May-30-02, 09:39 PM (EDT) "Newbie alert! - Hello everyone!" Hello everyone. I work in the Rail industry (although i don't crank - no time, and sorry, no intrest!!!)
I firstly just like to thank the authors of the various Faqs that have been released on route creation. These have proven very helpful indeed and i'm now well on the way to creating my first fictional route.I have'nt really had the chance to read through the posts to see if my questions can be answered so sorry for the banel post...Anyway..1). I've created Rail over Road/Water bridges by creating the track over the section, then (obviously using the Numberpad or mouse) moving an imported bridge (say Japans Bluebridge) over the track and by trial and error fitting it to place.
Is this really how you have to do it? It's rather time consuming. It works, but i just wondered if there was an easy-way to do it. I read about turning the bridge into a terrain object but i can't (a least i don't understand why you'd have to!)2). Dynamic Track. Now before reading the MS Techdocs on point creation i was using Dynamic track to join routes to create points. Now... if i want to add a piece of track (from left to right only) track onto a set of pre-laid points, do i always have to press 'T' to see if the track fits, the press 't' again to work on it further if not? I don't use maths to do this as its far to complex for me to work out (and normally quicker with a mouse!)3). Once the route is completed i will give it away here, so how do i compress the route to a managable state and create an auto set-up program.4). Why do i get the Cannot find object error after a little usage? (normally when i'm zooming into an object-intense area). Provided i don't save after the error has occured, i assume the objects i've laid down previous to the error will stay where they are upon exiting out and re-loading. Of course, i would have normally saved before the error. But will this error keep rearing it's rather annoying head? Thanks for your time guys!

Some bridge objects default to having the roadway at ground level, others have the support legs on the ground and roadway up in the air, either way you have to fit it under the tracks. Easiest way is usually to place the tracks, then the bridge, then undercut the terrain under the bridge to make whatever it's supposed to be crossing over. Download Ratwin.zip from the file library utilities section, it helps for fine tuning rotation.
Y key, when track section is selected, raises the terrain under the track, or undercuts if the track is below ground.

H key sets a selected object to ground level
N key adjusts an object to the angle of the slope it's on.
~ key is an "undo" for the last time you hit Y, CTRL ~ will undo all terrain changes since the last save.
Select a bridge section, RIGHT click on it, and set the "terrain object" from the properties box that pops up. This makes the track going over it opaque so you can't see thru the ties & ballast.2.

That has a lot of info, but I think the one you want is "how to construct a passing siding" (without using dynamic track). Essentially you want to flip track with the T key when it doesn't fit the way you want, until it does fit.3. To import objects into the route, use this:
http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/User_files/3cb5f98e11a5a0f6.zipAnd when you're ready to package for distribution, ignore all my packaging instructions in the Stuffitpack readme, just download the new Route Riter from the file library utilities and follow the instructions in that.4. You're finding out how buggy the route editor is, the official motto of route developers is "Abandon hope All Ye Who Enter Here". I currently have 768 megs of RAM, if you have less than that the route editor eats memory so fast you have to save and exit (and sometimes reboot) to clear memory every 15 minutes, or use MaxMem or something. Even if you have a lot of RAM it's still necessary to save occasionally, especially before moving to another section. Otherwise the RE will remember SOME of the changes you made in that section, but not all, and screw the whole thing up.Now a question for you, could you translate "I don't crank" from Brit to Yank? We're kind of backward here in the colonies, I hadn't heard that one yet. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Let me just add something on #4. Make sure NOTHING IS SELECTED when you save. Objects have been known to disappear because of that and crashes also. Good Luck and look forward to seeing your routeHey Sniper, when's SeaView 2 going to be released?Message Areas - "Newbie alert! - Hello everyone!" – image 1

May-31-02, 11:39 AM (EDT) 3. "RE: Newbie alert! - Hello everyone!" Calr, Southern_Railway (Bill Burnett) did the Seaview2 route, not Sniper (but Sniper does alot of great things for us as well.) Anyway Bill is hoping to release the route in a week. He was nice enought to send me the beta and it is another fun route. The installation with rite-router was a breeze. Sorry, guys at work come up with all kinds of weird terminolgy...Goin' Crackin' = Trainspotting.Vera = Elderly person (load of Vera's joining the train-hence further delay!)Burst = Gutted (like when someone misses a train - in full view of everyone, and normally followed up with masses of laugher and finger pointing at poor sucker!)Stooooorm! = Going really fast (not used in the UK very much and less your lucky enough to be riding Empty Coaching Stock, current state of UK railway. Jus kiddin!).Normals = Everyday passengers.
Gen = Infomation. They're the only ones i can remember! Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

May-31-02, 08:54 PM (EDT) 6. "RE: Newbie alert! - Hello everyone!" Well if Cal Rasmussen can claim senile dementia at 57, I know I got it made (and probably have dementia as well). I'm 63.Newbie, which railroad do you work for. I retired last year with 34 years, 13 on the Southern, 21 on Chessie & CSX. Last 21 years was in the Engineering Dept. where I managed the computer aided design system. At Southern I was head of the track geometry measurement activities. There was (is) a bridge over the New River in Tennessee that stands 346 feet over the water - when we went over the darn thing at 50mph or so, I would much preferred to have been on final approach in the C-172 I used to fly as a hobby. What they have all said is true. Transfers really work your system over, so I only use them around tunnels. I do use a lot of dynamic track, and so far this has not been a problem.I suggest that you get a copy of maxmem, which you can download from several sites, and run it on your machine. It opens a little window in the systray with a line across it. As long as that line is green, you are okay, but if it turns orange, save, and wait a minute or two, and it will release the memory that RE is so famous for gobbling up.J. H. Sullivan, P.E. May-31-02, 09:05 PM (EDT) 7. "RE: Newbie alert! - Hello everyone!" LAST EDITED ON May-31-02 AT 09:21 PM (EDT)I'm from London and work as an assistant controller, controlling London's busiest section - Railtrack south Zone - The Region formally known as.....the Southern Reigion.
Without going into too much detail, it's my job to ensure trains are running okay, and any incidents (Fatalaties, train failures, Bomb alerts are dealt with, and trains are organsied so minimal delay is caused). I also deal with real-time train scheduling so records of additional trains are in are computer system (TRUST-used on some American railroads i think).
I'm into Sub/Urban rail mainly. My fictional urban route will reflect that!!
Shame that guy who did Chi-towns L2 never completed it - that was kinda inspirational as no urban routes have me completed in real detail. Here's hoping my route will go a lil' way to addressing that.
