Feb-15-02, 01:36 PM (EST) "Sniper, how did you make the extractor for your PO&N route?" Sniper or anyone else who can help. I want to make a self extracting executable file to allow a quick and easy installation of my route when I upoload it. Like the one for the PO&N version 5 route. Only problem is I don't have a clue how to do it. Can someone please tell me how you do this so I don't have to upload it as a zip and have you copy all the shapes and textures from all the routes by hand? Please tell me how to make the executable so I can distribute my NEC extension more easily. Thanks. Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

LAST EDITED ON Feb-15-02 AT 02:17 PM (EST)Actually, I couldn't tell you how to make a self extracting executable, cuz I don't know how either. I went to www.winzip.com and bought their self extractor maker 2.2 for winzip, and used that. There's a screen when you're putting it together to enter a command line for it to execute when it's done unzipping, and I just enter the name of the batch file in that. Took a while, I read the instructions over and over while I was making self extractors with it that wouldn't launch the batch file, and I finally figured out (I think) what the problem was, in the batch file itself.
There's a few ways to go about this, depending on what you did to the NEC. Using Ezstuff for a template, delete all the lines except the ones for USA1, that will copy only USA1 objects into it. If your extension is an add-on to the NEC and not a complete route, that won't be necessary unless you used objects from routes other than USA1 in the add-on tiles. If you used textures and objects other than the ones from USA1, those would need to be copied into the route anyway, regardless of whether it's a complete stand-alone cloned route, or you're replacing the tdb, rdb, tit, rit, and tsection.dat files from the root, plus adding or replacing \tiles, \TD, and \world files. Simplest way is the old way, put a batch file in it and tell them in the readme to find and click on the batch file. The self extractor is nice tho, speeds things up and you can make a shortcut to it to re-install the route after your 12-year old hacks it to pieces. You want to go that way,
www.winzip.com , cost you money.
www.zdnet.com , bunch of freeware and shareware exe makers in the editors and tools downloads, free but hard to learn (for me, anyway).
The big thing is to test it and see if it actually works by deleting the route (you DO have backup copies?) and running the batch install and see if the route works after that. I D/Led and ran PO&N5 to test it, and the first thing I noticed was that I forgot to take out the line to copy all the europe2 \terrtex files, the finished install size is 298mb instead of 320mb without those. So don't feel bad if you screw up the first one, this is my 6th upload and I'm still screw\*.*\ing up. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
