Jun-03-02, 09:29 AM (EDT) 3. "RE: Pennsy Main Stem - Harrisburg to Tyrone" I know the PRR line is being built between Harrisburg and Pittsburgh, and from Harrisburg to Parkesburgh. As soon as the NEC v.4 is completed I will be extending the NEC extension to Parkesburgh in order to tie the NEC v4 into this route. I hope that this helps and answers your question. Jun-03-02, 10:03 AM (EDT) 4. "RE: Pennsy Main Stem - Harrisburg to Tyrone" I know the DEM's were pulled down back in March but I don't know if anything else was done.I have a set of DEMs and DLGs for this section of the route. I'm trying to work on the Rockville bridge (it shares arch "modules" with some 30th Street bridges) just for fun.I want to model some of the trackage along the Juniata's for the L&A (double track like the Pennsy before 1870) so I will have to make markers and scenery anyway. I like the way it hugs the river banks. There is also the matter of those full circle roundhouses used at Altoona. My little 4-4-0's need lots of maintenance.Reminds me...Has anybody modeled fuel consumption along a route? Those little steamers were hungry for wood and water in the early days and stops were frequent. Every ten or twenty miles doesn't seem too unreasonable. Any thoughts on this?Sometimes the possiblities of MSTS are overwhelming. So much railroad, so little time.Frank Musick

Jun-03-02, 12:16 PM (EDT) 6. "RE: Pennsy Main Stem - Harrisburg to Tyrone" So it's okay if I create some scenery from Harrisburg to Tyrone? How do these cooperative efforts work? If you have the track laid can I work on the scenery and we merge the thing?Let me finish Rockville so we can see if it looks any good before I waste everybody's time. I'm not sure if I can match the quality of the other stuff I'm seeing yet.Frank Musick

Jun-03-02, 04:51 PM (EDT) 8. "RE: Pennsy Main Stem - Harrisburg to Tyrone" Cool,Gives me a spot to focus on...I've dug up more info on Rockville like photos and such (even those famous PRR paintings by good old what's his name). All I have to do now is creat an arch that textures properly. I'm hoping to use the boolean operation on GMAX. When I use the template/extrude in TSM only the arch on one side textures correctly. Not that I'm blaming TSM...It's the user that could use an upgrade.
By the shores of Susquehanna
sits the little train sim modeler...
Wishing he could see the marker
that tells him where the bridge is over.I'm hoping I can model those odd islands in the Susquehanna. The little ones that show the folded grain of the mountains. I alway thought that was a neat indicator of the rivers power 'cause the mountain is "cross cut".I want to add a few more markers before I start. It's a long bridge and I want to at least get it straight if nothing else Frank Musick

Jun-04-02, 08:18 AM (EDT) 11. "RE: Pennsy Main Stem - Harrisburg to Tyrone" Someone raised a question in another thread. Since I only use the route builder to generate tiles based on coordinates from the DLG's will my stuff match? Can I send you the markers for Rockville so we can check?Frank Musick

Jun-03-02, 11:26 PM (EDT) 9. "RE: Pennsy Main Stem - Harrisburg to Tyrone" This is Jon. I would like to know if this route is going to go between Harrisburg,PA and Pittsburgh,PA because I have been going to altoona,pa for the last 10 years straight at least and love that area a lot just to see the former Conrail RR go through there and now NS. Also, when will this route be available for download so that I can run on this overdue route. Please reply back to me with thoughts on this. Thanks a lot. Jun-04-02, 08:15 AM (EDT) 10. "RE: Pennsy Main Stem - Harrisburg to Tyrone" I think track is layed from Harrisburg west. I'm not sure how far.Altoona is under development, I think. I know the Curve is operational all the way through Gallitzin, and there is someone building east from Pittsburg. There's pics around here somewhere of the T-1 taking the Horseshoe Curve. You'd have to ask The Meistro to get a full status. I'm just a lowly bridge builder .Frank Musick

