May-12-02, 06:20 PM (EDT) "Steel Viaduct Project" This is the results of an afternoon using PSP7 and TSModelerMessage Areas - "Steel Viaduct Project" – image 1 The Steel Viaduct project is an effort to put together a kit of parts that can be used by route builders to construct steel viaduct bridges of any length needed.
The kit is based on measurments and photos from HO kits and information sent to me by Joe Cooney who's been interested in using such a bridge.
I have set the kit up as several bridge sections of various heights, an end pier with berm, and seperate concrete pier for custom terrain placement.
Currently, the kit contains three heights of towers, from 25 to 75 feet, (8 meters to 24 meters) a seperate girder bridge, end pier and tower pier.
The texture for the girder is from a photo of an actual bridge.
The TSModeler parts file will be included when ready for upload.
I just need to add railing and safety platforms, Possibly some taller towers sizes if needed.Suggestions and ideas welcome.SRV Ron Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

May-12-02, 07:36 PM (EDT) 4. "RE: Steel Viaduct Project" Ron,Looks real great Ron.As I indicated in my private E-mail, these bridges are usually fabricated as "so many panels" in a tower. Please consider creating towers in 1, 2, 3, 4, & 5 panels of height. You can put the foundations on the pieces if desired, since it is customary to make the towers evenly spaced, vertically, from the top down, and then make up any terrain variations by adjusting the height of the foundations - which in our case, we just sink them more or less, into the terrain.J. May-12-02, 08:35 PM (EDT) 5. "RE: Steel Viaduct Project" Each bridge section contains a tower and one 60ft bridge connected to it. Piers are currently connected and about 25 ft deep to work in uneven terrain.
Each panel is 25ft in height. I will fabricate two more sizes.
If needed, I can hack out a silver texture on the existing sections.SRV Ron Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

May-12-02, 09:07 PM (EDT) 7. "RE: Steel Viaduct Project" Ron, You are The Bridge Master! I'm constantly in awe at your level of craftsmanship, and assortments of structures. Any chance for wooden trestles in "kit" form like this for route developers?Amazing,Thanks again,Tim Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

May-12-02, 11:11 PM (EDT) 11. "RE: Steel Viaduct Project" Answer to the questions above;
There is a wood tresle kit in the library. None for viaducts as far as I know. I don't plan on doing any at this time.
This is a single track kit although someone using TSModeler could stretch the width of the part sections to fit double track.
The base piers are now 35 ft deep to allow for uneven landscape.
There are now 5 sizes of heights to cover most needs.
If you need silver texture, you can reskin the included tga file and makeace it. (keep a backup of the original just in case you have a problem.)and,I just uploaded SRVBrdg5.zip. should be available in a few days.SRV Ron Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

May-14-02, 05:54 PM (EDT) 16. "RE: Steel Viaduct Project" Ron,You have outdone yourself again. Attached is the north end of the Catawba River Bridge as redone with your new items. The only thing that baffles me, is why you ran the tower columns up the sides of the girders. I have only seen a couple of bridges done that way, and that was because they had electric catenary on them. (VGN at Covell, WV, and some Milwaukee Road Bridges).I think what you may have seen is the gap between the girders, typically about 6" which at a distance looks like something going up the side of the girder. I am going to see what I can do with that, and the texture, so as to do it in "silver". I also need to look at doing a tower for the situation where there is a deck truss on one side, and girder on the other.Message Areas - "Steel Viaduct Project" – image 6(The bridge really looks much better than this, I was just trying to encompass as much of it as I could.)J. May-14-02, 07:29 PM (EDT) 17. "RE: Steel Viaduct Project" Looks good. The design is what I had to work with at the time. The nice thing with those using TSmodeler is they can modify the design of the parts to make those changes.
You can take the supplied .tga file in PSP7 and use the HSV color adjustment to change thr rusty texture to silver, then convert to .ace file. Of course, this assumes that you will use the entire kit in silver.
Looks like you need a custom support to go with the Pool Point span part of the viaduct. Now that there is a post of a span, I can use it to make modifications and work on a silver texture hack.SRV Ron Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

May-14-02, 08:21 PM (EDT) 18. "RE: Steel Viaduct Project" I plan to do the whole bridge in silver.I also contacted Rick Lamp, who did the deck truss, and asked him to adjust it for a 25' height, which is what all of the CC&O bridges are. However, having seen the way you did the towers on this structure, gives me ideas about how to do trusses of various types. I do need to seperate the plate girders from the towers for use on the Milwaukee Road (who had very rusty bridges toward the end). Most of theirs were 130' tall or more, one being 200', and all were on curves of 10 degrees, at least in part. The CC&O bridges of this type are all straight. When I get around to the L&N main stem, I will have to handle two routes through Nashville, one of which has a drawbridge, but the other has a massive viaduct, about 100' high with both deck, and through trusses over the Cumberland R. As a small boy, my dad sometimes took me to the park that was under this bridge to watch trains go overhead. Since it was wartime, it was impossible to get into this park (bridge was heavily guarded), but dad was in the Tennessee State Guard, so we could get in as "military personnel". Getting the plans for any CSX bridge is no problem - I have free access to all of the files, and still do some work for the Engr. Dept. on the side, through a temp. service.Best as I can figure, you used 30' & 60' plate girders on this structure, which is good. Most CC&O bridges were this way, a couple had 70' dpg spans between the towers.Jerry Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
