May-02-02, 03:02 AM (EDT) "Moffat Road goes through Byers Canyon" The Moffat Road has now made its way through the tough stretch of Byers Canyon. While only a bit more than two miles long, it is narrow and rocky, and forced the railroad to use the sharpest curves on the line, up to 16 degrees!Sorry about the unauthentic motive power and consist. I guess the BNSF was desperate to get these hoppers west today. Here is the rear of the train just west of Hot Sulpher Springs, entering the canyon:
Here we see the head of the train, just after it has rounded the 16-degree curve:
A telephoto shot, rounding a 10-degree curve:
Approaching MP 88:
Heading out of the canyon:
Rounding the long 10-degree curve leaving Byers Canyon:
Right now I have about 21 miles of track completed between Sulpher and Gore. Many more to go before I get to Dotsero and Craig. I am working west right now and will stop and Tabernash, so that's not too far, and now that Byers Canyon is done, the rest will be a breeze. Let me know what you all think. Love this forum, and thanks to all of the folks who have answered my questions either directly or indirectly.Mark Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

The canyon between Radium and Kremmling took my breath away. Are BNSF trains sometimes seen here? I noticed on their website that they have some trackage rights on a line going west out of Denver. Apparently UP uses some BNSF track in Minnesota and Washington state.Batt Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

May-03-02, 11:38 PM (EDT) 5. "RE: Moffat Road goes through Byers Canyon" YES, BNSF has trackage rights on the old D&RGW lines as a result of the UP-SP merger. BNSF has crew change points at Denver, Kremmling, Grand Junction, and Provo.
I shot this train today (May 3rd) in Fruita, CO.
Its a BNSF coal train that runs from a mine just west of Wellington, UT to Missouri (I believe). I haven't seen this train in months. Hopefully it will be a regular. It had very interesting DPU's close to the rear.
So Mark isn't too crazy for using BNSF engines although Rio Grande would be better. Nick

May-02-02, 07:00 AM (EDT) 2. "RE: Moffat Road goes through Byers Canyon" VERY immpressive terrain work! There's always a lot of attention paid to the climb up the Front Range, but Tabernash to Dotsero, and especially Gore and Byers canyons, are just as spectacular. May-02-02, 11:28 AM (EDT) 3. "RE: Moffat Road goes through Byers Canyon" I meant to say that I am working EAST, not west, right now, hence the destination of Tabernash, which is definitely EAST of where I am now. I will start going west from MP 107 (east end of Gore Canyon) once I reach Tabernash. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

May-03-02, 04:48 PM (EDT) 4. "RE: Moffat Road goes through Byers Canyon" Hey MarkNot sure how I missed this post earlier. Your route looks great!! I can visualize the actual place when I see your screen shots. At your last pic, there is a talking detector that actually warns the trains if they are going too fast. I was following the Amtrak train through there and heard it go off. I hope no one in the train had a scanner. If I was a passenger I'd be worried. Keep up the great work. You are really making good time on the track work.Nick
