May-10-02, 09:00 AM (EDT) "Can't select my route in sim (warning: newbie)" I have created my first route but unable to drive a train on it, it's not showing up as a route selection in the train-sim program. I just want to use the 'explore route' option and drive an engine to try my route out. I'll do any activities later. It's a simple 2 rail line with some cross-over sections and has 2 stations, 1 at each end.
I thank you in advance for any help.Bill

May-10-02, 09:07 AM (EDT) 1. "RE: Can't select my route in sim (warning: newbie)" LAST EDITED ON May-10-02 AT 09:13 AM (EDT)You need to set up a basic activity. Make the path just 100' or long, don't take it through switches. This is all you need to explore the route. If in the run activity mode, you can go anywhere there's manual switches, automatic switches will lock.Keep it in an area that you're not going to change. Once you edit the area where the activity is, the activity has to be repaired. If you have to edit the area, delete the activity first. The easiest way to do that is to delete the contents of the ACTIVITIES, PATHS, and SERVICES folders, not the folders.Hank Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

May-10-02, 01:25 PM (EDT) 2. "RE: Can't select my route in sim (warning: newbie)" 1 open the activity editor
2 click on "file" in the top left corner, than click "new" 3 when the "select a route" box pops up, select your route from the pull down menu
4 select your route then click "ok"
5 the words "new activite" will appear in the window, erase them and just put in the letter "a" then click "ok"
6 a map of your route should show up on the screen, with black lines representing the tracks and black dots representing the places where the track ends, or where you have placed switches.
7 on the right hand side, next to "duration", click the up arrow to change the zero to a "1".
8 click on "edit activity discription", and just type an "a"
do the same with "edit activity brief", than just x out of them
9 just below that, next to "player service" click "new"
10 the "service editor box will pop up, with your cursor blinking in the name box. type an "a" in this box, than type an "a" in the display name box.
10 next you will see an empty window below "consist", click the drop down arrow and choose any cosist, it doesnt matter what.
11 click the "new" box below the "path" window, and a box will pop up that says "path name" type "a", than click "ok" type "a" in the "path display name" box that pops up next.
12 after you click ok, the path editor box will pop up. in the "starting location" window, and the "ending location" window, type "a". do not x this box out, leave it on the screen!
13 now on the map of your route, zoom in on the area that you want to start at ( right mouse button for zooming, and left mouse button for moving the map around). when you move you pointer over the exact spot onn the track that you want to start, a circle will appear. right click on the circle, and a menu will show up. click on "place start point".
14 after you do this, the travk will become highlighted in green. if it is highlighted in the direction you want to trravel, than right click a little further down from the start point, ( on the highlighted green), and select "place end point". if the green highlight is not going the direction you want to go, right click on the green and select "toggle start direction"
15 once that is done, click "leave path editor" it will ask you to save, click "ok" or "yes"
16 the "service editor" window reapear, just click "ok"
17 after that just x out of the whole thing.
18 you will get a message saying that "the activity has been changed. click "yes" to save these changes
19 a "save as" window will pop up, in the "file name" window, type"a"
20 if all goes well, a window will pop up, asking you to play
say yes
your route should now appear in the train sim route selection with the others. do "explor rouite" and for the consist just pick an engine by itself, ( i use the dash9 durable when i test).
P.S. if your route includes any switches, make sure there is a section of track placed at all three ends of the switch, train sim doesnt like it when a switch is the end of any line. even just using a 10m straight section will keep it happy.hope this helps

Thanks a lot for that, really helped.I read in online help that after saving my route it should be in the 'explore route' option, but it wasn't. That's why I asked here. Thanks for your help, both Elwood and signalmaster. These forum boards are so great and helpful. Bill Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

"RE: Can't select my route in sim (warning: newbie)" No prob, glad to help. as far as the "a" goes, you can type anything youwant, just make sure you use the same thing for every window. if you look in the "activities", "paths", and "services" folders, thats where you will see the activities you made. they will be labeled as A.act, A.pat, and A.srv . everytime you test you must erase these files and start over. and remember, TEST AFTER EVERY SWITCH YOU INSTALL!!

May-11-02, 09:34 AM (EDT) 5. "RE: Can't select my route in sim (warning: newbie)" As others have said, you need an activity. Jim "Sniper" Ward's tutorials are very useful on many aspects of route construction. Several have been saved on the web. You'll find them at http://www.railpage.org.au/steam4me/trainsim/tutorials. May-11-02, 01:13 PM (EDT) 6. "RE: Can't select my route in sim (warning: newbie)" More specifically, you don't really need to have created an activity as long as you have created a path and saved it. Once you've done that you needn't save the activity itself. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
