Jun-01-02, 02:02 AM (EDT) "NECv4 Progress Report 05-31-02" Greetings,
Almost all trackwork is complete. I am presently working in the Washington DC area, installing the Ivy City and Eckington yards.
Below is a view in the activity editor map window of the Washington DC area. This is where the CSX Capitol Division terminates.
After I finish trackwork here I have to move my gang north to Wilmington and lay the track for the Wilmington by-pass and the Edgmoore Yard. Here is another photo of heavy eguipment rolling south over the Thomas Viaduct with a 183 liquid chemical cars.
As soon as all trackwork is complete then road installation starts, after that comes scenery, buildings streetlamps and gantrys. Last will be track objects like mileposts, signals crossing gates ect.
I am making steady, well, somwhat steady progress. Every once in a while for no apparent reason the route editor hic-ups and corrupts a world file. Usually happens when laying track across a tile boundry. Been saving after every track placement. Problem is everything looks normal as I continue on pounding spikes. The only way I find out there is a problem is when I do a track database rebuild. Then I find a blue pole where two sections of track that were joined. Then it takes me a day or so to straighten it out, involving many TDB rebuilds, reboots, deleting and adding track and editing the faulty world file...not fun at all. Regards,
Vince Cockeram

Jun-01-02, 01:02 PM (EDT) 4. "RE: NECv4 Progress Report 05-31-02" Good morning to all,
I just had a look at Vinny's update message and the replys so far and I wanted to quickly add my 2 cents to some very favorable and enthusiastic responses.
Since vince started "updating" Bill Knowles version, his work has become an enormous task, doubling the amount of existing trackwork and in essence "creating" a new route with the addition of the CSX freight line from Washington DC to Philadelphia. But as we delved farther into the preliminaries, there was really no other way to go. We had both agreed after buying and viewing several videos of the NEC in that area and the purchase of a track atlas and Vin finding a track plan for the area online, that a complete re-working HAD to be done. Once you pull the heads, you might as well rebuild it right!
This has become Vin's job! He has put in at least 8 hour days and at least 5 days a week.
I'm very proud of him and his accomplishment so far. His attention to detail, his enthusiasm and doggedness through so many trials and tribulations that only a route editor can truely understand. (I'm not one of them. An activity designer).
The wait is going to be worth it! With his additions I really think this will be the premier "real" route going in the sim for both freight and passenger service.
KUJU should have him at one of their monitors!
Regards to all,
Denny

Jun-01-02, 09:42 PM (EDT) 7. "RE: NECv4 Progress Report 05-31-02" The NS Port Road branch is in as far as the tile boundry on the default NEC. Thats as far as I could take it without adding tiles and I am not adding any tiles to the route to keep it as simple as possible.
Tell ya what, why dont you plan on adding on the line after I finish the NEC. That would be a nice addition.Vince

Jun-03-02, 04:51 PM (EDT) 12. "RE: NECv4 Progress Report 05-31-02" Two words; Holy .... Okay, make that one word, and I'll keep the other to myself. ;) Man, this thing looks immense! I've been so hard at work tidying up Bill K's NEC2.0 and am almost finished (but am such a perfectionist, I'll never be! ;) ) What about night driving on this new version? I was always dismayed at how everything looked like a 'virtual ghost town' at night on the NEC? Keep up the good work! Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

I have to strike a balance between the number of scenery objects and frame rates. The more scenery objects the sim has to display the greater the hit on frame rates.
Back to pounding spikes.Regards,
