Mar-14-02, 01:22 AM (EST) "TSection.dat Clearinghouse" LAST EDITED ON Mar-14-02 AT 01:27 AM (EST)If I were to establish a clearinghouse for assigning \global\tsection.dat - and I am inclined to do so as a service to the community - which of two options would seem to make more sense to the group?1. Start with the xtracks tsection.dat file and just increase the number of section allocated.or2. Start with the xtracks tsection.dat file, push all the new track sections up to numbers above 1000, and also increase the number of sections allocated. The simple act of increasing the number of sections allocated will result in the need to re-Horace any routes that would use the revised tsection.dat file. What I have read, some of which has been private e-mails, suggests to me that the 2000 entries that Okrasa allocated in the xtracks file will likely soon be exceeded. The point I see in leaving a hole between 263 and 1000 is so that in the very likely event that MS/Kuju ignore this effort, there is less likelyhood that they would wreak havoc with developments between now and then.Feed back welcome. If I don't convince myself otherwise between now and then, I hope to post a sample of what I would offer to the community by the end of the weekend. It looks like there are some great things to come that will need entries in the \global\tsection.dat file, and I for one would hate to have to be swapping out incompatable files just to be able to use different routes.David Beach Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Mar-14-02, 03:24 AM (EST) 1. "RE: TSection.dat Clearinghouse" David,I have a Tsection.DAT file that I have altered and I have my bridges and Okrasa's Xtracks installed on my machine....so if
you want to use my Tsection.DAT then your welcome to it.I hae 9 items in the 3995-4003 range and started placing my other work at 6000-?, I could adjust it all if needed...Also I have the DAT file number reserved at 20000.It has continuous numbering up to 4003 then a 6000 listing that is just by itself at the top of the number stacks. This doesn't seem to make any difference....if you want to see the file just to have a gander at it...let me know how to send it to ya...my e-mail is controll@speakeasy.net
LaterRick.P.S. - I can take which ever system you decide.Rick Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Mar-14-02, 03:27 AM (EST) 2. "RE: TSection.dat Clearinghouse" One Other issue to look into is that it is most likely that KUJU/MS has on occasion looked at this forum...even in passing and may have seen the request to create a DAT file for each route...if so this may kill our file when the newer release's hit the market later next year. Or they may try to work around our endeavors and help out...I believe the first option is probably the most viable from their standpoint.Rick Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Mar-14-02, 06:54 AM (EST) 3. "RE: TSection.dat Clearinghouse" David:As I mentioned in another thread, I'd like to propose that the pool of numbers to be allocated be BIG. Don't forget that besides all the stuff that people are putting together in train-sim.com, there's people in the UK, Germany, Holland, and probably a few other places more which are interested in sharing what they've put together with others. If the "new" tsection.dat can be made as "globalized" as possible, it would save a lot of users a quite a bit of trouble. I myself, though I come from Argentina, are running both US and UK routes on my 'puter and would really like to keep on doing it.Let me know if you want me to give you a hand with anything such as liasing between forums or whatever you may need. I'm active on CroTrainz and UKTrainSim as well as this forum. Many thanks and Happy Railroading to all! Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Mar-14-02, 07:57 AM (EST) 4. "RE: TSection.dat Clearinghouse" David,I have my file at 20000 but it could just as easily be 100000
it seems so if you want to get on with the work of making this
file a reality...lets get Okrasa, you me and anyone else who has something to be compatible right now and get on it....Again if we get the number usage from each person who wants to include something into the file, then we can send them a copy, let them add their stuff in the area designated and make their routes compatible, then do it for the next person...we may have to pass the file around 5-6 times before all are in in the US...then more times for foreign objects....I promote the idea of a really BIG number, cause then we could have 1-10000 be US and 10001-20000 be UK and so on till all are accounted for ( that would at least give us a 10 region start for it ) and then were off and running.Has there been much talk of this on the other sites? We could also just do a regional DAT file that is for US, UK, AUS and so forth...it might make keeping up on changes easier, though the headaches for the keeper of the files would be probably as bad either way, and we could reduce the number back to the 20000 I have now, that should be sufficient for all of one country to use.The Globally included lines could be below 10000. That would include Okrasa and me and other non-regional specific objects.I am willing to help....though as with all sim's I have been interested in and seen over the years...people come and go in them and some die out...it may be hard to find a group willing to follow this for too many years.Well, let me know what you think of all the ideas (the idea man) I came up with and I'll talk to ya later.Rick Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Mar-15-02, 11:59 AM (EST) 6. "RE: TSection.dat Clearinghouse" I don't know if you have realized this (I've kind of taken it for granted) but keeping a master tsection.dat is not enough. There needs to be a package with tsection.dat and ALL the shapes and textures or it will not be usable. It would be impossible for the average user trying to locate all the released track sections that are included if they are not provided in a complete package.
If I remember correctly the sim will not be too happy if any shape is missing regardless if you use it or not.
Another note, I’ve had reports from users on a matter regarding XTracks and lighting/shadows that might make you all have second thoughts on anything other than tracks as track sections. I’ll document the problem (and solution as done by KUJU) over the weekend with pictures and post it next week.

Mar-15-02, 03:36 PM (EST) 7. "RE: TSection.dat Clearinghouse" Okrasa,I'm going to have to try test it and see if I can use a tsection.dat file that lists all of your xtrack shapes and sections with out installing all of the shapes. At times I question my sanity for trying to take on the tsection.dat file, I know it would be insanity to try to keep track of all of the associated files also. I certainly wouldn't take on that task by myself.Chris,If a revised tsection.dat file that I have asked Okrasa to test for me works right (and if there is any point in doing this at all, see above) I would renumber your sections into the 1800s, just adding a 1 in front of the number in use. This is in no way an attempt to be difficult, but rather to leave open a window for MS/KUJU to totally ignore what the community might do and still not foul things up too badly. The file that Okrasa is testing has all of his section numbers increased by 1000 also. One session with Horace should convert (a copy of) your route from using the 800 series to using the 1800 series.David Beach Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
