Mar-21-02, 04:47 PM (EST) "Marker Files" Well I have all the terrain layed out for my route and am ready to start laying some track. If I'm right, I'll need to set up some marker files to help me put my track down accuretely. What are the best programs for this??? I've seen several in the file library. Is there anything I need to know before I start???
Thanks in advance, Jae Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

"RE: Marker Files" MSTS need its marker files in a particular format and with accurate latitude and longitude values as coordinates. To prepare these, therefore, you need to have a map which shows the features you wish to mark and a means of aligning it with an absolute latitude and longitude position (registration as the process is known)I suggest you try TSTF (at this site - search for tstf*). But as I wrote it, I would say that, wouldn't I Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Mar-22-02, 08:11 AM (EST) 2. "RE: Marker Files" Hi,
for me the program MakeMarker 4.0, which you can obtain at train-sim.com, works marvelous. You need a gif image with your map and two exact geographical coordinates on it. I am using the program with 100m DEM and so far the offset was nowhere larger than 50m (compared to the real life location of the route).
Cheers!

Mar-22-02, 11:48 AM (EST) 3. "RE: Marker Files" Can markers be used for other purposes than laying track. For instance, can markers be use to accurately position a riverbed, roads, or other objects who exact position is known. In other words, are markers in MSTS similar to survey markers used to map out land?Cal Rasmussen

I haven't used TSTF so I can't compare them.
If you use the GPS waypoint function in MicroDem, you can create marker files for any feature you desire. Road crossings, bridges, rivers, building placement.I like 24K DLG"s for track markersUse Dems for terrain features. I like to set the map parameters to grayscale(reflectance). I think it shows the terrain features more clearly.IMHOUsing DRG topos will let you plot at least x,y coordinates for buildings, roads, track, Any feature that's on the topo, that you want to include in your route can be plotted and a marker created for it. Hope this gives you some ideas.pennsyfan2 Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
