Apr-11-02, 07:50 AM (EST) ""Track Objects" Forest Size Number Test" Message Areas - ""Track Objects" Forest Size Number Test" – image 1I've now got a pretty good handle on what the numbers do! All, in properties, number of trees, set at 5000 (this seems to max the density). Starting at the right (I know this is backwards) the first set is stock, 1st Forest ( "Fir_01" "US2autofir1.ace" 12.0f 22.0f 0.9f 1.1f)Next, I changed just the first # and got same height, thinner trees2nd, Forest ( "Fir_01" "US2autofir1.ace" 6.0f 22.0f 0.9f 1.1f)Reset 1st # and changed 2nd, this gives the same width as stock, but 1/2 height3rd, Forest ( "Fir_01" "US2autofir1.ace" 12.0f 12.0f 0.3f 3.0f)Reset #'s 1&2 changed 3rd, Now about 1/2 the trees are smaller and somewhat random in size (looks like the further this and the next # are from 1.0, the more random the size change towards large or small is.Forest ( "Fir_01" "US2autofir1.ace" 12.0f 22.0f 0.3f 1.1)Now, only the last # is changed, and I get 1/2 of the trees random bigger.4th, Forest ( "Fir_01" "US2autofir1.ace" 6.0f 22.0f 0.9f 2.0f)Trying it out. going for generally skinnier trees than stock, with small and large mix, big variety. Only the 2nd # stays the same. Forest ( "Fir_01" "US2autofir1.ace" 6.0f 22.0f 0.3f 3.0)Message Areas - ""Track Objects" Forest Size Number Test" – image 2 So;
1st number is width of tree
2nd # height of tree
3rd # affects half of trees and will make them smaller or larger, the further from 1.0 the # gets, the bigger or smaller they will be and the more variety of sizes.
4th # same as 3rd, other half of trees.Steve Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Does anyone know how to get the forests out of the track objects box ??You can create a separate "Forest" category by creating a class for them and putting them in the ref file, but I haven't figured out how to remove them from the Track Objects box.oboe Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Apr-11-02, 09:48 AM (EST) 2. "RE: "Track Objects" Forest Size Number Test" Just thought I would try and clarify an already great post. The third and fourth numbers are scaling values. Changing these numbers will affect all trees randomly. The third number is the minumum scale factor and the fourth is the maximum scale factor. These scaling values produce a forest with much less uniformity and therefore look much more realistic in the sim.Setting the third number to 0.5 and the fourth to 2.0 will result in a forest full of trees ranging from half the original size, given by the first two numbers, to double the original size. If you look in the world tile files at the forest objects you will find that these values are listed as scaling factors. One other piece of interesting info is that once you place the forest object, all the information about that object is recorded in the world file and reference to the forest.dat file is not made for that object again. Changes to the forest.dat file therefore do not show up for already placed forest objects. To see these changes you must delete the object and place a new one. Resizing the forest object does not update these parameters either.Happy planting!

That one screen shot with five different forest.dat settings is really helpful. I have printed it out for reference. Plus, I never realized you could have different size trees in one forest object. That is great to know.Bill Burnett Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

There I was, changing the numbers and placing the forest region and looking at how it affected the size of the single object that first appears. I assume the value of the first two numbers is meters, so theoretically you could change the height to 50 and get a 150 foot tree. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
