Mar-28-02, 08:48 AM (EST) "Tunnels" Is there an easier way to fill in the area around the tunnel portal? I know that you may not hae to lay terrain around the sides of the tunnels, cause you can't see there anyway. But around the portals. Also, the terrain thing with the embankment and cutting and all that, whats that all about, and how does it work. I know what the width is for, but other than that, I'm pretty my in the dark.Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.Loose Cannon 17 Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Mar-29-02, 00:57 AM (EST) 2. "RE: Tunnels" As far as the terrain tool goes, It's pretty scetchy, depending on the direction you're going. It likes east-west or north-south, any thing inbetween gets weird. I myself am used to a different way of exspressing slopes, (that is I say 1:1, they say 45 degrees,). That is 1:1 being 1 foot of rise over: 1 foot of run, (vert. vs. horiz.). So... bearing that in mind, prototype practice is generally, on fills, (rock or earthen) a slope of 1 1/2:1 is almost universally accepted, (if you were to dump your wheelbarrow load of rock haphazardly on the ground, the slope of your pile would be very near, if not at a slope of 1 1/2: 1, sometimes also referred to as the "angle of repose". This is is just the value nature seems to have imposed and we don't often mess with it. (If it ain't broke, don't fix it!). Of course the rub comes in on the cuts. The best bet is to know the geology of your route. If you're in soft material, hold to the 1 1/2: 1 value, otherwise a good rule of thumb would be, semi-solid (e.g. sandstone or decomposing granite) 1:1 (45 deg.)anything harder,( solid granite, basalt, etc...) you could go up to vertical cut, (90 deg.) although, MSTS does not yet support this. (Maybe later?).Regards
Jeff

Apr-02-02, 10:34 AM (EST) 3. "RE: Tunnels" Thanks, I'll probably try the desert scenery boulders that I have downloaded for now until I figure out this rise over run stuff. Finally, the math classes that I hated sitting in because I never figured that I would need what they taught me are paying off. Thanks againLoose Cannon 17 Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
