Mar-01-02, 08:16 AM (EST) 1. "RE: Mountains from Mole Hills????" Hey, those are some beautiful mountains you have there Question, did you use DEM data to build the terrain or did you try building it yourself? If you used DEM data it may be that your data is off in a certain area. It may be an error in the DEM data. Just a thought. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

LAST EDITED ON Mar-01-02 AT 09:59 AM (EST)Yes it was DEM data from GIS DataDepot, tried downloading them again and got the same thing, but to me it looks like if it is errors, its errors allover the place between 4 different files. this is literely be virtually flat with some rolling hills and gentle grades. but after flying over the whole area that was terrained, this looks more like the Black hills then of Iowa.
Heres what I had after Micordem processing

Mar-01-02, 10:09 AM (EST) 3. "RE: Mountains from Mole Hills????" Make sure you know what scale (meters or feet) the data is provided in. I've found it can be in either. The old converter let you choose 10's or 100's of feet or meters. Sometimes I guessed and it was still wrong. Run it until it looks right. Not too scientific, but it worked for the one route I extracted.

Mar-01-02, 11:22 AM (EST) 4. "RE: Mountains from Mole Hills????" Mike; This is caused by using the wrong measurement scale, i.e. you have data in decimeters and you say it is feet. Go to tile selection mode, click on the tile to out line it in red and then right click it and choose set tile height. Look at the value, it's in meters and compare it to what it should be. For me in Illinois, most places are 600 to 700 feet or 181 to 212 meters. This will give you a clue to the value you need. Just so you know, I usually guess what it is and use DEMEX and then go look at the results. If its wrong I choose another value and do it. Heck there are only 4 options so at worst I have to do this four times.David Klemm

Mar-01-02, 12:48 PM (EST) 5. "RE: Mountains from Mole Hills????" Don't don't don't use XYZ data files with DEMEX unless there is a good reason for it (which in your case there isn't). You have selected the wrong height scale.Use the original STDS files, or save it from Microdem in MD DEM format.
