested the installer it was 18.5Mb. Is this a reasonable size for 56k users? If not, I can probably split the installer and have a two part download. What say you folks?Back to pounding spikes.Regards,

This sounds great!
as far as the size , when I was on a modem , i grabbed bigger stuff , so I wouldn't have a problem.not sure how Nels would feel about two seperate installs?
one split , one not?
that may be worth exploring.....
good luck on the route!Make a Mess!!

RE: NECv4 Mile Post Question for CSX division.

Steven Miller has a wonderful site that has all the division/subdivison listings with mile markers. On the site, He says that all the listings come from the CSX timetables from April of 2000. If nothing else, that can give you an idea of where things are.http://www.trainweb.org/csxtimetables/Scott Riley

RE: NECv4 Mile Post Question for CSX division.

Keep up the good work. I was adding to the MSTS original and was about to build track from Bayview to the Howard St. Tunnel. I guess I will wait for your release. I experimented with building track in one of the subdivisions in Baltimore. Here are some pics.NECv4 Mile Post Question for CSX division – image 3

I'm psyched that people are working on Baltimore stuff! From the screens, it looks like you're modeling Consolidated Coal in Locust Point! That looks like the big loop just east of the Ft. McHenry Tunnel, and it looks like I-95 (just a section) over the beginning of the loop Excellent work!

RE: NECv4 Mile Post Question for CSX division.

Vince:
I hate to be a wet blanket, BUT the CSX does not join AMTRACK at CP Park. It Joins up at park jct with CONRAIL.Amtrack NEC main line does cross over the Conrail tracks, on a Viaduct,at 34th street about 200 yards East of Pack Jct.

I use to work on Conrail and went though that tunnel many times,on the Head End or in the Hack, before they started using FRED'S.CondMike

It Joins up at park jct with CONRAIL.You're not being a wet blanket Mike and I appreciate the info.My SPV track atlas shows a connection from the southbound Conrail line to the northbound Amtrak line just a bit south of CP Park. No wet blanket though because I am not modeling that area in the NECv4 route. My track (CSX) starts 2 miles south of CP Park along the river bank across from the 30th street station. The NEC extension will model the area around CP Park and will be an add on to the NECv4.NECv4 progress:
All original gantrys have been removed from the route and replaced with the light weight single pole gantrys. The big heavy bridge gantrys will be used for signal bridges only. I observed this practice in the NEC cab ride video. I am presently installing scenery working northbound along the CSX capitol division at present, about halfway between Washington and Baltimore. +++I need help with signals+++
Hank, are you out there? I need a combined signal script for NEC color position light, PPlDwarf and CSX signals. I already have the script you did for me combining the color position light and the dwarf signals so the CSX signals need to be added to that. Please help!! I am a total dummy when it comes to signal files. I have downloaded all your signal files and tried without success to combine them, crashing the route every time I try.Regards,

RE: NECv4 Mile Post Question for CSX division.

Vince:
Your right there is a track coming from "Belmont",Away from the river, that was number 2 on the old Reading Railroad. This track runs up the hill, where 29th street was, right after the amtrak Viaduct, it then connects at old engleside yard with the "0" track.Somehow Conrail bought or got the "0" track from Amtrak. all the way to Frankford Jct.The only connection now with Amtrak is; a trailing point crossover, from Amtrak to the "0" at North Philadelphia Interlocking East of the Station. And a crossover at Frankford Jct Interlocking on the Atlantic City Br. just west of old Frankford Jct Station, right at Castor Ave. underpass. If I remember right the 0 track is now called the Connection Track.Like I said there was No way to get from the CSX to Amtrack without running around your train at Belmont.Hope this helps. Give a shout if you need info about the Philadelphia area I may know about it.Cond Mike
