"RE: new to MSTS" lol Kev...Yes and Lots of it And a little advance warning if your using a Slower Machine (Low End) Expect to see Many errors, and if you Advance into Actual Route building BACK UP TO ANOTHER LOCATION as often as you can, the reason for Backups are simple if the Editors should Eat your Work (Yes they do become hungry once in a while and Eat your work) by backing up you'll have a Recent working Version of your work that you can Restore.hope this helpsand you should get many more Response to this thread so check this often and Others of this wonderful Forum will have more Advice for you as well as tips to help you along the way But Either way Good luck Bob

Apr-30-02, 10:50 PM (EDT) 3. "RE: new to MSTS" I am very biased about this topic, and point you to the Guide listed below! It costs US$15.For more neutral opinions, just scan recent threads on this forum: you will see that several other people have asked the same question.Michael Vone

May-01-02, 06:33 AM (EDT) 4. "RE: new to MSTS" Second Michael's post, self-serving though it appears to be...I had no clue what I was doing until I bought this. Just wish a hard copy mail option was available so I had the whole thing in front of me, instead of printing a few pages at a time as I need to look at a topic. May-01-02, 10:42 PM (EDT) 5. "RE: new to MSTS" I gave up and printed the whole thing. Having the manual in a binder sitting on the desk makes cross-checking items easy. I don't have to keep going back to a screen to read or put my laptop next to it and make room for everything on the desk. I have a few guides printed, but as Michael pointed out his is the best thing going. There are some good pointers in the forum and I print the ones that have good ideas, for example the recent ones on tree alignment and scenery placement. As anything can happen, backup, backup, backup (hint). All of us have had a route file get damaged and needing to restore a backup. Best of luck on your projects.Richard

May-02-02, 10:56 AM (EDT) 7. "RE: new to MSTS" Whatever you do, start small, then go from there. I did a couple of small routes, using Micheal Vone's guide, and now I am an working on a route with about 70 miles of trackage.I also "disect" other routes to get tips and ideas as well.Be prepared to spend alot of time working on it. Not only are you looking to lay tracks, but then you will need to add scenery, etc. On more than one occasion my wife has gotten up at 1am and found me working on the route, oblivious to the time (or the fact that I have to be to work the next day.) Its fun and enjoyable as well as frustrating and aggravating. And be sure to backup, backup and backup again. I backup my files on daily basis. ATSFDUDE

May-02-02, 09:26 PM (EDT) 9. "RE: new to MSTS" I would also recommend subscribing to a 12-step program for this activity as it may help one get to work on time. LOLOne advantage to being retired is not having to worry about the next morning. If you do not already have one, I would further recommend that you invest in a CD Writer of your choice (I like HP, but there are many good ones and now most of them are $100 or less). Then get a bulk package of CDs and one of those binders like people put music CDs in. Everytime you work in the program, back up the Tile and World Directories, as well as any of the <route name>.* files that have changed their date. Every two or three days, burn a ROM of the whole route, date it, and set it aside. In doing 277 miles spread over two routes, I have burned about 30 ROMS so far, not counting the 3 or 4 I burned of the finished north end to send to friends. In bulk, ROMS are less than $.20 each today - I can remember when they were $15. each. For my Blue Ridge Sub. project, the daily backups average around 200M, and the full backup is now at 650M. It is not actually necessary to backup the textures and shapes directory since most of these come out of the box, so to speak, and presumably you will have kept the zip files of anything you downloaded from this site, or elsewhere. Then a bucket of Prozac will probably help, but I prefer a good meal at Bob Evans, after which I usually get sleepy.J. May-03-02, 12:29 PM (EDT) 10. "RE: new to MSTS" LAST EDITED ON May-03-02 AT 12:36 PM (EDT)I seem to remember reading somewhere on the forum that when you write to a cd, the file attributes change. I copied the richmond route from my home PC and brought to work to show someone and the files runs fine. But when I make any changes, it gives me an error about the files being read-only only and asked if I wish to make them read/write. I select OK and everything is OK Anyone got any insight on this or is it just me.ATSFDUDE Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

May-03-02, 12:47 PM (EDT) 11. "RE: new to MSTS" That is everybody. Since CD/Rs are read-only devices, anytime a file is copied out to one, it is automatically assigned "read-only" attributes.Whenever you copy a route directly from a CD to a PC, in which there is no automatic loading involved (like there is when you load a Microsoft game of any type), it is necessary to go into Explorer, or whatever you use to manipulate files, and set the attributes to R/W and also uncheck the archive box, otherwise, the program will probably run, but you won't be able to save or alter anything.J.