Jun-04-02, 08:29 AM (EDT) 12. "RE: Pennsy Main Stem - Harrisburg to Tyrone" As far as I know it is going to be going between Harrisburg and Pittsburgh, it is a massive project though so it will most likely be some time before it is completed. From the screenshots posted of the curve in Altoona though it will be well worth the wait when it is over. I am planning on extending the NEC extension west to meet this route as well, so you can use the end of the one as a crew change point. The idea being when the one route ends, you can load your consist at the start of the other one and keep on going. This should allow you to run your trains between Pittsburgh and go as far east as Washington DC or New York City. Myself and Motley24Crue2 who is working with me on this project are waiting for the new NEC 4.0 to be released which will include the CSX freight line in order to ensure that our NEC Extension project will be compatible with the new route. When both of these projects are completed, it should make for some fun railroading in the area and for some really long activities to be run. Imagine going all the way from Pittsburgh to Washington DC It is coming, and from what I have seen of their section of the route in the area around the curve it will be well worth the wait. Hopefully I will get to drive past the Statue of Liberty in the middle of the Susquehanna River at Dauphin just above the Rockville Bridge soon Keep up the great work guys and we will all be looking forward to this route. Jun-04-02, 11:32 AM (EDT) 13. "RE: Pennsy Main Stem - Harrisburg to Tyrone" Ya know...it might be worth looking at what already exists. Although I'll be posting finished material from the curve to Pinecroft today or tomorrow, gents look at the following editor shots:

The three pics above are, though simplified, of the trackage over the Rockville Bridge sans bridge.A pic of Harrisburg:
Views of and toward Enola:
Rockville north towards Duncannon:
All the track has been laid between Harrisburg to Gallitzin. The track in Duncannon needs some work because one track is offset and needs adjusting. Frankly, I got bored working with the tdb and put off the problem. Why relay all the track. We kno we are in a great white void area and know all the problems involved. If Frank is so in love with doing Harrisburg, I'll gladly send him the route and he can add and polish the Duncannon Harrisburg area. He has my email address and we can make arrangements. You can see I have simplified the trackage. I make no apologies. I know how massive thisn project is and I think you gents do also. Sorry George, no statue of liberty yet though, if you look across the floating trackage of the Rockville Bridge, you can make out Dauphin in the distance. md Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-04-02, 04:37 PM (EDT) 15. "RE: Pennsy Main Stem - Harrisburg to Tyrone" Damn!
It's one thing to imagine it...Totally another to see it.Knowing the trouble I had with the wye at Gordon I think it must have been a royal pain setting up the bridge approaches. After the fiasco last night trying to run the straight section where the bridge goes. Aside from the issues with the additional markers that refused to show up, just getting the track to connect in a contiguous run was a battle. I am impressed and humbled (no joke) at what it must have taken to do all of this.I only hope the bridge does justice to all the hard work that's in those pictures. I felt better when I saw the "hill" just west of the Marysville end. At least I'm in the right neighborhood. I learning fast that "soft" modeling is more challenging than "hard" models. I think Model Railroader and the NMRA should take a good hard look at some of the stuff being produced here.Frank Musick

I can recognize the locations in that screen shot from driving up to Penn State on rt. 322. That is awesome, keep up the great work you have there and thanks for building the route. Jun-05-02, 05:15 PM (EDT) 17. "RE: Pennsy Main Stem - Harrisburg to Tyrone" LAST EDITED ON Jun-05-02 AT 05:17 PM (EDT)Mike,e-mail me two world files from your route.Tile -11083/14335 - Harrisburg Station.and the tile that holds the wye on the eastern end of the Rockville Bridge. I'll try to tie our two route together at one or the other of those tiles.
Frank, Go ahead on the bridge work as far as I'm concerned, but don't change any of the track configuration on the east end. If I can't get routes to match at Harrisburg I'm going to try and tie them together on the south leg of the wye at the east end of
Rockville Bridge. If that works, I'll try and prep a tile for the east end of my district for George to connect the Philly sub to. We need to get these connections made before we get too many objects into the world file.pennsyfan2

