Mar-20-02, 09:49 PM (EST) "Progress Report - Clinchfield RR, Phase 2" To the board of directors, kibitzers, kluge makers et.al. et.ux.After suitable rest and relaxation, aided by several kegs of the local product, your locating engineer struck out through the trackless wilds of East Tennessee, and Western North Carolina, hoping that he might be able to use some of the abandoned grade of the Charleston, Cinncinnati & Chicago, RR (3-C) which went belly up a while back. However, their construction standards just did not cut it. It was discovered that once an initial sharpt climb from the bridge at Unaka Springs, to the 1st Toe R. Crossing was accomplished, the rest of the way to the crest of the Blue Ridge would almost be a water level grade. The Grade was maintained at a steady .125 (MSTS units) and frequent checks were made to be sure that the track level was at least 7 meters above normal water level in the Toe R. (For the westerners in this group, the Toe Rises in Avery Cty. NC and flows generally northwestward to the TN border, where for reasons lost to history, it suddenly becomes the Nolichucky R. Same water though.Track has been constructed in rough fashion, some slides have occurred which need to be stabilized (i.e. sculpted), but the railhead is currently at MP. Z-157 and an elevation of 638 meters above sea level. The locating engineer remembered a nearby crop-duster, who had a Wright Flyer, and hiring same, he managed to get two pictures to show to the assembled throng. The first shows the Nolichucky Crossing, i.e. future site of it, at Unaka Springs, TN., looking generally southeast.Message Areas - "Progress Report - Clinchfield RR, Phase 2" – image 1The second, and last for this report, shows the 1st Toe R. Crossing at Popular, NC, looking generally east. The red hicky in the upper right marks the north end of the Popular Siding.Message Areas - "Progress Report - Clinchfield RR, Phase 2" – image 2Respectfully,J. H. Sullivan, P.E. Bless you for making a Tennessee/Virginia Route. I am from Knoxville (halfway between Coster Shops and John Sevier Yards.) I think this will be something write home about. If you need a beta tester, let me know.

Mar-21-02, 02:02 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Progress Report - Clinchfield RR, Phase 2" You might contact Clayton Notgrass and get a copy of the already "released" Kingsport Sub. from him. I just limit the production to a few colleagues. These routes take up too much disk space to be practical for an upload on a 56K modem, otherwise, I would put them on the group. You can look up Clayton in the threads to my messages. The Kingsport Sub. covers the line from Elkhorn City to Erwin, and if you trace the landnrailroader name in the group, you will find a number of progress reports on that line. I am not so good at scenery, so it is in a semi-finished state, and is not signalled because of the difficulty of doing signals in MSTS. We all hope for two things. 1 - a better, more reliable editor, and 2 - a means of compressing the data and excluding the common items with out-of-the box routes. I am planning to get a copy of "Train Control" as soon as I know what my contribution to the IRS (and the accountant) will be this year.I am retired from CSX, but spent a lot of time in Knoxville when I worked for the Southern, 1965-78.J. Mar-23-02, 09:50 AM (EST) 3. "RE: Progress Report - Clinchfield RR, Phase 2" Its good to see the Clinchfield back under construction. Can't wait to see Thermal City and Bostic, which is about 5 minutes from my house to either location. If I can assist any way with pics, etc, let me know.Chuck Watson Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
