May-04-02, 08:13 AM (EDT) 4. "RE: Do you think there is going to be a" But without backwards compatibility, it will probably be no sale to me. I'm several dozen hours into building my favorite train-watching prototype route, and if it doesn't work in version 2, I likely won't buy it.By the way, the "yes" answer is probably based mostly on the documented fact that KUJU has posted help-wanted ads for people to work on version 2. Well Lets all Just hope that it WILL be 100% Compatible with the Current Version "So all of our work with the First Version" Doesn't wind up in the trash!Bob
Philadelphia, Paoh and to HHP/Amtrak12/ or Just Plain old Steve Mason.... i seriously hope you do not get your hands on the New Version if and when it is Released "Trust me you Don't need it" but what you can use is a Padded Cell.... i think Holmesburg Prison here in Philadelphia has a few on Lease "Since it is now Closed" i think if your Willing to pay they will take oh and it is also Right next to the Northeast Corridor so you can always See the Trains as they go by Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

May-09-02, 09:35 PM (EDT) 12. "RE: Do you think there is going to be a" I have every version of FS since version 5.1. Although aircraft created for FS5 were not usable directly in FS-98, which I currently used (and had FS-95 before that or whatever they called it), MS did provide a translator which allowed you to translate aircraft to the current version. While scenery was changed in later version, legacy scenery was still usable up to FS-98. I have not fell for FS-2002 yet, but it tempts me, especially the PRO. version. Although my professional career was on the railroad, (as an Electrical Engineer), and I did get to run trains during strikes many years ago, I also acquired a Private Pilots ticket along the way, and still enjoy FS.I say all this, to suggest, that in a MSTS-V2, current scenery and/or equipment might not be directly compatible - gosh, I would hope they would improve it, this OLE stuff is pretty unstable really, - it is likely that some translator will be provided. MS & Gates didn't get where they were by forcing users to stay at the same level forever. No, each time, they made it highly desirable to get the next version of whatever widget it was you were using.J. H. May-10-02, 01:16 AM (EDT) 13. "RE: Do you think there is going to be a" LAST EDITED ON May-10-02 AT 01:18 AM (EDT)Sorry to be a party pooper , but I personally think that version 1 will be incompatible. If Microsoft put their brains to work they would see that having a folder with all the 3d models used in every route. Then the game would use a list of 3d objects by which it would add it to the gameworld. This way it saves a HELL OF A LOT of space. soemthign like 1.5 GB at least. My point is that all shapes and objects= 1 folder, several routes using same objects..... no problemo. Also I would think that they would make the RE MUCH MUCH MUCH easier to work with . Now that they have seen the trash and garbage they have left us with. I am hoping it will be something like the Trainz route editor, definetely the better route editor out of the 2. Not that I support TRAINZ. I like msts and it is very good. There are just these small drawbacks that dis-appoint me. I have been wanting to make a route for a very long time. It's just that I don't have the patience for such a wasteful program. To all you RE ENGINEERS I have a lot of admiration for you. P.S. I also hate certain idiotic newbs. There are the new kind, then the dumb kind like hhp/acela12/aem7 *sigh* the world we live in. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

May-10-02, 08:07 AM (EDT) 14. "RE: Do you think there is going to be a" I dont think that Microsoft will make the mistake of putting there name on a program that will not use the Trains and files from the previous version as FS98 fs2000 planes work in Both FS2002 and CFS2 and now they are bringing out CFS3 and you will be able to import all your favorite planes from both. Our Squadron Commander in the VMF323 stated it is a sad thing that the Train sim trains cant be imported to CFS2 for Target Pratice.
(he dont like a sim unless you can shoot at something)

May-10-02, 05:43 PM (EDT) 16. "RE: Do you think there is going to be a" Now that I think about it you are probably right. All I can think of someone having to do is move the files or use a little easy program for microsoft. Like a converter. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

May-10-02, 08:11 PM (EDT) 17. "RE: Do you think there is going to be a" Very probably yes .This is an item I posted today on this site
"I just noticed a little article in the business section of the Sunday Times saying that Kuju is preparing a stockmarket float that could value the company at £15 million.
Having recruited new programmers and with cash available (soon!!!) it would seem that a msts2 could be a much more realistic proposition.
Tha article mentions that "their titles include the highly popular Train Simulator"
Georges from London"
The big question is "when ?"

May-10-02, 08:34 PM (EDT) 18. "RE: Do you think there is going to be a" Lead time on a program as complex as MSTS is at least a year, and FS comes out with a new version every two years. MSTS first appeared around 4/2001, so I predict spring of 2003.I would hope that marketing doesn't push it out the door too quick this time - that was, I believe the main problem with V.1.Had the programmers taken the time they probably said they needed to iron out the bugs, it would have been better. However, I would like to see them come up with something other than OLE to handle the linking of the multitude of objects that are used. OLE works fine for inserting a pix here or there in a word file, for example, but when you consider that a 120 mile route, will have several layers of interconnected objects, i.e. dbase layers, it is not surprising that it corrupts easily. For example, we suggest laying all of the track first. Then it gets a little hazy, but first I put in all of the tunnels and bridges. Then I put in the roads. One thing that bugs me, is that when you KNOW you will need a crossing, the program won't let you put it in until you have a road close enough, but there is no definition of close enough. HOwever, there is a 2 track level crossing, with or without gates which I go ahead and put in as a place holder in double track, but it does not allow the linking of a road piece to it. As I put in tunnels (now 56 of them in 277 miles) I "fix" the holes and plant some trees as camouflage. I found out that the tree groups are best if the ground is either level, or evenly sloped cause then a BUNCH of trees only uses as many links as a single tree. Signals - well, I "is a afraid of dem things"-----.JHS Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