Jun-05-02, 09:04 PM (EDT) 19. "RE: Pennsy Main Stem - Harrisburg to Tyrone" Ok guys, I've more screen shoots from the Horseshoe Curve until the Bridge at Riggles Gap Run where one goes to Pinecroft.First two are the Broadway leaving the Curve and passing Lake Altoona:
Next shot is of Coburn, PA:
Next couple of shots show the Rose yards and the Bridge at 7th Street in Altoona:

Next couple of shots show the Altoona Juniata Yards and the 17th Street Bridge:
The last two shots are of the Riggles Gap Runa nad the Bridge over the tracks to Pincecroft:

A couple of comments. I apologize for Altoona. There is a roundhouse in the Rose yards that is not visible in the pictures.

Jun-06-02, 08:14 AM (EDT) 20. "RE: Pennsy Main Stem - Harrisburg to Tyrone" Beautiful!I got a ton more info on Rockville, including the news that it collapsed in 1997...Hadn't heard that, been here in Tennessee since about that time. I also pulled a bunch of the MOW drawings off the Pennsy sites. I was looking for bridge details and found whistle posts, division markers, signal bridges, etc...I want to model some of them. Does anybody know if are they already in the file library? Now if I can only figure out why the boolean subtraction doesn't work the way I need it to...Kitten, get off the keyboard!Ah! the challenges of railroad construction, nothing like it.Frank Musick

Jun-06-02, 08:57 AM (EDT) 21. "RE: Pennsy Main Stem - Harrisburg to Tyrone" LAST EDITED ON Jun-06-02 AT 08:59 AM (EDT)Pennsyfan2, when connecting the NEC Extension to Philly they will have to be two separate routes. What I was planning on doing was recreating the scenery at the end of your route where the two would join and having a slight overlap to give a feel of continuity. That way you could drive an engine to the end of my route and then switch engines and continue from that point using your route. The reason for this is that the NEC and the NEC Extension are electrified and your route is not. And unfortunately MSTS doesn't allow both electrified and non electrified track on the same route. At least as far as I know it doesn't. So what I will do is simply recreate the end of your route on my route to allow you to switch engines and continue. This seems to be the simplest way to join the routes. Of course if you have a better idea on how to do it then that is great too. Let me know what you think of this idea. Also I love the pics that you have there. Altoona is looking great. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-06-02, 09:13 AM (EDT) 22. "RE: Pennsy Main Stem - Harrisburg to Tyrone" I've been thinking about this electrified track issue. Is it possible to divide the route just like the Pennsylvania did?Run the electrification into Enola (I think that's where it stops) and somehow overlap the next route from there?Does this make sense? I'll bet it means a ton of rework for somebody...Is there any way to do it easily? Can the Electrified section be added to the Eastern part? Like the NEC extension out of 30th street to Bridesburg...Frank Musick

Jun-06-02, 10:49 AM (EDT) 23. "RE: Pennsy Main Stem - Harrisburg to Tyrone" Yep there will be two harrisburgs. One with lectrisity (bad spelling intended), one with out. There also are the Harrisburg yards, which I have in place. It sounds like bill may replace them.. who knows.. am at the other end... Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-06-02, 06:59 PM (EDT) 24. "RE: Pennsy Main Stem - Harrisburg to Tyrone" George,I did put in electrified route from Harrisburg to Parkesburg. The yards at the north end of Harrisburg coming in from Mike's route are not. Somehow we will have to take that into account at that end of my district. By making two similar yards one electrified, the other not. I wanted to be able to at least run electrics into the station(GG1's with passenger equipment) where they will be cutoff to locomtive service tracks.Of course having electrified the mainline will mean the Strasburg RR, the Quarryville branch and New Holland Branch will all have to follow suit though in actuality they never were.
But I'm only going to use them as sort of staging tracks hidden behind scenery or buildings after a short run from the mainline.Any way that's how I've approached my part of this route.pennsyfan2
