May-16-02, 09:43 PM (EDT) 2. "RE: Paging Sniper!" Having studied the situation for a few minutes, it is my considered opinion that it beats the hell out of me. John's right, none of the six default routes has more than one td file (there's a tdl on some of them, which I'm guessing is a "low tile" file), and the only one I can find with more than one on my disk is the famous bodiddly/O&WV/ORRR/#12 route/whatever-he's-calling-it-these-days. Having developed a route that has four .td files, Rich has proven it can be done, but his motto is "I'd rather be lucky than good", and since he passed the buck on to me I doubt he has any idea how he did it either. I'm looking at the O&WV in the geo extractor right now, and it appears to all be contained in the same regional box, and the td_idx.dat only references the -00023+00027.td file, and none of the other three.Just to clarify a point, all the mountains on the PO&N were done with the "raise a track section up in the air and hit the Y key" method, I've never even tried a DEM extractor yet, so I don't know diddly-squat about DEM.As far as shifting it over, I have tried copying the text out of one \world .w file and pasting it into another in a different route to attempt moving all the placed scenery objects to a different region, but none of those experiments worked yet. I suspect there are some real world coordinates rather than relative coordinates in all that ViewDbSphere (
VDbId ( 0 )
Position ( 253.921 41.9346 584.411 ) stuff, but I haven't looked into what all those numbers mean.My suggestion would be to zip up one backup of what you have now, save it for a day when somebody figures all this out, and start over from scratch. I can take up to 10 megs in my email, so if you want you could send it to me and I'll play with it a while, but don't hold out much hope.

May-16-02, 11:12 PM (EDT) 4. "RE: Paging Sniper!" Really? I got four??? I didn't know that.... Never bothered to look.I think it's the regional thing too.Mike misunderstood what I said anyway. There was a post from way back where I remember you explaining what the various files were. I was telling him about the post and talking about the f.raw files. I know they're important but I don't recall exactly what they do. Anyway, I was telling Mike that somewhere you have a post that explains all this.Rich G. May-17-02, 00:09 AM (EDT) 5. "RE: Paging Sniper!" I read these posts with a big smile...youse guys are so close to a breakthrough, no I cannot tell you what I'm sorry. Just think about what you are trying to do with the copying of data files and how M$TS stores things on tiles. Now apply it to something else...all I can say is that it works, that knowing it can be done is 90% of the battle...now go figure it. Steps back and waits. ColzIron Fettle Rail

May-17-02, 00:17 AM (EDT) 6. "RE: Paging Sniper!" I went back and checked on TD files since I was experiencing similar or same problem. My route has two, but so does the USA2 route which is still the original install and has not been touched by any route editing.Since I did the "y key" thing on the tile that whited out on me. And manually rebuilt the hill on the north side of the tracks in that tile I've not had any more problem so far.I haven't tried creating new activities to see what that does.pennsyfan2 Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

I think that's the one you're talking about, Rich, but it don't cover UTM problems since I'm not even really sure what a UTM is, other than it has something to do with extracting a route overlapping a boundary. Nothing to do with f.raw, that's siding & platform markers, and possibly some other odds & ends. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

May-17-02, 04:54 AM (EDT) 8. "RE: Paging Sniper!" Interesting... that was the post btw... why I'm picking on the f.raw is because when I was creating my first install of this route, I left out the f.raw files by mistake. When the route came up, I went to the Besco area and the tile was missing except for the objects which plummeted down to the bottom of the abyss that was left. I've never seen this hole in the firmament as the one poster calls it but it sounds alot like that. What I'm also curious about is why my route would generate four of these different td files. My route isn't that big as far as expanse goes. What I'm thinking is maybe, just maybe this is happening every time I go back and add tiles. I've done that about four times now, though I think it maybe three.Now... here's my thinking on what maybe causing this problem but alot of it depends on my brain reaching back into the cobwebs here... but to cross a UTM boundary, I seem to recall when I did my pdf on routehelp, there was one that said something about opening up a second window in the RGE to get across that regional boundary, was there not? I was under the impression the RGE didn't normally allow crossing this boundary. It maybe that is where the problem comes from if that its how its done. I'm guessing the regional boundaries were done as some kind of indexing. If the problem is as simple as 'going from one database to another' then it would seem to me that someone could try dumping the contents from one database into the other, so there is no need to load up a second database which is where the speculation of the missing tiles are coming from. The thing that concerns me about this is then why the indexing to begin with. One I did do is to go into the TD folder and rename it. The route still came up but all the terrain was missing. The second thing I did was to rename the three oldest TD files with another extension to see what happened. The route came up fine so my guess is every time I went in and added tiles, it created a new TD file. The three TD files I renamed were dated back in December. The last TD file was only created a couple of days ago when I added a new tile to the route. Now this part doesn't make total sense because I would have thought there would be a date going back a month or so because that's when I added all the tiles to this project X thing I'm working on now. I plan on adding a slew of tiles here in the near future which should make for some interesting observation.Rich G. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

May-17-02, 11:36 AM (EDT) 10. "RE: Paging Sniper!" You guys are getting way ahead of me, but if I'm following at all then I've got a question. My PARails route currently resides within one UTM zone. so that should not be an issue. My td folder has two *.td files and the idx.dat file. They all have the same date, which makes sense since I made some significant changes on the entire route that day.
the *.dat file references both td files (-22 27, -22 28 )John cited (-23 27) for Rich's route Rich(route) is in WV(I think) I'm in South central PA. Is there any significance to these numbers being that close?Anyway, if these td files represent regions withn the utm(an MSTS thing) if I can manage to work in only one region and save the changes the date for that td file should change and the other stay at it's current date? If I fool around and keep watching this date change then I should be able to determine when I've crossed a regional boundary
right? Would that be information worth knowing for future reference in dealing with the problem at hand? One other thing coming to mind. Would text versus bin file format have anything to do with this?
