Mar-25-02, 10:47 AM (EST) "Recovering a Corrupted Route" LAST EDITED ON Mar-25-02 AT 11:14 AM (EST)Is there really a way? Yes, I violated the cardinal rules and added signals, spawners, crossings. But it seems I now can't go back and remove these items, even with backups. The first sign of trouble was a wye turnout.Message Areas - "Recovering a Corrupted Route" – image 1In the RE, trying to select the piece in the red box locks the program. Doesn't happen with the pieces around it. When it happened the first time, I managed to find a backup where I could remove all the track in that section and put it back down. Well, the problem came back. This little piece of world took some time and planning and what's bring it down shouldn't be bringing it down! With regard to the siganls et al, I manually removed some and let rebuilding the DB remove some others. back and forth until they were all gone as well as all the other interactive objects. But now the wye piece problem. Any help would be appreciated. Unfortunately, all the work I've seen discussed here, in spite of the much appreciated hard work to draft solutions, are bug work arounds. All of which should have been fixed before MSTS saw the light of day, or at the very most, within 6 months. And that's being generous.Start venting>> There is no way this program was ready for primetime with all the bugs. Add to that nearly a year later, not a major revision in sight. That piddling little patch, what the hell did that do?? IM not so HO, the problems in this version are so onerous, you can be almost assured we'll have to trash just about everything we've added, if (and that's a big if) a repaired release comes along. That pompous jackass that runs MS should be thrown in jail for fraud and the key lost. Had anyone else put forth such a non-robust product, they would have been out of business.Even as freeware, this version would have been no bargain. And most assuredly would have deleted it.That said, I'm ready for the competition(har, har). Who's tried what, forget the glorified CAD layout design types.HankPS Are the one's who foisted this travisty on us even reading these comments? You certainly can't get to them any other way. Mar-25-02, 01:42 PM (EST) 1. "RE: Recovering a Corrupted Route" I had similar problems, and one is still there. Luckily the faulty tile is not in the middle of the route but it prevents me to make the NEC complete. First time I got the problem fixed by deleting the faulty tile and regenerating it. Just delete *everything* from it(if you can), then delete the tile in RGE and regenerate it. After that rebuild track database(if that works, I use tdb rebuild just as an check function), or maybe right after deleting the tile before regenerating it.I have tried/used lots of beta programs, but none of them have been this buggy... Even MS' Visual C++ is not very stable, and I think programming application must be stable and protected from crashes (no wonder if the TS crashes often if it is programmed with M$ program). I used C++ in Win2k which also should be stable, but even power switch didn't work when C++ crashed...Enocell Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Mar-25-02, 03:58 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Recovering a Corrupted Route" Signalmaster,First of all, let me thank you for your wonderful work with the signals available on Train Sim. They are easy to use, look great, and make my route look like something around where I live in Canada.Second, I have lost my route not once, not twice, but three times. Microsoft (take me to court for it) it nothing but a capitalistic, unrelentless monster that must have everything before everybody, regardless the cost. Lets market a screwed product so everyone can buy it before the competition gets theirs out, and by then it will be too late for the honest man to complain or demand money back, because we didn't even send a set of usable instructions with it. So here we are, trying to figure out something that needs a 50 page manual just to create an activity.Instead of just useless venting (it does feel good, and I can highly recommend it to anyone), lets take this little bit of angst against a giant, and cut him down at the knees. Yes Microsoft ripped us off by marketing a product well before its completion. Like buying a car with no brakes. The problem here is that we are the guniea pigs Microsoft needed, and we are serving the part. Unfortunately, we don't like it, but I can only assume that the workers who built the actual railroad didn't like that much either. If you think of it that way, you can oversee the problems that Micorsoft keeps dealing us. You shouldn't have to be an experienced computer literate freak to build a route. What is needed, is the how to on how this game actually works, because if you make the slightest, and I mean slightest error, forget it. You lose everything.Keep this in mind, I will HIGHLY NOT RECOMMEND this game to anyone who wants to buy it, and I highly recommend everyone else doing that. DON'T buy the second edition when it comes out, cause by then, you'll have figured the first one out. I am going to sit back, using the Train-Sim.com message forum, and watch others expriences with ANYTHING Microsoft puts out. Till then, Gates look out, cause by the time I figure out this crap you made me pay $100CDN for, I'll probably be able to launch a nuke. If one has to hack a file to make his engine go faster, that's cool, or to provide better physics. I bought the game not to run on BNSF rails, but my own. I didn't buy the game to spend half the time it takes to build the route, just rebuilding what you lost the last time because of something that down't make sense to the average human brain. The only reason I pick up the pieces is because of the community that supports this site, and many others. If Nels Anderson reads this, thank you for providing this website. It is actually the best thing since sliced bread.Testin the frayed ends of sanity and now looking for Mr. Gates and his band of outlaws.Loose Cannon 17 Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Mar-26-02, 08:12 AM (EST) 3. "RE: Recovering a Corrupted Route" seems to me that lots of people enjoy this sim and have no problem with it..If you just want a route and your personal objects i think you should learn to program and build your own software from scratch...

Mar-26-02, 09:18 AM (EST) 4. "RE: Recovering a Corrupted Route" Far be it from me to defend Microsoft. My days are spent either waiting for MS software to do what it's supposed to do, or figuring out ways to get around their "features". Take this as simply an explanation as to why things as they are.1. Software inherently has bugs. There's a saying in the software business that it takes 50% of the cost to get a product 95% done, 50% to get it 98% done, and you can simply never get it 100%. Take my word for it, that's so true. It is slightly surprising that there has not been a major patch for this product; I suspect that KUJU was not working on it because they did not have a contract with MS, and MS did not work on it because it's just not their product really. The fact that this thing runs trains, looks fairly cool, I mean look at the things people have added on to the sim. So in balance I think it's worth investing my time in.2. MS isn't evil, though I really like to say they are. It's a business, a corporation, in the U.S.A. Their primary purpose is to make money for their stockholders. They do it very well. The fact is they put out this product, people buy it, and MS makes money. That's the bottom line. Making a quality product is not their #1 priority, making money is.p.s don't tell anyone I said that.

Mar-26-02, 11:56 AM (EST) 5. "RE: Recovering a Corrupted Route" Just want everyone to know, I am not a worthless whining post. I do appreciate this sim, and everything that has come of it. For everyone that hates it, there is one who loves it. I guess it just varies on how in depth you get into doing things with this sim. I find this simulator to be a very viable and cost effective method of enjoying model railroading, without the space required for a full size HO layout. (Could you imagine scaling 173 miles of Marias Pass in your basement.) What my issue here is, is that even though everything made by man is bound to fail, a simple set of instructions would have made me see past the errors and defeciencies in the game. I notice who is having the problems, and based on the number of posts in this community, their experience level with the sim. Everyone is going to have the same problems, regardless of how careful they are. And that is the problem. I just hope that someone in this community is related to Microsoft, so that at least our voices are heard. When the second edition comes out, and hopefully they put customer satisfaction ahead of their shareholders this time, please at least be compatible with what we already have. I have worked too long for almost nothing to lose it to capitalism. Enjoy everything here, this is just great, and is almost a childhood dream come true.
