May-06-02, 04:30 PM (EDT) 1. "RE: Powder River Basin" Actually, UP runs from Caballo mine south and BNSF runs from Caballo mine north. I'm not sure if there is any track that is used by both as UP hadn't finished their tracks last time I was there. I know an engineer for BNSF that works the Caballo to Gillette run and he says that it is the most boring piece of track in the world. (His opinion.) They average about 12 mph on any given trip. Between the speed of the train and the fact that much of the terrain is featureless grasslands, I don't wonder that they get bored to tears. I used to get bored traveling from Douglas to Gillette at 90+ per in a rented Ford Thunderbird. Dan Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

May-13-02, 10:43 AM (EDT) 3. "RE: Powder River Basin" John,Please elaborate on the 95% figure. My railroad maps show the BNSF as running south from near Gillette, WY. (BNSF calls it Donkey Creek Jct.) to Caballo Jct. which is where the Caballo mine is located. It then shows the UP/BNSF shared track as running south from there to near Douglas (Orin Jct. specifically). If you are referring to the 'rather featureless terrain', then I guess that will be one of those differences of opinion that make horse races. Although I cannot prove that any of my other statements are true, neither can you prove them false.;-p Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

May-15-02, 09:45 PM (EDT) 5. "RE: Powder River Basin" BNSF maintains and dispatches the Orin subdivision, so the UP doesn't have any track to start building, let alone finish (other than a staging yard at Bill). The UP and BNSF do jointly operate trains on a portion of the subdivision which is why it is called a 'joint' line. The westernmost access UP has is at Caballo Jct eastward to Shawnee Jct where the UP splits off onto the former CNW line to South Morrell. BNSF operates on the entire subdivision.'Average' speed is a rather general term and varys greatly depending on type of train (loaded or empty) as well as whether you are considering operating speeds only or including dwell times at control points, crew changes, etc. 12 mph would be a high speed estimate for loads on the grade between Belle Ayr Jct and Whitetail, but otherwise traffic often operates at the timetable speed of 35 mph on the 15 miles between Donkey Creek Jct. And Caballo Jct.-JohnCS
