Apr-11-02, 03:51 AM (EDT) "Chicago Elevated Railways Route" Here's what I got when I uninstalled/re-installed MSTS to give myself a default installation then tried installing L2.
Unzipped ALL the files and folders to the routes directory. Followed the instructions within the install.bat file. (Which I ran from the ROUTES directory.)
Opened Train-Simulator. Did not see L2. Closed Train-Simulator.
Ran runL2.bat (left window open).
Opened Train Simulator, and ran L2. Got the error about the missing files. Pressed "YES" ... drove through the State Street Subway!
Closed Train-Simulator.
Typed Exit in the open runL2.bat window.
Opened Train-Simulator, played NEC.
Has anyone else, other than my beta testers gotten this to work?-Chris

I installed the route as the readme says, and it worked from the first time. After i copy the missing files from Japan 1, i do not get any more errors. I have fixed the activitys, so i now have three ai-trains meeting me in them.The route is great, but short!

Apr-11-02, 07:20 PM (EDT) 3. "RE: Chicago Elevated Railways Route" Chris,
I've followed your instructions to the letter. When I run the "runl2.bat" file however, The sim won't load, just the infamous S/DS message. I've tried it three times with the same result. Is there any other way this thing can be loaded. BTW, I can open it in the RE, do something, close RE, then "exit" the bat file, but it still doesn't show up. Apr-11-02, 09:35 PM (EDT) 4. "RE: Chicago Elevated Railways Route" You must do the same thing in the sim. Open the runL2.bat, play the sim. Close the sim. Type EXIT in the bat file, then close the bat file.-Chris

Apr-11-02, 11:18 PM (EDT) 5. "RE: Chicago Elevated Railways Route" I've traced the send/don't send on loading to a conflict with one of my downloaded routes, I don't know which one yet. I cut all except L2 and the six default KUJU routes out of the \routes folder, and after loading, I selected the L2 route. It locked up while loading the route, and after hitting esc I was able to ALT-TAB back to the desktop, and the error message about the missing ace files was hiding behind the little beggar. So after answering yes, continue, to 3 missing textures (from JP1, I think), it loaded. I started explore route with the 2000 series at Roosevelt, and after going thru the loop stations into the tunnel under the river it locked up solid and I had to re-boot.I followed Okrasa's threads on the Xtracks problems pretty close, I suspect the lockup in the loading screen is a conflict between the global L2 tsection.dat file and one of the downloaded routes that uses a lot of dynamic track. (This ridiculous program reads all the tsection.dat files in all of the installed routes and compares them with the current \Global tsection.dat while loading, instead of waiting to see which route you're going to select!) That would explain why some people are having trouble with it and others aren't, it depends on which add-on routes they have installed. Once I get it running stable, I'll start pasting the other routes back in to the \routes folder and see if I can chase down which one it is. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Apr-12-02, 00:39 AM (EDT) 6. "RE: Chicago Elevated Railways Route" That makes a whole lot of since. I knew how MSTS worked in relation to dynamic track, and things of that sort, (I guess you have to when trying to make new track sections) but I had never put two and two together to think that would have been causing the lockup.... I may do a bit of research myself.-Chris

"RE: Chicago Elevated Railways Route" LAST EDITED ON Apr-12-02 AT 03:14 AM (EST)Hey ChrisI have not been able to get your Chicago Ele to work or even show up in the route/activity window. I installed the route to the route folder, ran the install bat from the route folder, the install bat installed the files, then ran the run bat and left it open, minimized it, opened train sim and did not find L2 listed. Installed the L2 twice and ran the run bat numerous times with the same result. I am familiar with installing add on routes, as I have 9 currently in the route folder with the default routes.Any ideas?ThanksChuck

