I ran the bitmaps thru the MakeAce converter using the wrong compression.. Since this was the first time i have done this i didnt think there
was a problem till Sniper pointed it out to me ...the larger .ace files worked on my 3 systems so i thought they were ok .. the textures work there just kinda big size wise....patm41

Apr-02-02, 02:01 AM (EST) 1. "RE: Error in uploaded textures" Got your email, 80 in Texas? Can I come down and live with you? It's still snowing up here. Are you guys still a part of Mexico? I never did get that straight. Not a big problem, use that tutorial to shrink them smaller, send an email to Nels asking him to take the first set off when you upload the second set. I can't even count how many times he un-screwed my screw-ups, and he don't mind at all. That was the primary reason I posted that tutorial in the first place, Bill sent me a beta of Seaview before he uploaded it, and I found I could get most of enocell's buildings down to about a third of the zip size. Terrain textures are pretty easy to make into very small ace files, since they don't have tranparencies to them and they stretch over a large area. The only difficulty is getting them to "tile" without showing seams or patterns when you place a lot of them together, for that you have to try to use something like the clone brush to make all the edges the same color. Then you end up with what looks like a quilt pattern, so you have to smooth and blend and soften and run angled textures thru it to break up the squares. Too much like work, but I'm currently looking at OErotgenscrub ace files to get the trick of making stuff that looks good with seamless edges. I still ain't happy with my textures, and some guys prefer the PO&N4 textures to the new ones in PO&N5. Stealing textures out of one of MS flightsim games is a good start, this one:
came right out of combat flightsim 1, and at 256x256 compresses to only 43 kb, and still looks good. Your coppery rock texture:
looks like a good candidate for the Rio Grande Southern division, either to replace sand.ace or in addition to it. One way to trick this out would be to paste both files to the same image, then use the clone brush on the edges to make transition textures between the two. That's the tedious part, making all the different transition textures, I cheated on the RGS division by using tunnels so I didn't need more than one sand texture. Before I even get into that tho, I'm currently looking at what Rich did with using only default textures for the O&WV, and he picked a helluva good mix. Using a combination of default and custom terrtex files would be a good way to enhance the scenery and keep the zip size down to a reasonable download.