Apr-12-02, 11:32 AM (EDT) 9. "RE: Chicago Elevated Railways Route" LAST EDITED ON Apr-12-02 AT 11:46 AM (EST)I got it, Chris, it's the Hoboken Shore 5. I was using this utility;
http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/DCForumID6/4210.html
Which changes the tsection.dat in \Global back to the original, and changes the tsection.dat in USA_HBS to a little 2k tsection.dat from a test route, here's the entire contents of that:SIMISA@@@@@@@@@@JINX0T0t______TrackSections ( 12
TrackSection (
SectionCurve ( 0 ) 2000 2 0
)
TrackSection (
SectionCurve ( 1 ) 2002 -0.08 135
)
TrackSection (
SectionCurve ( 1 ) 2003 0.08 135
)
TrackSection (
SectionCurve ( 0 ) 2004 5.88 0
)
TrackSection (
SectionCurve ( 1 ) 2006 -0.085 135
)
TrackSection (
SectionCurve ( 1 ) 2007 0.085 135
)
TrackSection (
SectionCurve ( 0 ) 2008 7.32002 0
)
TrackSection (
SectionCurve ( 0 ) 2010 2 0
)
)
SectionIdx ( 2
TrackPath ( 2000 3 2000 2002 2010 )
TrackPath ( 2001 3 2004 2006 2008 )
)That's a grand total of 2 pieces of dynamic track. The utility works, XT_On.bat enables Hoboken by copying the original hobo5 tsection.dat into place, and copying the Xtracks tsection.dat in \global. XT_Off.bat copies this little tsection.dat file into place in USA_HBS and restores the original tsection.dat in \global.
The original problem was conflict between tsection.dat files, if you have the Xtracks tsection.dat in \Global, you get derailments and uncouplings on dynamic track sections on every route not based on Xtracks, with the original tsection.dat in \Global the sim locks up on loading when it encounters the tsection.dat in USA_HBS. Okrasa's solution is to run a utility called Horace on all the routes not based on Xtracks (including the six defaults) to convert them to Xtracks compatibility, but I didn't like that idea at all. So I came up with this hack, which was clumsy, but it works.
The problem here is something other than a tsection.dat conflict, since running XT_Off.bat changes the tsection.dat in Hoboken to a normal one, and the loading screen lockup with L2 occurs regardless of which tsection.dat file in USA_HBS is active.
Temporary solution, click on USA_HBS, click on cut, and paste into a backup folder. Then after running L2 cut and paste USA_HBS back in, and you have to restore the Xtracks tsection.dat files before running it.
I haven't tried Teemu's solution, there's an alternate install for hoboken that doesn't use Xtracks, probably we need to adopt your method somehow if it's possible with Xtracks routes. We got Maglev tracks coming up eventually, so we gotta come up with some kind of solution.
What's really wierd here is the difference between your custom tracks and the hoboken with Xtracks, the exit subroutine in runL2.bat merely restores the original \Global tsection.dat file and doesn't make any changes to the tsection.dat in the L2 route itself. That doesn't work with Hoboken, the loading screen locks up when it encounters the difference between the original \Global tsection.dat and the Xtracks based one in the USA_HBS folder.
Almost forgot, anybody else reading this can confirm;
1. You get the lockup loading L2, you have Hoboken Shore installed,
2. You don't get the lockup with L2, you have a bunch of other routes, but not Hoboken Shore.
Here's my list;
Six default routes
austria (unfinished test route)
Bodiddly RR
E Metro RR
Fhsr
flatlands
Heinlein (unfinished Sci-Fi route)
pobla
port_ogden (the original)
portogden4

portogden6 (unfinished next version)
portogdenV31
RtCntrl-route (HITW Route Control)
SeaView
SodorRific (yet another unfinished route)
TimeSaver (Ron's beta)
Unterland
YorkshireL2 works with all those installed, but not USA_HBS. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

"RE: Chicago Elevated Railways Route" LAST EDITED ON Apr-12-02 AT 12:19 PM (EST)Hey ChrisI figured the name in the routes window would be Chicago Elevated so I looked for that name, then looked for L2 and then looked for any other variations of the name and found nothing listed. I see from Snipers list that L2 won't work with USA2_HBS which I have installed in the route folder, however I am not getting any lock ups or error messages. It's just not showing in the route list window.Chuck Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Apr-12-02, 12:39 PM (EDT) 11. "RE: Chicago Elevated Railways Route" That makes sense sniper. Though, the reason the variance in the tsection.dat in L2 won't affect the sim is b/c the route's tsection.dat contains only path information, and dynamic track. The shape info is in the world files. I used 800 numbers for my initial sections, though that can be easily changed, and I am working with Okrasa and a couple others on exactly what, and how to run these extra shapes, and where to place them. Also, I'm postponing a fix for the missing japan textures for the time being. Until some more of this gets worked out. Meanwhile I've started on the Dearborn Subway, and extended the State Street Subway to Clark/Division. I've recently incured some setbacks with my custom objects, in the fact the raw TSM files were lost in an MSTS accident, and I can find no backup. So I've been working a LOT in the unicode files lately and feel very comfortable working in them, and have come up with some ideas for the future.Chuck-The only way I can think of that happening is if you didn't install the initial route properly. It must not be in the main routes directory, or a base file must be missing, that would be the only solution for the sim not to see the route.-Chris

Apr-12-02, 01:02 PM (EDT) 12. "RE: Chicago Elevated Railways Route" Hey Update to my above thread. I stuft the USA2_hbs route into a folder and now the Chicago Elevated now shows up in the routes/activity window. I selected the the route, terrain buffers loaded and I got 3 error messages for missing texture files, I cliccked yes on all error messages and the Chicago Elevated loaded up and runs.Thanks Sniper for the suggestion of stuffing the USA2_HBS into a folder. This worked even though I wasn't getting any lock ups, it just wasn't showing up in the route/activity window.I quess we learn something new everyday.Chuck Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Apr-12-02, 04:45 PM (EDT) 13. "RE: Chicago Elevated Railways Route" Wierd, Chuck. You never know what this silly sim is gonna do next.Tower case, 350 watt power supply

Motherboard: ASUS A7A-266
Processor: AMD Palimino XP1600+
Memory: 768MB PC-2100 DDR RAM
Video: NVIDIA GeForce 4 Ti-4400 128MB AGP
Hard disk: WD Caviar Ultra ATA-100 7200rpm 40 gig hd
Sound: Creative SB 512 PCI
OS: Windows 98 Second Edition
Modem: Speedstream 5260 Ethernet 300 DSL
ISP: SBC AmeritechThat's what I got, and with the 768 megs of DDR RAM I thought I'd seen the end of lockups. On your system for some reason the conflict with the Hoboken route just caused L2 to not load, on mine it caused a lockup. The difference could be in the hardware, the OS, or the way you installed hoboken. Just for giggles, could you try using that XT_Off.bat in hoboken, replacing hoboken's tsection.dat with that little 2k one, and see if you get the same effect? I think it's actually another file in hobo5 causing the problem, not the tsection.dat, since I get the same problem with L2 even with a normal tsection.dat in USA_HBS.
As far as you go, Chris, I wouldn't worry about it overmuch, this is actually either an Xtracks problem or a hoboken shore problem, not an L2 problem. I racked my brain for months to find a solution to Xtracks conflicts, and that XT_On/XT_Off was the best I could come up with. Your method is brilliant, and if it can be made to work with Xtracks and the Maglev sections, plus whatever other wierd narrow gauge and bridge sections we see in the future, I think you oughtta collect royalties on it. (Not from me, of course, me stealing ideas from you has become an MSTS tradition, so we don't wanna mess with that!) The only bug you have in there that I see so far is the missing JP textures. I haven't ridden the subway in a few years, but I remember the tunnels in between the stations being darker than that, might want to think about a darker gamma for that.Message Areas - "Chicago Elevated Railways Route" – image 1
Original atracktunwall.ace.Message Areas - "Chicago Elevated Railways Route" – image 2
"Extra Spooky" version, Gamma reduced to .70 in PSP-7.Aside from that, the tunnel between Lake St. and Grand Av. that goes underneath the river has just the right slope to it, as soon as I saw it I knew where I was without reading the station signs (I always took the front seat next to the motorman's cab on the subway so I could look out that front window, not much to see out the sides!).BTW, all youse guys who are CTA fans but not from Chi-town, it's pronounced "shih-KAW-go", not "shih-KAH-go"! I am originally from Chicago and I am living in Fredericksburg VA now. I do pronounce it shi-KAH-go. It gets a little funny because I get that accent going and every now and then a southern drawl gets in there. That is funny to hear and it happens most when I get excited. I have to stop myself and calm down. And no, I am not from MEL-rose paRK either.

Wierd huh. Also the Chicago Elevated does run on my 'puter without running the runl2.bat and if I run the runl2.bat and leave it running, the other routes do load with the runl2.bat still activated.The Chicago Elevated subway is interesting, but I was hoping for some out door elevated operation in this route.Here is a pic of running the Alco S4 in the tube with grain cars on the tail end.ChuckMessage Areas - "Chicago Elevated Railways Route" – image 3 Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Apr-13-02, 08:26 AM (EDT) 14. "RE: Chicago Elevated Railways Route" Hey there Chris,
I was able to get the L2 to run with no problems. Did have the missing shapes and after copying the texture files from Japan1 they were gone. I am not sure if this was just a test or not but when I got I think the end of the tunnel, the train derailed. I have almost all the routes installed except for Hoboken Shore and there were no problems switching back and forth. I am also running XP Home and I do not have any problems with running the RunL2.bat file. Just click on it and go.
Thanks for your effort and I do look forward to the route when debugged as it gives me a taste of home and what I miss.

Apr-15-02, 08:52 PM (EDT) 19. "RE: Chicago Elevated Railways Route" Brad, that question should be taken out and shot. Could you clarify a little? If what you're asking, how do you get the route, you have to click on the File Library link at the bottom of the page and go to the Routes section of the file library, find L2 and download it. After that, you unzip the file and read the directions. If you already HAVE downloaded and unzipped it, and you're having trouble understanding the directions, you'll have to spell out what it is you don't understand. That way somebody won't be telling you to run the install.bat when you already did that, and you're stuck on something else. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Even when everyone speaks the same language, communication can be a beast if you start with the assumption that the other guy already knows something that you learned 20 years ago. While researching Dynamic tracks problems, found this post.
Had previously downloaded L2 and installed it per directions.
Like Chuck, it just never showed up so I could run it.
Uninstalled and reinstalled about 5 times.
Glad I read this post, and the part about HBS5 causing weird problems. Going to back up HBS5, remove it from my Routes folder, and try Ls one more time.
